Where it says "System update ready", that is where the FW version is normally displayed.
My assumption is, this text string replaces the FW version text string, until the update has been performed.
If so, that is poor coding.
Eeehh? How is that poor coding? If anything it is a poor UX / design choice.

Disable Wifi and restart the console (full shutdown) and then check the version. You get that message because the system is checking for updates in the background, which is what it has found, so it replaces that version text string.

Ideally, you will want Airplane mode or Wifi disabled afterwards.

It doesn't matter for the most people they get a info that there's a new fw and they will update they just don't care about the fw version

I have the same issue. I think its becuase of the update nag (every time I go to play a game it asks me to update the system, software, or play the game.)

I think using an alternative DNS to remove the nag (or some type of tether device with the Switch.) Will stop it, but I haven't tested it out.

Just like the 3DS, It downloads the update and prompts you to update (if you leave the console on sleep mode.)

Turn it completely off, then hold VOL + and - at the sametime when you powerup it. Then you will enter recovery mode. There it say.

There is a page in the settings that displays troubleshooting info, and one of the things displayed is system version (or at least, I think it is, it displays 2.0)
That was the only place I found that would display my current version.

How is "Oh my UX designer told me to put the "You should update" message where the firmware version normally is, let's do that" poor coding?
For a software engineer your statement is a bit frustrating
So, how do you know the designer is the one that made the decision? Maybe it was the software engineer that decided to replace the FW version text, in useable memory!? For a designer, YOUR statement is a bit frustrating.

It clears user data and installed games.
