Looks like The Adventures of Cookie and Cream which is a great game for the PS2 (Yes! In English!). On the PS2, you basically controlled one character with one side of the controller and another character with the other side of the controller. It made for some really cool co-op since both of you had to use the same controller.
actually.. looking at the bottom corner of the box.. one person on buttons and one on touchscreen seems pretty bogus.

yeah .. i have the game for ps2, it`s a lot fun to play in coop mode, but just play on your own is really really hard!
the ps2 version is really cheap on ebay! i bought mine for about 3-4 euros including p&p. go get it!

I've just lost a good half hour to this game.
Its a lot of fun, you use the D-Pad to control a bunny on the top screen, and every now and then you find a button that you step on which launches a minigame on the bottom screen (to open the path on the top screen).
It reminds me of Warioware with a timed platforming element. I'm up to the boss of the second world (Music world). If anyone has worked out how to beat it, please let me know. The hint is useless, and all I can do is bash the bars with my hammer(s).
So far I only found one place where I had to use the face buttons and stylus at once. Had to hold down A to jump and hang onto something, then rub the touch screen up and down. A little awkward, but nothing putting the DS on the table doesnt fix.

did you tried the game on wifi? i wonder how that works.

Haha, I'm not Japanese. I just live here.
I know so very little Japanese. I can say hello, count to ten, and recognise the characters for where I live, and where I have to go every day. Thats about all.
So yeah, its playable. I have no idea what all the menu items are, but there seems to be a lot of wifi icons in the menu. At a guess I'd say that you can do co-op over local wifi at the very least. Havnt explored it because as I said, no Japanese knowledge
Edit: Just tried your suggestion. The hint has no sounds, just indicates the stylus movements to use (pretty obvious). I tried hitting the same bars that the "boss" hits, but that seems to have no effect.

i don`t know then. hopefully i can play finally in the upcoming days. i`ll try the game for sure, i will tell you how to kill the boss if i can figure out

Yeah, I'll try to get one of my friends to wifi it tomorrow at work. See how that plays.
Its perfectly playable by yourself though. Kind of hectic at times, but fun. As I said, in two worlds there was only one problem area, and another area where you needed to control both at once (but the face button controlling was just holding "up", easy)
Edit: Totally no idea what to do at the music boss, so I've gone onto the next world, a desert world. Much more coordination needed here. Often needing the microphone, stylus and face buttons. Luckily I discovered that the shoulder buttons work the same as the action button, which means you can use L to jump and hang onto things, and the stylus in your right hand (Or vice versa). Hope that helps anyone else trying to work out this game.
Edit2: Ok, turns out I just deleted my save by playing round in the other menu options. Man, I'm awesome. Anyway, got stuck in the desert world, maybe third level where the minigame was just a scene with sand, and the hint was to go horizontally over the sand with the stylus, but nothing seems to work. If anyone works it out (same with the music boss), please let me know.

Just found a nifty minigame area aswell. It seems after each level you get points based on how well you did, and once you accumulate enough it unlocks a new minigame. Each minigame has three levels, and the two I've done both involve getting a ball to a goal.
After doing the minigame a piece of a puzzle is revealed. No idea what purpose it serves, but its nice to know theres something else to this game
