I'm not sure if this has been asked before, but it doesn't recognise the custom themes. I mean, their real names and previews are not shown.
For example, it appears as a theme called "Winx Club Mythix" but when I select it my Snoop Dogg theme pops up. It is not a really big issue, but I'm curious about why this happens. Both icon and name are ok when I check them in my computer.
Again, sorry if this has been already asked or answered.
By the way, thanks for this dope tool!

1) Open eShop or delete theme title via devmenu or FBI
2) Open the "change theme" menu to clear its cache
3) Reinstall theme package and enjoy

Sorry for not writing in a lot of time... I was focused in SOON!2 and I lost track of this thread for some reason.
Anyway, I am back here to help all of you.
I guess this will be a lot of copypasting the same solution almost everytime (use DevMenu, delete the old package, does not works with gw)(really, I said that all over this thread, also it is a big link in the OP on wht to do if you have troubles, I gonna think most people does not read), but anyway, here I go.

when i install another theme pack or something from eshop i lose the installed themes, its normal?. Other .cias (games, homebrew) work fine. Curiously three themes stay installed (always the same)
emuNAND 10.4-10.5 reiNAND 3.1-3.2b NEW3DS XL 9.2 sysNAND
It is normal. The theme pack will be overwrited if you install a new one or (partially) deleted if you visit the eShop.

Okay, why the heck does this tool need admin rights AND creates various "autorun.exe" files when starting up? I've monitored this thing, those actions make me very suspicious...
EpicLPer said:
So I found out this tool actually writes directly to the C: root folder, not a "portable" one... Why?
This is the container software behavior:
1-The container (.exe) extracts all the programs data (and the program itself) to "C:\Users\-your username-\AppData\Local\Temp\ir_ext_temp_#", then it runs "C:\Users\-your username-\AppData\Local\Temp\ir_ext_temp_#\autorun.exe" (Howling Theme Tool) and keeps in sleep mode.
AutoPlay
Cursores
DLL
Packages
autorun.exe
HowlingThemeTool.ico
lua5.1.dll
lua51.dll
2-Once you close Howling Theme Tool, the container deletes all the temporary contents in "C:\Users\-your username-\AppData\Local\Temp\ir_ext_temp_#" and closes.
This is the AMS style. Howling Theme Tool was created with AMS8. Just google it, you will see that's not strange.

Why it's run as admin?
Well, if I want to have control over the Windows API using LUA I will need to use Admin privileges in WinVista,7,8,10. I do not even understand why Microsoft included the "Run as Admin" mode. I was happy in WinXP with everything running as high as it can.

Wanna more proofs?:
Go to "C:\Users\-your user-\AppData\Local\Temp\ir_ext_temp_#\Autoplay" with Howling Theme Tool open. AMS always load the code from "C:\Users\-your user-\AppData\Local\Temp\ir_ext_temp_#\AutoPlay\autorun.cdd". It is a zip file containing "_detect.dat", "_fonts.dat" and "_proj.dat". The last one it's the source code. You will need to bruteforce it, because the zip it's password protected (I do not even know the password for that file, that's automatically generated and embeded in the executable when compiling). I think there are some apps around there that do the bruteforcing for you automatically. LUA it's a script language, so it is like a batch file. It's true that you can obfuscate the code, but I did not did it.

Trust me, it is 100% safe.

After adding a bunch of themes, this tool has started to act really strange and I can't figure out why. I have a total of 47 themes now (this includes the Monster Hunter and Final Fantasy ones that came with the program), and now every time I try to pack the themes, the first 20 or so display as completely unrelated official themes (such as Abstract Black-Red from 3DSThem.es showing as the official "Amy Rose Theme"). They still work fine, but they display completely incorrectly now in the Change Theme Menu.

To fix this, I tried making a completely new theme folder and just moving the abstract ones in there, then told Howling Theme Tool to use that folder so it'd just create a .cia of the abstract themes I wanted to use (which is only 7 or so). For some odd reason, the program bundled themes that weren't even in the theme folder I pointed to, but rather my old one.

As a last resort, I tried moving my theme folder out of it's current directory, and deleted everything related to Howling Theme Tool save for the original zip. I re-extracted it and tried the huge theme folder again, but it still doesn't work and keeps showing a good majority of my themes as "official" ones.

Trying to recover my old cia before I added these new ones, but does anybody have any idea why the tool is suddenly starting to act finicky even when I create a relatively small collection of themes?
Before install a new package in your HOME Menu you should delete the old one (it's always the one under "Browser for ##" in BigBlueMenu/DevMenu).
You must place official themes inside the "Oficiales" folder and custom themes inside "Custom", NSFW themes in "Custom NSFW".

When i finished playing, i shut down my 3ds so i could charge it, now when i try to enter my CFW by pressing L+power (Menuhax) it doesn't work, apparently this kills menuhax...
hallowersv said:
I installed menuhax again and booted into my CFW, there was no themes setted up, but the themes i installed with the CIA pack were still there in the theme selector, idk what's happening lol

So what the real flaw here is: everytime i change theme in my emunand, this kills menuhax.
You must UNLINK your NANDS. It will even happen with eShop official themes. To use custom themes in EmuNAND (installed as .CIA) and keep using MenuHax in SYSNAND you must have your NANDS unlinked.

Hi there, recently my themes have been behaving strange. The first time I installed them, they work flawlessly, but the second time I tried (adding some new custom themes) in the theme menu appeared the same quantity of themes I installed in the first time. I chose one, and it happened to be one of the new ones I had installed, and from that moment, no matter how many themes I install, the menu just shows the same as the first time even if they are new ones.
Any idea? I tried installing them with BigBlueMenu and some new themes appeared, but they looks like official ones, and I don't have any.
Sorry for my bad english, I hope everything is understandable.

Before installing a new package, you should delete the preivous one (it's always the one under "Browser for ##" in BigBlueMenu/DevMenu).
I also recommend you to choose two simple themes (red and blue) as shuffle to clear the theme's extdata cache before installing the new package.

Eddypikachu said:
Oops wait the custom themes are showing up now, they werent showing because I named the text files "name.txt" instead of just "name" lol
You should have your extensions hidden in Windows' Explorer.
I will recommend you to run the "Theme Checker" included in the package, it will create the files for you.

I just had a weird bug happening to me.
I compiled two themes (an Undertale Battle Menu theme from 3dsthem.es and one of my own themes, a Gumball theme (also available on the site)), compiled them into one .CIA, and when I installed it, one of them (presumably the Gumball theme) changed into the Dual Destinies: Mood Matrix theme. Here's the list of weird things:
-It had the icon and everything.
-Upon setting it as the HOME Menu theme, it was the Undertale theme.
-I've never had the Mood Matrix theme to begin with.
-The contents of the Gumball theme are right, and they are neither the Mood Matrix or the Undertale theme. Even the title and icon are custom.
-The theme is not an edited Mood Matrix theme.
I don't know WTF happened, but I'm thinking on making a separate Themes folder on my microSD and compiling them into separate CIAs.
Coffee Prosecutor said:
So... I kinda got a little problem:
I had it working before no problem, I even was able to add another batch of .cia-themes after I installed the first pack.
Now I tried it a third time, but now, almost all of my themes except the ones I installed the second time are gone, also, the new ones didn't install as well.
I tried deleting the second pack of themes: No luck, they reappeared after a reboot. O_O

While typing, I managed to find a solution: Go into Settings -> Data Management -> Nintendo 3DS -> Add-on Content -> Delete "theme"-file, go back and reinstall your themes.
I know you both found the solution, but anyway:
Before install a new package in your HOME Menu you should delete the old one (it's always the one under "Browser for ##" in BigBlueMenu/DevMenu).
Then it will work flawless.

I've read about a way to pack a custom theme CIA that has the correct signature, so it won't be deleted by the eShop, but I can't find it anywhere. Does anyone know about that?
You should look up for @redunka 's signature in "that iso site". There is a direct link to a tutorial about it.
Anyway, you will only able to pack Official themes (properly signed by Nintendo) with that method.
Nothing about custom ones.

Would it possible for you to make some "ultra theme shuffler" app for this? The current theme shuffler has a limit on how many you can add to shuffle, which kind of sucks when you make a big pack.
This is out of my hands, you should yell at Nintendo about it as it is a Home Menu's specific issue.

I have a little problem, and probably it is really really silly.. but how can I make a BGM.ogg file? what software should I use?
Out of a Wav file?
use "Format Factory" (it's free)
Out of bgm.bcstm?
Use YATA+ to extract the WAV file, then read above.

anyone use mac and winebottler know how to config winebottler so bmp2icon.exe can work normally?

i don't want to use VM last time i use it, it make my mac hang

another thing @Chelsea_Fantasy do you want to make program for mac too ?
you need to use a VM
no mac ports plans for now.
yell at Indigo Rose, maybe that company will think about letting AMS compiling apps for mac too...
I coded Howling Theme Tool using AMS as IDE and LUA as script language. AMS only let's me export as Windows' executable files.

this is much better than CHMM2. thanks for this! now I can simply change theme from 3DS menu, instead of going to CHMM2 everytime and pressing the power button. theme cycle in CHMM2 also has bug, where the audio of any theme will be stopped almost at the end, and it doesnt loop.

I do have some comments for Howling:
1. The Folder Structure limitation can be difficult at times, since it expect exactly 3 folders. I think it would be nice if the software can access any given folders, as long they contain theme sub-folders
2. If I navigate into a folder with a wrong structure, the file explorer just closes and I have to reopen all directory tree again. I think it's best if the file explorer just stays open. Also, it took me a while to understand what's happening with the wrong folder structure error message (I always have problem in reading Readme files
3. It cannot save the list of my precompiled cia (I think, I haven't test all features properly). so If I need to modify my cia, I need to start fresh.
4. it's a minor thing, but the temp folder is stored at C: directory, which is strange. I expect the temp should just be in the Howling directory.

anyway, this is a good app indeed. thanks a lot!
Request 3 and 4 are ready for the next Howling Theme Tool release. They are already coded.
About request 1, I will not do that. The structure it's for "Official", "Custom" and "NSFW" themes to have them arranged.
About request 2, that's a Window's API issue. I just call it via function. Anyway, I can take the last readed path and call it back again. I will do that for the next release.

It's a lot of work:
install the file, decrypt it, convert the icons, extract the filenames, convert the bgm, create the preview.....
if are custom ones, go to 3dsthem.es and download the theme there
if officials, go to that iso site... nothing more to say

Using SocketPunch FBI to install to SD card
The solution it's all over this thread (and answered also in the OP):
Do not use FBI to install the theme packages, use BigBlueMenu / DevMenu instead.
All of the existing homebrew CIA installers (including FBI, NASA, SOON!2...) have the same problem because of the homebrew SDK. You must not install DLC cia files with homebrew CIA installers (themes are dlc content). Use official Nintendo's installer (DevMenu or his mod BigBlueMenu) instead.

The more e-mails they recive about this (from different users, do not send them a storm by your own), the fastest they will fix it.
Why you use GW nowadays?

So, because these CIAs we create delete all existing themes, how do we use these in combination with themes we've purchased? Is there any way to have these just ADD to your theme list and not overwrite it? Or do we have to get pirated versions of our legit purchased themes off of that iso site and install them along with are custom package?

you have to get pirated versions of our legit purchased themes or extract them yourself from your installed content on your SD card.
both options are OK

You don't have web browser installed? O.o
Usually it's the only title with red name in BigBlueMenu/DevMenu.
But you actually should look for CTR-M-HMME-00, CTR-M-HMMP-00 or CTR-M-HMMJ-00.
If you have one of these - delete it before installing new theme pack.

By the way, @Chelsea_Fantasy, I actually wouldn't recommend people looking for theme pack
under browser. Some people may use SDK 11.4 DevMenu and it shows few more system titles.
Themes will be under "Miiverse Portal for ##" in that DevMenu, so it'd be better for people to
just search for exact themes' Product Code/Unique ID. Also, old DevMenu doesn't show sys titles at all.

That's old DevMenu, part of SDK 2.3.4, if I recall correctly.
And it's the only version that can overwrite titles without uninstalling them first,
so you actually don't have to uninstall old theme pack if you have that DevMenu.
Also, that version of DevMenu doesn't show any system titles, so it's OK that you
can't see your browser. Only BigBlueMenu and DevMenu 11.4 will show it.:)

For some reason this isn't working for me on A9LH sysNAND :(

It's acting crazy, from 19 themes it installs some of the ones I already had but not all 19 and it installs some original themes from the eShop, which makes no sense at all...

Edit: Managed to fix it by deleting all theme data on system settings but now I encountered a new problem, what should I do when the audio from 1 theme overlaps another? All themes work fine but 1 that gets audio from others

@MichMaster
The solution for your issue it's in this thread from the bottom to the top. I will just copy/paste it:
Before installing a new package, you should delete the previous one.
I also recommend you to choose two simple themes (red and blue) as shuffle to clear the theme's extdata cache before installing the new package (to avoid audio and body issues).
