Wow! Your install pics are awesome. I'm still awaiting to receive my wiikey (clone?). I have attempted soldering in the past but never with much satisfaction. I always feel like I need a 3rd hand. One to hold the wire, one for the iron and one for the solder. How do you guys do such clean jobs? Is there a device or clamp that helps hold the wire? Do you just build up the point with the solder first and then re-melt it? I plan to practice before doing my install but any tips would be greatly appreciated.Â

I didn't hold the wire against the board. I tinned the wire and got a little bit on the iron, and that was more than enough.

My tests with ONLY tinning the wire actually were the cleanest.

And as for holding the wire then, I just bent it upward so it could support itself (still on the spool).

Here's my install.... Not the best, not the worst.

I've done several PS2 installs so have some experience. Wiikey was much easier than any of the PS2 installs.

are those burn marks on the PCB? does it work alright?

in the world of soldering, less is more guys. If you're having trouble putting down just a dab of solder, just practice more on an old vid card or whatever first. don't risk your precious wii because of a little impatience.

but hey, if it works, it works.

Your install is not the best I have ever seen, but I have to say, your picture is one of the most professional pictures of a wiikey install I have ever seen.

BTW, your install is really good though. Your picture makes it even look better.

No burn marks, it's flux. I couldn't get the solder to take on those points so I used some flux. Didn't have anything around to clean up the leftover flux.

!!! How did you get your cables plugged back into the DVD drive? You are just asking for trouble having the wires like that. That's a great location for the chip but you should have routed the wires out of the way. Putting it back together had to have put pressure on your chip wires, your ribbon cable, your white DVD cable (power?), or all of the above. If it's still acting dodgy I would take it off and make a clean install.

LazyCus, yeah i see what your saying but I didnt leave it like that before i put the wii back together.

I moved all the wires so that the dvd cable goes in fine etc - i just didnt take a better picture.

When i did my own mod, i stuck the chip in the middle of the board where the center of the dvd drive is. Had no probs at all.

Im doing several more mods soon, and i think ill keep in the same place as the photo, but will re-route the wires better.

This is how I installed the wiikey in my friends wii:

It sits just perfectly snug in that corner and needs no additional fixation.
I ordered mine from konsolenprofis.de (german shop) which also provided some ultra thin wire.

Looks nice, works perfect and easy removeable.

I think self-installing is impossible when see wiikey,
so, I go to shop(electrinic device repair shop) , and he installed wiikey.
He not use wire. just directly install

I took it to my father to do it because he has soldering experience, but he studied it for a few minutes and decided not to. Luckily, he knew someone who worked at a factory that assembled circuit boards and stuff, so I got it done for free.
