Has anyone bothered to keep the rubber gasket from the old screen? I feel that's a thing to reuse to help keep a majority of the dust out in the long run.

Not me. The fit is tight enough as is. Plus, you can always lift the lens, give the screen a blast of air then replace the screen.

Made the mod yesterday. Somehow the AGS-101 display is showing pale colors.
I am using the 101 display with an 40 pin adapter:

Any way to fix this without switching to a 32 pin mainboard?

That's weird. I have done 3 mod's using 40pin board and 40pin adapter, no soldering and colours are bright and contrast is spot on. Have you messed about with the pot by any chance? Or, are you sure it is a 40 pin adapter you have?

This looks exactly like my first attempt at the mod. The problem I had then was the wrong ribbon for my screen.

@Ben Ten's Dad: I got the one on the right:
pinadapter.JPG

But you are right there are two types of adapter cables:

40 Pin GBA -> AGS-101 Typ AB
40 Pin GBA -> AGS-101 Typ B
32 Pin GBA -> AGS-101 Typ AB & B

Playing with the pot also did not change much.
Connecting REVC + GND gives a better picture but some kind of ghosting.
So I think I have to search for another solution or get a 32 Pin mainboard.

This is the one I got:

Really straightforward. 40 pin mobo, no soldering, lovely bright screen with perfect contrast.

One other thing - are you using a brown tab or white tab screen? The brown tab should be used on 40 pin mods whereas the white tab screen should be used with 32 pin mods. This could be your problem. You may be using a white tab on a 40 pin mobo. You will need 32 pin adapter and 32 pin mobo to use the white tab - this will require soldering whereas 40 pin does not.

Here you can see that there are also two kind of AGS-101 screens:

Looks like I am having a Type B display and the chinese adapters are for Type AB displays.
So the easiest solution would be buying a 32 PIN mainboard :)

They do sell 40 pin ribbons for white tab, that's what I've got in mine. They'll say in the description what screen they're for. It's a lot easier to just get the new ribbon than a different motherboard and ribbon.

So, all these white tabs I have received could have been used for the mod after all? Did you need to solder? The reason I went down the 40 pin/brown tab route was because no soldering was needed.

Think I'll do this with a frontlit version.

I got an AGS-101 off ebay for cheap because the case was broken to shit but the hardware was perfect, and put that into an NES edition GBA SP and I'm loving it.
It'd be nice to have a lit first gen GBA too.

Confirm what?

Do you mean pre-modded consoles? If so, then yes. In fact, I've got a few up for grabs right now. I have them posted on a few forums that I frequent.

That's a beauty! How do you get that color? Do you dye a clear blue glacier shell with Red DYE?
Can you explain the exact process?
I've read somewhere that you have to heat water, add the dye, and then acetone.

Fairly certain you'd have to make a mold of an existing housing and use translucent coloured epoxy/resin/whatever it is these people use in said mold.

I remember seeing a dmg-01 themed case for the gba, made by rose coloured gaming. That was hands-down the best case I have seen for the gba but it was going for silly money.
