Nathan Drake's News Flash: July 26th - 29th

TBMNO9V.jpg

Hey everybody. As you may already know, I recently joined the Magazine Staff here at GBAtemp, and one thing I've already started to struggle with is figuring out what news is worthy of our portal. From Japanese game announcements that may never be localized, to gameplay details revealed for some games, to smaller indie game announcements for the PS4 or otherwise, there is a lot of little news that I don't necessarily see fit to post on the portal for various reasons. To remedy that and make things a little bit easier, I'm starting a biweekly news roundup where I collect bits and pieces of news from around the web and my GBAtemp inbox to compile a list of various news that may appeal to you.

This is currently set to be a twice a week feature covering the following time periods:
Saturday evening through Wednesday afternoon (PST)
Wednesday evening through Saturday afternoon (PST)

Although this first edition does just cover Sunday, July 26th through Wednesday afternoon, July 29th.

The format may change in the coming weeks as I figure out what works best, but just bear with me. Most importantly, enjoy the news!

Dragon Quest Builders Trailer

It's been a busy month for Dragon Quest, and although I've reported two other bits in here, I'm not done yet. In case you missed it, there was a new Dragon Quest Builders trailer. It's looking pretty good for what is, on a basic level, a Minecraft clone, and the seemingly little to no text makes a western release seem very likely. The game is set to release in Japan this Winter for PS3/PS4/Vita.

For those that want to see images, please mention what you would like to see in as much detail as you can muster. Keep in mind that a major goal of this piece is delivering news in a clean and concise fashion, and too many images does pose the risk of running counter to that goal.
I like the format you have already; this was very well done! Maybe for the most prominent news item(s) you could insert a small image, almost akin to featured content.

Something like an icon/picture related to the topic would be good, and better spacing.

Imagine something like this but with a 2d Mario sprite leading to the title of Mario related news, now that would be great.
I appreciate the idea and will continue to collect input. Do clarify on what you mean by spacing though. Too much excess space is a bad thing, and I'd like to avoid unnecessary spacing of these small pieces.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

There are two things I should make clear to everybody though as I continue to collect feedback:

1) I am largely working on this independently. This is not a collaborative effort. I get input from the other staffers and the banner was made for me, but this is something I purposed and went ahead with on my own. As such, what I do with it needs to stay within my skill set and time allotment for the piece. Basically, I can not expect other people to do my work for me outside of an emergency or an unusually large amount of work, which leads into my next point.

2) I am artistically challenged. I may as well put it plainly that my presentation aims for a uniform look top to bottom that avoids personal artistic flare. Any ideas that require me to go a step beyond and actually create images, whether it be creative little icons or otherwise, is completely beyond my capability. I also can't expect another staffer to on the fly be able to craft potentially a dozen or more new small images every few days consistently from now to however long this feature may last for (which will hopefully be a long time). That isn't to say I can't add absolutely any custom images, but they would have to be more of the permanent sort for every issue, which I'm at least a few releases off of being prepared to commit to.

With all of that said, I do also want to make it clear for all that we are listening, but there is one thing that will absolutely not happen and that I may as well address now:

I will never have an image for every article. Although that is half explained via number one (see: time allotment), I created this piece with a purpose: I want to deliver small pieces of news in a decently large number in a concise fashion. That's why I decided against images completely on this release. I couldn't think of a way that I could balance images in the post that wouldn't go against the idea of concise news delivery. It wasn't even a lengthy internal debate for me. It was more "would this work" with a fairly obvious "no, not based on my goals". If every small article basically takes up the same amount of post space as a smaller front page article, the purpose of this piece has been completely lost. That's why everything is largely set apart by single spaces and source links marking the cut off point with bolded titles marking the start. It is organized news delivery that gives attention to news that would otherwise pass GBAtemp by due to the needs of our portal, and I'm making it a point to differentiate it from your standard full front page post because that is precisely what it is not.

All of that said, I have listened, and I do have some ideas and otherwise already that will likely make it into Saturday's edition due to the feedback given. Although I still don't have plans for a large amount of images at this time, I have an idea to spice up the News Flash a little that I hope you'll all like. Presentation changes will be a little more gradual though as I figure out what works. For the most part, I think general organization is okay and won't require too many changes over time, but I'll still experiment a bit and see if I strike presentation gold at some point. If I can think up some permanent headings that will apply in every piece, I may see about getting header images made, for example. For now though, I'll largely be sticking to what I can accomplish with some of the more basic BB Code options until this feature matures.

I apologize for the large post, but I felt there were things I needed to address now before people started getting too extravagant with their suggestions.

Maybe do pictures or maybe even videos for the ones that should stick out even among these? Maybe the one that stands out the most or has more news for each section.
