Reggie Fils-Aime talks about Metroid Federation Force and fan backlash

metroid_prime_federation_force_a.jpg

After the dismayed outcry of Metroid fans during E3, Nintendo of America's president, Reggie Fils-Amie stepped up to discuss the criticism of the new "Metroid" game. He likened the problems of "Metroid Prime: Federation Force", to what happened when "Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker" was announced, back in the day.

Here's what I would state: we know what our fans want. We will also push the envelope in developing something that we know is high-quality and that we know will deliver in the marketplace. The best example I can give you of this, and I think you will appreciate it, is Legend of Zelda Wind Waker. Remember when that art style was first shown. The uproar from the Zelda community was intensely negative. If there had been social media then, there probably would have been a petition to make that game go away.

...So, the game is developed, becomes one of the most beloved games of all time, one of the most highly-rated games of all time, so I use that example to say: 'We know what we're doing, trust us, play the game and then we can have a conversation.

Look, we know that the fans want a straight Samus Aran game. We also know that the best way to launch a game like that is to surprise and delight them, to give them a launch date, in an environment like this let them play it vs. what other companies do which is to announce a project that you may not see for five, six years. It's just not the way we do things. We know the community wants to see a straight-up Metroid game. We know it.

He states that Nintendo knows that fans want a new Metroid game. Maybe there's still a little hope for a new fully-fledged entry to the franchise.

I think that the analogy he used is correct, seeing that Wind Waker sucked ass when it was announced, it sucked ass when it was released and it continues to suck ass today, now in HD. Gotta hate Toon LoZ, it's a brown smear on LoZ's underpants. ;O;
I am offended by this statement.

Sounds like they are already working on a new Metroid/Samus title, but won't say or show anything about it until they have something ready for a hands-on demo. In the mean time they have this Federation Force to fill the gap while we wait.

I don't care. I would rather get papercuts on my eyeballs than play that game. It feels like a bastardized version of a once great franchise to me - gimme TP or SS style anytime, but wipe Toon Zelda off the face of the Earth. Mind you, I don't expect people to agree with me, I'm well-aware that having good taste is a rare quality these days.

Skyward Sword? Skyward Sword was boring.

I was talking strictly about the art style, don't mind me - to me Zelda games stopped being even remotely interesting after ALTP. ;)

Edit: I lie, Season/Ages were great.

ok now that i can agree with i loved ALttP to this day probably my favorite Zelda game

also i couldn't help but laugh at the line "We know what we're doing, trust us" in the article yea if they knew what they were doing why did E3 for Nintendo seem a bit underwhelming this year? Hell i got more excited for the new Pokemon Mystery Dungeon game announcement then i did for most of what i saw on nintendo's E3 stream.

GBA, right? I should give those a shot. Been looking for some GBA games to play once I finish Golden Sun.

I don't feel like Nintendo is even attempting to listen to us, which is just disappointing. They made so many claims that the 3DS and Wii U will be for the fans, yet all I've seen from them is Nintendo pissing all over us.

I don't think Nintendo ever really understood Metroid's fanbase. Metroid has never done well in Japan, outside of Other M, and Nintendo still is a bit more Japanese oriented, considering they're Japanese. I have to wonder what they would do with a main franchise Metroid game. Would they continue going the Other M route to make the more Japanese audience happy or go back to a more traditional Metroid to appease the more traditional Metroid fans? Maybe try some middle ground? Though a middle ground would probably make neither happy.

I know no one here has the answers, those questions were more rhetorical. I'll tentatively keep my eye out, but I don't have any hopes for the franchise, but maybe Nintendo will surprise me.

it seems Nintendo don't have a clue what their doing lately their only catering to the Japanese market that means make as many mario games as possible, cut off 3rd party support and leave the wiiu to die in favor of the 3ds. i've said it before and i'll say it again. IWATA HAS TO GO!

That comparison with wind waker falls kind of flat. I just watched the first trailer of it, and then the Federation force trailer. The first one is, despite different graphics, instantly recognizable as a Zelda game. In the last one...I didn't even know there was a metroid game shown in ninty's presentation until afterwards (I kind of dozed off and didn't catch the title).
More importantly: it's on the 3DS. People wanted a metroid game to show off the wiiu graphic capabilities since the launch of the console.

And while subjective, I'd also argue that it's been longer. Between the main console zelda games (majora's mask -> wind waker) were...what? 2.5 years? (not counting 4 swords or the GBA ones here). On consoles, it's been since 2007 since the last prime game (not counting other M and trilogy). That's been a while...even more so if you compare it to how busy they are milking the Mario and Zelda franchises lately.

Skyward Sword's art style was very similar to WW

"We know what we're doing with Metroid"

Yeah, Other M was unanimously adored by all Metroid fans.

No. They don't know what they're doing. All this generation and last Nintendo have just been testing to see how low they can go with the quality of their first-party franchises while still being praised as master game makers.

Out of all the people here screaming scandal, may I ask how many of you played Hunters?

It was a mediocre Metroid Prime game with an awesome online-fps mode. I believe the game was still considered to be one of the best DS games ever released, despite the awful bosses and the online cheaters (and Trace being ridiculously broken, but w/e). And all of the other hunters were new, like this game.
I liked Metroid games, but I really wanted a cheat-free version of Hunters since 2008, the year I bought the game. This might look like it, so they have my attention.

Also, Zelda games suck ass, regardless of the title.
