R4 v.1.06 Kernel Released

The beta is over

This is a mild update from 1.06 beta, but if the betas scare you, then it's all new to you. Here are the changes from v.1.05:

· Hiding the display of those files and directories with "Hiding" attributes.

· Using the L button is the same as touching the screen to adjust the brightness.

· Narrowing the display for transditional Chinese characters.

· Background light will now turn off while closing DS in save mode.

· Soft reset included (L+R+A+B+X+Y) or touch the soft reset button with R to switch on/off this function.

· Decreasing possibility to experience the triforce boot screen and noise caused by using soft reset.

· Improving the technique to issue of freezing menu while using soft reset.

· Adds feature of large text size in eBook.

· eBook is also skinnable (create bckgrd_1.bmp & bckgrd_2.bmp in folder /_SYSTEM_/EBOOK)

NOTE: Due to the nonsynchronous of the audio and video, Moonshell temporarily does not support soft reset, but we will update with a new edition supporting it as soon as possible.

Although r4ds.net says Beta still, the site's also been updated with the final v1.06 if you go into the Downloads part. Much faster than the .com link posted here.

EDIT: Never mind. For some reason it was displaying the old page when I went to the .net from my Google personal page. It's updated on the homepage for the .net site too.

I had the version someone had made up with the new moonshell. Was hoping the reset would have been fixed in this.

What is this "ebook feature"? How does it work?

On the R4 website it says they'll fix reset for moonshell next version.

The ebook function is a built-in .txt reader that allows you to open txt files in the R4 shell (without moonshell) by pressing select to show ebooks, then selecting the txt file.

You can scroll through different text colours, use veritcal or horizontal to read, bookmark locations and exit back to the game menu seemlessly. Not a huge feature but hey, it's very cool to see the R4 team adding new things.

I upgraded to this from 1.6b earlier, and the first time I did a soft reset the microsd card became corrupt.

Windows mongs out if I insert the card whilst it's running, and linux recognises the card but won't let me write to (or read from) it at all.

I can't even delete the partition and start again.

A good job microsd card's have long warrantee's. :>

having problems getting my skins to wo rk i put them in the _syste folder_ but i get the defualt skin :-( anyone know what im doing wrong

Remember that all must be in 8 or 24bit .BMP format and each image must have a resolution of 256x192 pixels. This is how your skins should be placed from the root directory of your flash memory:

X:\_SYSTEM_\LOGO.BMP
X:\_SYSTEM_\ICONS.BMP
X:\_SYSTEM_\BCKGRD_1.BMP
X:\_SYSTEM_\BCKGRD_2.BMP
X:\_SYSTEM_\EBOOK\BCKGRD_1.BMP
X:\_SYSTEM_\EBOOK\BCKGRD_2.BMP

The EBOOK ones are new to this version, so don't expect too many skins out there to carry backgrounds for them as of yet. As soon as I see the layout of eBook, then my own skins will be updated to accomidate.

Looks correct. Only thing I can assume is that the .bmp's were saved incorrectly. Try a different skin and see if it works. Other than that, I have no idea ;o

yeah tried other ppl's skins but no luck ............... i used a old firmware and it worked fine

anyone running the new firmware with new skins ?

Using the new firmware with a skin I made and it worked on previous firmware as well.

Yeah, the bandwidth on my server got killed for the first time ever

It's the end of the month anyway so it'll reset in another day. But err, mine aren't any different from any other skin. To be honest, I have absolutely no idea why it's not working for ya. Solution to everything usually is to just wipe the whole card clean (minus roms I guess) and start over ;p And yes Jez. That's the only new thing from the beta. They said soft-reset in moonshell would work, but then retracted that when it didn't. They also said that it got rid of the "noise" shown when you soft-reset, but I've still seen it with a couple games. That's about it.
