I didn't want to make a second thread in two days, so I'm gonna try posting in this thread.

I'm trying to get to Gateway Mode on my 4.4U 3DS (GW version Ultra 3.0.4). I can access the Gateway Menu just fine via the DS Profile exploit, but any time I choose Boot Gateway Mode or Boot Classic Mode, the system hangs and I have to hard reset.

The red card is inserted, and has a 32GB Sandisk Class 10 microSD card in, formatted exFAT.
The SD card inside my 3DS is an 8GB Sandisk Class 4, formatted FAT32. It has the 3.0.4 launcher.dat on it.
I have updated the Gateway successfully (and forced another update by holding R when launching the menu).
I have formatted my emuNAND multiple times (and have backed up my sysNAND to my PC, don't worry!)
I have run diagnostics on the red card, everything came back green.

Any ideas?

I am not a 4.x user but have a few things you can try.
1. Format the SD card with SD Formatter v4 from SD association. It's free and the official way to format Sd cards. This will wipe out emunand so you will need to reformat that.
2. Do you have a better class SD card or mSD card with adapter you can try? People seem to have problems with class 4 cards.
3. Use a different card reader on the PC? I discovered my card reader on my HP printer was malfunctioning and corrupting files. So I got an $8 usb reader from Walmart.
4. Is your 4.4 sysnand virgin or did you downgrade from a higher version, just curious. If you downgraded you could try upgrading to 8.1 with a retail cart and see if it works. Then downgrade again, maybe the downgrade got fubared.
5. Just thought of this, you can use yor 32 GB mSD with adapter for testing, the GW does not need memory to boot emunand.

1) I'm gonna try that today - I'm a Linux user and there's no SD Association tool for Linux, so I'm gonna try when I get to campus and their Windows computers. I tried getting it running on Wine but no dice.
2) I don't, unfortunately, but I'll try your suggestion 5) with the 32GB class 10 in.
3) I've tried both my internal reader and a USB mSD reader, and neither have ever given me corrupted files. Also, the file on the card matches MD5 hashes with the one on my hard drive, that came straight out of the Gateway 3.0.4.zip.
4) It's virgin, never been upgraded past 4.4U. (Lucked out and found it at that version at a pawn shop, for $30! :D) Is there any way to check and see if I "partially" updated? I've seen people on forums say that that has caused problems - but if that were the case, I imagine that the DS Profile exploit wouldn't work anymore.

Edit: I got it!! I put the 32GB class 10 in the 3DS and it works fine, so I guess that was the problem. I'm currently on firmware "GW3D 4.4.0-10U." Thanks yet again for your help, thorsasgar. Looks like I'll be getting another class 10.

Wow, I have tried pawn shops a few times but I guess I suck at bargaining.

I don't know if there is any advantage to a virgin 4.x so I am reluctant to suggest the upgrade to 8.x test. Last resort maybe.

Do you have eshop purchases or saves you want to preserve? If not formatting sysnand and starting with a clean slate is never a bad idea when mucking around like this. Good Luck. My wife is in town this weekend so I won't be on here much until next week.

Hi all, I have been experiencing a problem since yesterday.

I yesterday updated to emunand 9.5 and replaced my launcher with the newest one (3.0.4). Emunand launches fine and the update went smoothly

When I went to open multi rom it read 'Read Error'. I ran a diagnostic and it said the SD had failed. My SD is Samsung EVO 32 GB class 10.

I formatted the SD using SD formatter 4 and moved my files over using Teracopy. But I'm still getting the issue.

I don't get why it isn't working now, it worked fine last week before I updated everything. Has my GW failed or my SD (the back light is blue when the card is put in)?

Thanks in advance

SD formatter will not format a 32GB card as exFAT so you would need to use windows to try that.
When you say SD card are you refering to the internal SD CARD or the mSD card in the gateway? That error sounds like a mSD error. Make sure you use specific terms or people will get confused. :)
Try reseating all the cards.
I have one of those cards as well and they are good but shit happens.
Did you make a backup of your 9.4 emunand with the emunand tool? If so you could load that up and see if you can at least get back to where you were.

Ah apologies, I meant the mSD in the GW card. The computer recognises the card just fine, so I formatted it to exFat and... nothing :ohnoes:

The only other SD I currently have available that's of a good size is the one in the 3DS so I can't check if it's across other cards yet. Are we ruling out that it's a problem with my GW card then?

And I made the carnal sin of not backing the 9.4 emunand (I THOUGHT I DID I SWEAR) - but since I had 9.2, I could just remove the emunand and make a partition with 9.2 right?

Don't rule out anything, but there have been very few reports of bad gateway cards.

Good point on emunand. Mainly we are just testing to see if it all works there is not a difference between 9.2 and 9.4, so create a 9.2 emunand and use your old launcher and see what happens. If it does work then start upgrading one step at a time and find the fault. Start with 3.0.4 launcher, then update emunand to 9.5.

Hey, so I have a working Gateway 3DS and want to put a new save on a retail Pokemon Omega Ruby cart. Is this possible?
As in a blank fresh save? Um I think most carts allow you to create saves in new slots and delete old ones. If you mean inject an existing save into the cart? No clue.

ok being nob here , whats a rednand and why to havedon't have one? o-o
I think it is created with CFW. CFW is buggy and not noob friendly so don't go there. I have no interest in a FW that only boots 10% of the time.

Quick question. I have a Gateway, but my microSD got lost in the post so I still don't have one. Can I still set up my Gateway without one, and install CIAs? Or if not, could I borrow someone elses microSD to install, but then after everything's installed give the microSD back?

I think you can get by without a mSD card but it's not like I have tried to do it.

Aaah, seems like I need a microSD for installing BigBlueMenu. Thanks for the reply though. I'm assuming after I've installed the CIAs and I'm in emunand, I don't need the Gateway card (until I restart my 3ds) , correct?

Ok I formatted again, removed the EmuNand and re-Partitioned, I put the original 3.0.1 launcher back in and...still nothing!

I can't seem to get why it has messed up on me. Is there anything else that I can do?

Nope, not correct. you need the gateway card to stay all the time in the card 1 slot during gateway mode emunand, but it doesn't have to carry a micro sd inside

Oh, I thought I saw people earlier recommending people eject the Gateway while playing CIAs to save battery life? Anyway, no worries, I just realised I had a microSD in my R4 that I've now pinched for my Gateway. :)
