Here's what you do, kids - trade in your old hardware, pay the modest price difference and enjoy an indisputably better system. Problem solved, Foxi4 has spoken.

But kids don't have money, even if they sell their old devices...

The DS did not have a 9-year lifespan, it was replaced with the DSi which featured numerous hardware improvements, or is GBATemp's memory selective now?

The Dsi did not get exclusive AAA content. It got Dsiware games, but those were not the same thing. Even the latest NDS games like Pokemon B&W 2 were perfectly playable on the original DS, so, yes, the DS had 9-year lifespan...

The DSi did not get the content it deserved because the fanbase is a bunch of whiners - its CPU's were twice as fast and it had four times the memory, but it was a wasted opportunity to create better games because Nintendo clung to the install base of the original model - I hope they will not repeat this mistake and will instead give this new model justice by releasing relevant software.

As for the DS's lifespan, it ended the moment the last DS Lite left the assembly line. Sure, games were still made for it, but once again I remind everyone about DSi Enhanced features such as webcam support or WPA.

SEGA went out of the hardware business with similar moves as this... Seems Nintendo's greed is blinding its judgement...

What does greed have to do with this, Nintendo's not forcing you to buy this new system. Its not like they bricked all other 3ds to get this system and just because it has one exclusive does not mean its a must have system seller to begin with.

We live in a world where smartphones cost exponentially more than consoles and are released on a yearly basis, but God forbid a console is improved or the fans will go ape. Get a grip - nobody forces you to upgrade. Interested in the exclusive content? Upgrade. Not interested? Hold on to your 3DS - it will continue to get new software anyways like the DS did before it during the DSi period.

I hate it. If I don't buy one, it will make me angry that I can't play the exclusive games. If I buy one, it will make me angry that I paid so much money for being able to play only a few exclusive games.
Nintendo should release only entirely new handhelds or hardware revisions with e.g. a better screen.

Satoru Iwata also mentioned that several other titles are in development exclusively for the New Nintendo 3DS. These will not be playable on the old 3DS models.
Also,
The remake is something they’ve previously wanted to do for the Nintendo 3DS, but were not able to due to its lack of CPU power, but now that it’s getting a boost with the newer version, it has been made possible.
This is PR bullshit.

Not forcing, per say, but being strongly persuaded. If Nintendo goes down the route of basically making all important games New 3DS exclusive, the 3DS will essentially die off. I would like to pretend this won't happen, as I doubt Nintendo would kill a 3 year old console, but we'll have to simply wait and see just how many "exclusives" the New 3DS gets.

I honestly think the easiest way to avoid all issues and fuss is to simply make the games have "enhancements" if played on a New 3DS instead of a 3DS. As in, playing a game on a New 3DS would grant you better framerate, nicer controls, and maybe some shinier graphics, but the game will still run on a normal 3DS, as to not cut off that portion of the userbase.

I doubt Xenoblade will be the last AAA game exclusive to the new handheld. I am willing to bet they will move even originally planned for the 3ds AAA games to the "new 3ds", to force people to upgrade.

Of course, i can still play my 3DS. I can still play my NES, for that matter...

I guess all of you would be happier if this was called the 4DS and it wouldn't play 3ds games too, thus making it an entirely new console that simply shares the screenmakeup and most buttons with the old 3ds??

This is cool, but makes me wonder how close we are to their next handheld :( I'd hate to buy this and then a year later "Nintendo WiiDS, The successor to the 3DS! We expect high sales numbers :V"

I've seen many who complain about "buying a 3DS XL just a few months ago" and accuse Nintendo for screwing them over.

The original 3DS was released on Feb 26, 2011 in Japan. It has been ~3.5 years since it was released. For Western launch this will be even longer since it won't be out until 2015.

And I still see many queuing up for the latest Galaxies and iPhones every year with little complaint...

Yeah thats true it might not be the last game but its not like people cant exist with a regular 3ds. You are not force to buy anything.

A company enticing users to buy products?! What is this heresy?!

Like I said, too soon. The original DS had Nintendo's full attention (Black/White was not a DSi exclusive, for example) up until the 3DS came out, which was 9 years. The 3DS will seemingly only have Nintendo's full attention for ~4 years, and then be tossed to the wayside when the New 3DS comes out and begins to have all its "exclusive" games.

For the billionth time: phones are not the same case. An Android phone, regardless of its age, can use any Android app on the market. How well it can use the app is debatable (lag, FPS drops, etc.), but it can still use them. I would like to see Nintendo handle the 3DS and New 3DS similarly: allow both to play all games, but give the New 3DS the ability to fully use its new "more powerful" hardware.
