It's been a while since I did the redsn0w jailbreak on my iPhone 4S for iOS 5 (not sure exactly which version). Today I foolishly updated my iPhone to iOS 7.0.4 and now it's in the recovery mode.

What exactly are my options now? I've really tried to look up solutions but with all the different variations, I hope someone can deal with my case specifically.

I'm sorry I can't give many more details. I'm not sure on a lot of things myself. If any specific details are necessary to get me out of this situation, I'll try my best to provide them.

Well first things first, try hard resetting the phone by pressing and holding the power and home buttons at the same time for 15+ seconds until the screen shuts off then the apple logo appears. If it boots to springboard, or the appscreen/lockscreen, then you restored before you updated (this is good, and it should work from here on out)

If this does not work, then you will have to go to itunes, backup your data, setup new phone then restore data manually.

What you can do from this point:
  • Jailbreak 7.0.4 (many tweaks incompatible, crashes frequently(at least on my i4),)
  • Stay on stock fw
What you cannot do:
  • Downgrade to iOS 5/6 (APT ticket and SHSH blobs do not work for 4S, or A5+)
Good luck mate, been there just recently, I messed up the iOS 6 install trying to create a tweak (without a mobile substrate hook) and had to restore to 7.0.4, a jailbreak is available but there is drama accompanied with it so do some googling before you proceed.

Thanks for the reply. I've already tried several things involving holding down the buttons to no avail. I've gone to iTunes and have received a message saying "iTunes has detected an iPhone in recovery mode. You must restore this iPhone before it can be used with iTunes." Is there a way to recover data when I have this showing up?

You can use evasi0n to jailbreak your iOS 7 device, do it as soon as possible before apple releases a new iOS.

Can someone please assist me? Is there a way to keep my data? It really isn't a big deal to do set up everything again but I'd just like to know in case it's possible.

I know this post may seem impatient but I'm just posting this to say that the issue still isn't resolved.

Try holding down the Home button and then plug in the Apple 30-pin cable into the iPhone and then the computer, while still holding the Home button, until you see the Apple logo.

If you don't see anything, you are stuck in Recovery. Therefore, there is no way to restore possible data. You must restore the phone.

Then, as ipwndeveloper said, you can either jailbreak iOS 7.0.4 with evasi0n 7 version 1.0.1, or stay on stock firmware. You CANNOT downgrade to iOS 5 or 6. It is impossible for your device.

for device data recovery, you can try to use iexplorer, or ifubox, or afc2 to try recover data via USB, you will eventually have to restore and you might not even have access, as it is unable to boot. You could also try Redsn0ws "Just Boot", but don't get your hopes up for the Just boot option as I think it only works for older devices that use Limera1n/SHAtter.
I wish you the best of luck in this situation, but last time I was stuck in DFU mode, I had to restore, hopefully you have a recent icloud/itunes backup. You can check this by using one of the many backup viewer clients available around the internet.
