there is nothing important about it (except maybe that it's annyoing to some people). with stealth other people can't tell from first sight if your ds is flashed or not - besides that i really don't see any difference.

@RyuKakashi A few people like having a DS appear to be/ act somewhat like a stock DS, quite why I have yet to figure out but to I suppose this falls under the "to each their own" deal.

regarding the video... damn opium, cut your nails! long nails on a guy != very nice to look at...
on the other hand, VERY nice explanation... major kudos... i'll have your guide in front of me when I'll be flashing my black DS Lite...

Hahaha

I thought someone would comment on that. Notice how my nails are only long on my right hand? I play the acoustic guitar and I don't use a pick, so I use my nails for strumming

Great guide -- I wish I'd had information this centralized when I was doing my Lites.

EDIT: Isn't there a homebrew program you can use to "practice" flashing with? Like, you can use it to short SL1 without actually installing FlashMe such that if you fucked up and knocked out the power you'd be fine. I think something like that would be helpful for a lot of people, and I could have sworn I heard that it existed. Any help?

Great guide. I think its next week their release in Europe. Hopefully I'll be able to get my hands on one. I just hope as long as the tools insulated its as easy as flashing the normal DS.

Ok..cool guide and all that...but uh...call me stupid and/or ignorant. But what the hell's FlashMe and why do I want to do it to my DS Lite.

I just got a brand new black Lite and I was thinking about getting a cart....but I still don't know what's FlashMe and what I need it for. Also...it says that I can do the same to my DS. Is it easier to do it to my original DS than it is to my Lite?

(P.S. - Just wanna apologize for asking so many dumb questions in case some of ya'll get offended. Thanks).

Thanks to that stealth flashme I got away with a nintendo official at some party (who wanted to show me this game (nintendogs (yes waaaaaaayyyy back)) that had just come out like 2 hours ago (and that I already had for about a week
tongue.gif
). I only had time to pull my card before he proceded to stick a copy of nintendogs in my ds to show off the bark mode feature. I think he might have noticed if the health screen had not come up, after al, he did notice i had a dead pixel, dodged a bullet there!

Later on I exchanged my ds @ best buy, (after a quick flashme uninstall and resticking of that pink sticker) for one (luckily Firmware 1 still) without a dead pixel.

So I guess Stealth Flashme does come in handy sometimes.

Right at the top of the guide it tells you what Flashme is. Flashme is a hacked firmware for the DS and DS Lite. The only thing different with this firmware is that you do not need to use a passme or passcard device to boot up DS roms.

Installing flashme is technically easier on the original DS, although the SL1 hole is in a different spot. When you take off the battery cover the SL1 hole is the one underneath a tiny pink sticker.

What size screwdriver fits with the battery cover screw? Specifically the DS Lite if that screw is different.

On the screwdriver I used it says #00, usually if you buy a small set of phillips screwdrivers it'll be the smallest one there.

Well lots of people have shared their experience of how to safely replace the firmware of a Lite with flashme, but for those still hovering on the edge (like I was) here are some additional tips, not all of which have been well covered.

But first the critical issue, the tool you will use to short the SL1 bridge. In my preparation I foolishly ignored the advice of others on the forum. I thought it would be better to use a hard metal contact, a miniature screwdriver or a piece of insulated thick, copper, single-cored wire - both with only the tip exposed, the rest insulated.

WRONG, WRONG, WRONG! After 15 solid minutes of gentle jiggling I could not get past 1%. As my panic rose I hastily made what others have recommended. Using a wooden skewer (I didn't have a toothpick), I wrapped the tip 'sort of tight' with foil (very fiddly...I used about 1 sq inch of foil to start with) and then secured it in place by tightly wrapping cellotape over the foil only leaving a few millimetres of foil exposed.

This worked IMMEDIATELY and thats because the foil is compressible, so as you insert it and gently push down it shorts SL1 whereas a hard object seems to have major trouble making contact across the gap. Ok some people have got screwdrivers to work but my advice is HAVE SOME OPTIONS in case your single tool simply refuses to work! and I now agree the toothpick is the ideal tool

Some other tips.

You need to be able to carefully control the toothpick but at the same time you want to be able to see the DS's screen, so you can see if you are making progress. You can't do both without a mirror (or someone to help you).

So I sat in a chair at a solid table with good light, with my Lite plugged in to AC power (do not do this just relying on your battery!!). Have a small mirror (pinch one from your partner/mother/sister/daughter) to hand. With Passme2 and your flashcart inserted (loaded with flashme.nds) turn on your Lite.

Boot/run the flashme.nds file (however you need to do this with your gear). Press the required buttons on the DS until you have %0 displayed on the bottom screen (the % sign will be blinking). Being very careful not to accidently touch your on-off switch or disconnect your power lead, turn the Lite over and place it screen down near the edge of the table.

With a small screwdriver open and remove the battery cover. Place the mirror, facing you, on your knees, so you can see the edge of the table reflected in it. Gently slide the Lite toward you so that the bottom screen is off the table and therefore displayed in the mirror (with one hand supporting the Lite a bit and the top screen still on the table).

With your other hand you can now insert the toothpick carefully while at the same time seeing the bottom screen of the Lite reflected in the mirror.

It's a big relief when it gets to 100%....

Hey there,
I was one of those people who were hesitant to flash my new ds lite- what with all the dangers everybody was talking about. But i listened to the warnings that everybody said- mainly to insulate the tool you use and everything worked out just fine. Its VASTLY superior than using a passme. its was literally a weight off my back (or the DS's)
laugh.gif

so if your thinking about doing it or not- just do it! its really not that hard, and doesnt take very long at all.

Thanks for that guide, although it's not for me since I've done that
wink.gif
.

One thing occurred to me, however, which is not covered.

Since I might be buying a DS lite I was wondering:

Do I even need a passkey if I use a 'normal' GBA flashcard (Not M3/SC, but FA) and run that from there? I actually don't really think so but might try that later. Otherwise I'd need to buy a passkey2 (for flashing once...).

I'm a total N00B here and just got done flashing my JPN DS Lite.. works like a charm! If you're thinking about doing it... just do it!!

I was about to go the route of the Passcard 3 after three of my friends bricked their PSP's trying to downgrade them, but there was no need to worry. This is 100x safer as long as you're careful and "wrap your tool"!!

I used a toothpick wrapped in tin aluminum foil and insulated with scotch tape. At first, I got absolutely nothing. But when I pressed down slightly on the stick, it flashed perfectly.

Thanks for the guide!!!

On wiki, they said Flashme only lets you play homebrew DS roms, not commercial. Is that true?

I just need this straighten out to see if I'll flash my DS or not.

Also nice guide, Opium.
