Gaming Soft Reset

I have noticed that coders of homebrew and loaders go to a large effort to make soft reset work on different models of flash carts and I don't get it.

I have never seen a reason to use soft reset. Flick the power button at any time and it's back at the menu in a couple of seconds. I am sure this is easier than a complicated series of button presses.

As the conversations of soft reset continue and the efforts employed to rectify the problems continue I am left wondering if I am missing the point entirely.

So.... What the hell are the advantages of soft reset and why do we need it?

It's very useful to use soft reset.
Would you rather press 4 buttons (R4 Wood) and go back to the menu almost instantly, or turn off the power and than back on, watch the health thingy and than go back to the menu?

I guess I have just flicked the power button on and off and never thought twice about it.

It still seems like a lot of effort some times for such a small convenience.

It takes less time to boot back into the card than shutting down and starting over. Frankly, I love it.

360 has it, wii has it, ps3 probably has it, my psp has it, etc

It's to simulate being able to alt-tab. It's not really alt tabbing, but it's pretty close. I'd be upset if hardware didn't support it, it's 2010 guys. (as cliche as that argument is)

The more you use a power switch, the faster it will wear out.
So if you're having to repeatedly go in and out of a game it saves wear-and-tear on your equipment.

Its not good to just keep mashing the power switch.

Personally I don't think the power button is any more fragile than any of the others. The power sliders normally break during re-assembly of the DS lite.

Still, I guess I'm the odd one out as many people in these forums seem to use soft reset and fret when it is not working.

Interesting discussion. I usually am a total whore with Soft-Reset. I don't EVER want to turn my DS off; simply to avoid that stupid bloody safety warning at the start of the bootup. Could just be me that's really annoyed by that though.

You're not the only one.

I guess the real reason is that we would want to save some time playing games, rather than to waste a some time turning the DS off and on. Pressing just a few buttons isn't going to hurt anything. Turning the DS off and on continually will be a pain in the ass, IMO.

I think I just started using soft-reset because I thought it was a cool trick (you know- setting up tech for the sake of tech) and it just became a habit.

Then again, I do hate that H&S screen an awful lot: I actually FlashMe-d my Phat DS just to get rid of it.
