I just ran Jailbreak on my iPod Touch with successful results and I was curiously checking out the Cydia apps browser for some goodies to download. I came across a few but when wanting to download them I was bombarded with 'Just imput your Paypal information here and this awesome product will be yours for just [insert value here]'.

My question is; what is the point of jailbreaking your iPod Touch when things cost money anyway? Am I missing something here? What is so awesome about jailbreaking an iPod?

Only a small amount of apps from Cydia are paid products, and you can get them for free by the way...
Cydia was intended to host apps that Apple didn't approve (ex: has root access of the device). So if a developer wanted to sell an app for 0.99$ in the appstore but Apple wouldn't let him, he goes to Cydia and hosts it for the same price. Most people jailbreak to have an unlock (use any carrier), but that is only for iPhones. People usually jailbreak to use apps like winterboard which can change the appearance of your springboard (main screen) and most commonly to use apps like *snip, which lets you download almost all the apps in the appstore for free. So a jailbreak consists of removing any limitations put in your iDevice by Apple and leaving you with full control which is especially useful for customization.

1. "what is the point of jailbreaking your iPod Touch when things cost money anyway?" This makes you sound like a pirate. =.=

As metamaster said, it lets you have literally full control of your iDevice, taking away any restrictions that Apple put on it.

I wouldn't recommend *snip though since it's an app that pretty much encourages piracy.

Example: The 3Gs, iPhone 4, and iPod Touch 3G are the only iDevices that allow Apple-style wallpapers and multi-tasking, but if you jailbreak an earlier generation (iPhone 3G, iTouch 2G, etc.), you can activate these features (they aren't missing from the earlier generation-specific iOS 4, but just disabled), or you can have these features how jailbreakers intended it with apps you can only find through jailbreaking (Backgrounder for multi-tasking and Winterboard for not just wallpapers, but full-blown themes for the entire iDevice including icons, sliders, dock, everything except the apps themselves).

Oh no no no. No piracy intended. I'm talking about unlicensed software developer who gives out their programs for free and accepts donations and such.

Thanks everyone for the information.
