I don't know if this info is of interest to anyone, but here goes.

My Wii is a very early unit, maybe 3 months after the Wii's launch. Out of the box I installed Wiikey v1 in it which was flashed to FW 1.9s when SSBB came out. That's it as far as mods go, just the Wiikey, no other soft mods of any kind. Wii FW stayed at 3.2U ever since.

So with NSMB finally there's a game that interests me. Went to a few stores yesterday, no one will sell the game. Checked out Wii Sports Resort at Toys R Us and bought a copy. With the original retail disc, it updated my Wii to 3.4U. I tested the game, no problem. Tested all my backup DVDs, all played fine. Then I dumped Resort, burned at 8x, the backup plays perfect. Away from my kids I put the original DVD.

Just now I came back from Toys R Us, bought NSMB. Funny thing with this game. It prompted me to update, no surprise there, and I let it. Went relative quickly, maybe a minute. Now my Wii is at 4.1U. Just to make sure, I tested my Wii Resort backup. Works fine. I reinsert the original NSMB, it prompted another update. WTF? I ejected the disc and reinserted it. This time it said the disc (original disc no less) cannot be read. Double WTF?? Ejected it and put back the Resort backup, played fine.

Rebooted and booted NSMB, it prompts for a second update. I let it. This time it took much longer, like when I updated 3.2U to 3.4U from the Resort retail disc. About 3-4 minutes. It finished its thing and reboots. I check Wii settings, still at 4.1U firmware. What was that second update about?!

Checked my Wii Resort backup, still works. Rebooted with my retail NSMB disc, playing fine so far.

So bottomline, the original USA retail disc works fine on Wiikey'ed Wiis.

I'll dump the game shortly and see if it works.

This is the best news i've heard in a long time i have same exact setup as you
thanks for the info please let me know if a dump of the original works do you use rawdump2.0 ? i'm just wondering ?
going out to purchase the game now that i know i can play it, only problem i have is
i played the original of wii sports resort and updated my system
i'm still at ver 3.4 u on a wiikey v1 NTSC 1st day wii unit with 1.9s/x installed and working
on the 1.4 config disc i turned update block on
is this why when i played wii resort my system stayed at 3.4u ? how can i update to 4.1 u ?
i don't want 4.2u at all reading so many problems
so i can play original and backup of wii resort just wondering if a dump of the nsmb will work on my wiikey v1 at 3.4u ??
anyone know yet ?
thanks for your replies and helping me figure this confusion out

also if you go from 3.4u to 4.1u and installed the updates from the original nsmb
will the backup work then on wiikey v1 1.9 ?
i haven't ever encountered a problem with my wiikey to date

A question for the NTSC-U release.

I've got an NTSC 3.2U Wii with WiiKey 1.9. Will brickblock be enough to play this? It has been for every other game so far...

Thanks for any help.

ModChip Users:
-Try NeoGamma R8Beta7, which should be able to run the Game without any patches needed (Thanks WiiPower!). ISO MUST BE UNPATCHED!
I have a wiikey 1 modchip.
I have burnt a disc with an unpatched NSMB.
I've installed "IOS249-v14.wad".
I run the game with "NeoGamma R8Beta7".
And I get "The disc could not be read. Please refer to the Wii Operations Manual for details".

Whats wrong?

If you have PAL Wii then I have similar setup:
Wii PAL
wiikey v1 firmware 1.9s
4.2E menu

I was unable to start NeoGamma R8 beta 7 until I did A, B and C from this manual:
http://www.wiihacks.com/recommended-faqs-g...stem-menus.html

After this I was able to start NeoGamma R8 beta 7 . And I am using unpatched disk image. It does work so far.

Just extra info: I am using unpatched iso (untouched bu me, so it can be patched before).
The iso is the small image from wiisos (they released the full one later, but the first one does work for me)
My DVD-R media is TY (I will not be surprised if someone is getting a read error because of bad media)

Comment to the drivekey user. If you have an ntsc wii at 4.1 or lower firmware you should look for an ntsc dump. If your modchip settings are set to block all updates like mine then I'm thinking we will need a ntsc dump with the update removed and the dol patched and it should run from the disc channel. The other posts about the pal releases not working is because of the region of the release.

I bought it today with the Gamestop $9.99 trade in deal. Too cheap to pass that up.

I've also messaged drivekey about a new firmware for the modchip to address the protection on nsmb. I would think we could download the firmware, burn to a cd or dvd, insert into our wii and do the upgrade to take care of the issues and at that point we won't even need a patched copy. The original dump should work fine.

I have the solution, let's buy the game, update (it's only 4.1) and worry later about doing a proper backup (my kids will scratch the original ... GRRRR)

I have both Pal ver and NTSC ver and under Usbloader GX Pal ver works great for the NTSC ver getting Disc error when I try to run this ver it maybe that usbloader gx needs to be updated and then the NTSC ver will work. I'll just stay on the Pal ver for now.

Yes all my backups stills work after updating to 4.1u from the original NSMB disc.

Wii Resort came with 3.4u, maybe that's why you're still on it, not because update block of the wiikey.

I didn't even know there's an update block function, never booted into the wiikey setup disc.

I'm dumping it now, 2 hours to go. I use rawdump 2.1, only thing I've ever used. Only time I used friidump was with SSBB.

I doubt the dump will work based on what I've read here. I'll find out in 2 hours.

OK, I've tried two different releases of the PAL game and both give an error is detected with the game disc. They boot the game and I can play for 5-10 minutes before the error occurs. It seems to be randomly happening after 5-10 minutes or so.

3.2U, NTSC console with cIOS 15 and uLoader running 249.
