I've had my Wii hacked for a while now. I'm on 4.0u, have the homebrew channel installed and have been using the gamma launcher for a long time. Recently I discovered the USB launchers and so I decided to make a dedicated external harddrive for my Wii. I've been reading around and I've only been getting more and more confused on how to actually get started.

Basically, I want my dedicated external to be capable of playing movies off of it and playing games off of it. I generally prefer enclosures and saw that not all enclosures are supported for some reason. I currently own a Vantec Nexstar 3 which is said to have issues in playing games by the compatibility list. Will I need a new enclosure that would work flawlessly? I was planning on buying a new external hard drive anyways so it wouldn't be too much of a problem. If I do, does the hard drive inside matter as well?

So in preparing the drive, I believe I would have to make three partitions. One for the games, one for images, and one for the movies. Do all three have to be in fat 32? Or can I make the movie partition in ntfs? Also do I put the games on after reformatting the game partition to wfbs? And how would I do that? (I'm assuming that my computer would not recognize the format.

have you installed any cios's using a wad manager?
if so which ones?

Whoops... my bad. In my haste to get this typed (was on my way out the door) I forgot about including more specifics. So sorry about that.

Here is what I did in this order:

1. Homebrew channel was already installed previously by me via Bootmii before I got my external drive
2. Got ahold of Wad Mager 1.4
3. Also got CMDVDX34, WMIOS35
4. Downgraded my IOS and installed IOS35wad
5. Installed CIOSv7wad
6. Installed CIOS38_rev13 (over the net installation)
7. Installed USB Loader GX
8. Used WBFS manager to format my drive. It is partitoned with the first section being primary and the second being Fat32 and logical.
9. My Wii came to me second hand (via pawn shop) and was already upgraded to system 4.0 After the above changes, the Homebrew channel shows the following:

Network Not initialized 1.03 (I have Wii Connect 24 turned off if that's what that is referring to)
IOS61 v19.26

When something doesn't work right, I imidiately begin thinking it was something I did or didn't do, versus a hardware issue. I'm pretty sure I did all of the above in that order... but with it not working like it should, I could have skipped a necessary step and just thought I had done it. Though my thinking (could be warped thinking though) is that had I skipped a step I would not have gotten as far as I did, as I don't recall getting any error messages or anything during the process.

When I use the USB Loader, it brings up the screen and shows the correct ammount of free space on the drive, so I assume that it is recognizing it... though I did not have to "tell" it to find the drive, or click a button that informs it I want to look on the USB port. It's just when I unlock USB Loader in settings and try to copy one of my discs, or I try to exit but then decide to hit the back button and stay in the program - I get a black screen with white text and numerals.

The Error message can be summed up as follows:

At the top it reads...{difficult to discern the first character in parenthesis, could be an O or an I I think}

Exception (O/ISI) Occurred!
lots of rows of numerals
Stack Dump:
row of numerals with --> between each set
Code Dump:
more numerals

Sorry for the novel, but I wanted to make sure I included all the info I could think of that might be helpful to discern what I did or did not do.

Thank you to Clockwork and anyone else who may give me the guidence/help needed to figure this out.
biggrin.gif

Edit:
So, I went back through and redid all my steps noted above, and nothing changed. However - on a whim, I decided to get the latest USB Gx program, as I was using an earlier build. Lo and behold... it worked fine!!! *knock on wood* Woohoo!! Thanks again Clockwork for looking at my problem!!!

I have 2 questions at the moment, sorry if it has already been asked.

Q: Which is the best USB Loader for the Wii, because I've seen a couple but I'm not sure which is the best.
USB loader GX has the best gui and most functions, configurable loader is the most stable

Q: I am also about to soft mod my Wii with the 4.0 virgin softmod and USB guide, is that safe?
you can also use the offline part of the ultimate sys menu 4.0 guide found here: http://gbatemp.net/index.php?showtopic=144835. It is safe unless you have a LU64+ Wii

If you want good compatibility you need an enclosure and HDD that have no problems with the loader.

So in preparing the drive, I believe I would have to make three partitions. One for the games, one for images, and one for the movies. Do all three have to be in fat 32? Or can I make the movie partition in ntfs? Also do I put the games on after reformatting the game partition to wfbs? And how would I do that? Not sure, but I think the first partition has to be the one for the movies. It has to be FAT
Then you can make a small partition for the images and other stuff the usb loader needs. Also FAT
The last one is for games. WBFS managers can format both FAT and NTFS to WBFS, ubs loaders prefer FAT.
All partitions must be Primary partitions!

note: if the movies partition is not to use with the wii, make it the last partition.

My Wii begins with a LAH103 and is on firmware 4.0E, so it should work, shouldn't it?

And would USB Loader GX be the most compatible loader in terms of most games?

yes it should work. Forgot that you can use the online part of the guide too btw. (if you're going to use it)

No real idea of what one has the best compatibility. But GX has many options to load games, so big chance it has the right option to run the game.

I burnt a backup of super mario galaxy onto a dvd-r disc. I am on wii 3.2e, when I go to backup launcher 0.3 gamma and go to launch game I get an error saying - "no dvd (n)". Why is this happening, have I done something wrong here? I used imgburn to burn the game.
Help appreciated, thanks in advance.

I'm sure this has been asked a million times but...

I've formatted a USB drive for use in the USB loader. I can rip games onto it from discs and play them, that works fine. My understanding, though, was that there was a way for me to add .iso files from my computer to the drive without having to burn a disc. I can't access the drive on my computer without reformatting it for my computer. Is there some setup of partitions I can use or some format that will allow access by both the computer and the Wii, or does everyone using this software just rip the games before playing them?

With this game, I am using the Backup Launcher Gamma 002fix with IOS249 and working with mostly all cIOS files I've tried (9-13a/b; currently using cIOS rev.13a).

I was starting to have problems with Tiger Woods PGA Tour 2010 with the white screen freezing, until I patched my game with the IOS Patcher to IOS249. Once I did that I thought I was fine and everything, able to create save data and loading stuff from the menu. Everything went well up until I started my swings. My game continues to crash on swings during Free Play and Career mode. I've tried switching cIOS to see if the game would work but continues to freeze while I play. Sometimes, I can get a few swings in. The farthest I ever gotten so far was up to Hole 5 during Free Play (Hole 2 in Career). I don't know what I'm doing wrong, but if anyone does know I would greatly appreciate some help.

The only thing I can think is you don't have the latest cIOS installed. Try locating cIOS38 rev 13a somewhere, it's the latest version, and install it. Very easy.

Hi, this is kind of urgent as I've been kind of out of the loop for a while. But here is my problem.

I'm currently running FW 3.4 and I have USB Loader GX 1.0 running through the HBC. The problem is, when I tried to use the current rev of this loader I encounter a lot of problems. One for example is, it doesnt detect my HDD and I'm presented with a choice of booting it with cIOS 249 and cIOS 222. Neither will work. Sometimes the loader detects my drive and then freezes and then proceeds to crash on me.

I am also running Wan's cIOS 13b. But how do I fix this problem? Am I missing any IOS files? With the 1.0 loader that I currently have, the latest (the newest) game that I can load is Punch-Out. I haven't tried any newer games.

Any help is greatly appreciated! Thanks!!

Okay, I installed my no more heroes to my USB external hard drive. I ran it with USB Loader GX. it works but after a while it suddenly stops working (aka freezing).

when this happens, I notice that my USB's LED activity suddenly stops blinking. Is this because of spin down? or something else? Because I can still hear my Hard drive spinning it's just not being read...

Specs:
LU64 with 4.0 firmware
-LU64fix installed
-HBC
-hackmii /w bootmii.

Edit: I tried my wii fit (the running thing) let it for about 3 minutes and then went to the menu. it crashed after wards...
I think my hard drive stops reading the iso after 4 minutes. Is there a way to fix this?...
It's an enclosure... inside is a barracuda 7200.7 160HD... I didn't see anything about it in seagate.

it could be because your hdd has an auto-power save, im not sure how to get around it, but i have heard this problem before and it usually because the hdd goes to sleep after three minutes of not being accessed.

Serious question here (compatibility concern): Which is better Backup Launcher 0.3 Gamma or Backup Launcher 0.3 NeoGamma R6? COD 3 still doesn't work for me.

Another question:

When burning a back up of a game, is it better to use (if you can) 1x, 2x, 2.4x, or 4x? The guide in this site said to use half of the speed of the DVD... and my dvd goes from 1-16x does that mean I can use 8x?

Try burning slower than max, but not TOO slow. So yeah, try staying in the middle or a little above it.

the hard drive I am using only works if I turn it on while the loader is searching for the device. If it is on before that it won't detect it. If I get an external hard drive that is compatible (based on other peoples' postings), will I still have quirky things like this or can I just leave the hdd powered on all the time and it will automatically be detected?

Well I dont think its the HD, I have a Barracuda 7200.7 80GB Model#ST380011A That is working perfectly in a iMicro SATA / IDE combo enclosure. I have 2 other Western Digital Drives 80 GB/ 60 GB that have the exact same problem as you describe ....

There are a couple Windows apps to do this.. I have only tried WBFS Manager 3.0. And It works great for me..

After ripping games to HD, connect the HD via USB to the Computer and start the WBFS Manager to either extract the ISO's from the HD or Put them on the HD from the Computer.. SLICK !

Here the website... http://wbfsmanager.codeplex.com/

I've got a Wii (3.1E) with a Wasabi mod chip, it's been collecting dust for a roughly half a year, but I thought I should give Boom Blox Bash Party a try. But when I try to run the backed-up game it won't load the disc. The .iso file has (compresed) in the name, what does that mean and what shall I do to get the backup running?
