i'm curious about the ipod/google maps news. i wonder if the problem with the rangerds is not a google maps security issue but that the gps is not accurate. i played around with a local map (just a few streets away from my house) and a larger map (most of the area around my house). it was always off by a few streets and could never tell me where i actually was. like i sad in the hands-on, the dev for the rangerds software said this is the way google maps are made. that the maps are designed so that the gps cord. do not match 100% exactly... a "security" feature.

@DjoeN: have you tried the beta software yet? i'm curious if you get the same results as i do. if a map saved with GMDL shows accurate positons for you? i have not found another person yet with a working kit who was willing to run some tests =P. if you need the beta software let me know and i'll up it for you. i'd love to hear your take on how accurate the gps is for you.

yea, i was too getting annoyed by the DSi questions over this, glad you pretty much re-said it again (With photos! xD).

When I used google Maps myself, I was given a pretty much exact spot on my home, except by a few houses (Not across the street, just a few doors down), so maybe its less then a few meters of difference for the Google Maps? Or maybe its some query problem that Google has, and never can actually handle direct movements, I suppose. Or maybe its the area? Is your area a high-electro-magnetic area (A lot of power stations or stuff to that effect.), because that tends to be screwe up most maps and such.

Why the heck does the DSI version look so small, and the regular DS version look like a huge brick?

Maybe becuase Dsi has more ram? iono thats just a guess lol becuase thats why nds cant play gba games with just a slot1 cart lol (:

This may be not very usefull but i think it can expand to more things like kinda like getting a tower for a computer lol its just a tower now you gotta add the screen and speakers lol (: Woop

As neat as this project is (and it is very neat), I find it kind of pointless. It is attempting to fix a problem that doesn't exist. You can buy a car GPS for only a few dollars more than the cost of what they will have to sell this kit for. And it wouldn't be as clunky to use as this with plugin-packs and external antennas. Better accuracy and the interface would be better. I just can't see the commercial value in this. Neat project, but not commercially feasible.

Wonder if it will support waypoints for geocaching!

That's what I was wondering myself. If not directly through the developers software, someone would be able to make a homebrew that utilizes the gps hardware. A full geocaching app would be amazing, something maybe modeled after the iphone app? This would definitely get me to buy the hardware.

does anyone know of google maps on the iphone are accurate? does the iphone also show you as being up to 1 mile off your current position? as for the dsi, as i stated in the hands-on review, there is a dsi version prototype. everything is internal, which means no extension cable. i didn't get one with the review kit, so i can't tell you all if it works or not.

the iphone 3G was accurate by 10 meters, the 3GS is around 1 meter pinpoint.

GPS with mapping from google will only be effective if you have some internet connection surely - and when you're using GPS no doubt you'll be travelling so this is impossible.

This means it'll either need to download all the maps before you use it, or connect to the internet by something other than WiFi.

As much fun as the project is, unless it's going to get downloadable maps or incorporate BT to pair to a GPRS/3G mobile phone for downloading of maps on the fly, I don't really see the point apart from "let's see if we can do it"

Aloha !

Yes yes, this is an dinosuar-old-topic but I recently aquierd one of these Ranger GPS-thingies
and altough it works on my PC, I would like to get it working on my NDS as well.
But.... all the links I have found so far (even from the supporting software like mapThis! ) are dead.

Does someone know where I could get the software to make this miracle work ?

Welp, Another World and Jecepede are the only two people I know for sure have the hardware of this weird accessory, and I'd like to ask both of you how/where you got it. I found the original main website was dsgis net, and not ds-gps com which is what almost everyone said. On the last surviving snapshot on the wayback machine (Aug 2009, later than the newest post from here), there are a few posts/updates from early 2009, on how early versions of the hardware were sent to people who were interested, some type of prototype.

This seems to be how Another World got it, but almost any useful info (images of the thing, the software forum, contacts) weren't properly archived and I still have almost no idea on how it even worked (what it looked like while in use).

Jecepede got the hardware recently (no idea how) and talked about it on another forum (navitotal com). They also asked for the software, and in case you see it here earlier, here is the download: gamebrew. org/ wiki/ RangerDS#google_vignett (had to put spaces because new account)

Anyways, some time after August 2009, every official website was taken down and the RangerDS never saw a release. Again, I couldn't find any info on why this happened, and nobody really talked about this thing since. I'd really like to know what happened, if anyone in this thread (specially Another World) can tell me any info, please do.
