When do you brush your teeth...

My GF and I are having a discussion. She always brushes her teeth when waking up before eating anything. She says this is normal in her home country of China. I always brush after a meal, usually after breakfast and after any late-night snacks before bed. I hate the altered taste of eating\drinking after brushing... she says it's completely normal to her. Anyone else brush before a meal?

Well I brush late at night after all meals, but in the morning I do brush before eating breakfast, so both.

Same here. When I wake up, I first take a shower. When I'm in the bathroom, I find it convenient to brush my teeth as well. After that I go downstairs and have my breakfast.

I used to brush my teeth after I had eaten, because my mom used to tell me that it was better for your teeth that way. But a while ago, the dentist told me that brushing your teeth before having breakfast is actually much healthier

I do after eating. it help clean the mouth from food still here, and plus it make the mouth have good smell and not smell cofee or anything else. I'm working with lot of people, I have to not smell anything bad.
and before bed, after eating too then.

I really don't understand the meaning of brushing before eating, brushing is for cleaning food and sugar.
cleaning after waking up is like cleaning for nothing, it was already cleaned before bed. they didn't dirt automatically at night.

Though, I understand people doing it after waking up if they don't take breakfast, it is better for smell and having a fresh mouth for the day.

According to my dentist (

) brushing your teeth is primarily for protection. If you think of it that way, brushing teeth before eating makes sense. Also, if you first eat, your teeth are attacked, and brushing them only damages them more.

I brush my teeth 3 - 4 times a day...

Also, if you ever vomit, never brush your teeth right after vomitting... Wait 2 - 3 hours after vomitting to brush your teeth.

The reason you don't want to brush is because the acid in your vomit softens the enamel and you are brushing away some of your enamel if you brush right away... Just rinse with water and wait a few hours for your enamel to harden up again.

Man we are the same. My GF (also chinese) does the same thing lol.

in my mind i don't do it because i think the brushing will be less effective.
better to brush after you eat so you're also brushing off all the crap left from your meal.

also looking at the state of her teeth... the proof is in the pudding (but i doubt it's just down to this, could be bad genes etc)

still, i guess it's better than not brushing at all.
