The size (1500 * 1024 * 1024) is 1572864000, or 1.5GB. If it is decreased, and more parts "else if"s added, it could be made to write to say a 1GB SD. The only part I don't really get is the whole offset thing.

Its because the value of the real offset is divided by 4 to give the value passed to the I/O function.

If you take the 1.5 gig, divide by 4 and then convert to hex you get the 0x177.... value.

Reason for the file size limit is because of the max file size on a fat formatted SD card.

Code itself comes down for

Open DVD
Create file on sd card

set cluster start and count of clusters

for each cluster in the block to copy
--read cluster from DVD
--write cluster as part of the file to SD
next cluster

The hacked IOS has the limit removed on the WDVD_LowUnencryptedRead function apparently.

This file needs to be removed from GBATemp. This is just like adding an injected VC game. While it may ot be the exact same as the one Nintendo released it does however use copyrighted source materials.

As a slight aside - you'll probably find wii brick blocker to have the same problem as it contains a complete Nintendo partition of older updates.

It's not like I downloaded it and was like "Oh look, a hacked IOS. Let me install this since I have no idea what it is!!!". I read the instructions and followed them since I wanted to test the speed of this. It's not like the readme said "Btw, it's a hacked IOS so don't install it". It didn't even click in my little brain that it was a hacked IOS until after the fact. So while it's really easy to call us idiots and act all cool since you didn't install it, please stop it. It's simply not cool.

alright,
it's just awesome! Don't bitch Nitrotux because he just released this tool! I don't care if it's not it's job because the author have to make this public if he want before nitrotux.
It's very poor to learn that it exist modified IOS. It's very important for the wii scene but it's totally top-secret! Very very possibilities with patched IOS!
And what about a way to dump wii game ? If Nitrotux don't publish this tool we never have access to this!

how many people will use this tool now? or understand that they can access to the wi drive now? what about a virtual modchip?

it's bad because it is piracy? so the homebrewer don't release it and just keep that for them?

I'm very tired to realize that the wii scene is just a little club!

...and thx to Nitrotux

@Tijo....

So let me get this straight.... you're defending this guy?

After releasing something that clearly isn't his and taking all the credit for it? He provides no insight to having any knowledge about something he supposedly made, and you don't see what's wrong with this?

Not to mention, as I illustrated, the tool might not even work properly. I have yet to hear back from anyone who burned a disc from these dumps.

You don't understand me, it's not about Nitrotux, it's about the fact that we don't have access to the entire knowledge about the wii. Just some elite people choose to release or not information.
The question is where is the real author? For what reason he's stilling hidden? and for what reason YOU Teq care about that? I think the real author is an adult who can protect his work himself if he want to. And i think he can easily proven that it's his work when he comes in this kind of forum to explain to everyone how he make this!

If he doesn't do that, so i'm keep thinking that Nitrotux provide us a great tool which can be use for a lot of useful homebrew.

The author isn't hidden.

The majority of the tool is the DVD API, which is open source and has been available for a long time now. The problem, though, is that using the DVD API serves no purpose when the only discs that can be read by the Wii's drive are retail discs.

Using the drive as a disc dumper is nothing new -- there are tools that use USB Gecko and a serial connection to the Wii.

However, the problem has always been that DVDLowUnencryptedRead was byte limited. Releasing an IOS that unlocks an unlimited LowUnencryptedRead was the key to it all.

The people who hacked this IOS are on #WiiDev @ Efnet... and nitrotux somehow got ahold of it.

i know all of that.

So the famous author on #Wiidev @ Efnet can just release a full way to dump a wii game to an .iso and everybody will be happy!

if you want to know what tools are used in the Nitrotux package just open the source.
The name of the creator of the API is here.

Of course about the IOS modification it's another story because nobody will explain in public how to modify an IOS because of Iso loader, virtual modchip, break the trucha limitation on 3.3...

I will break this discussion because i'm not and i will never be useful for the wii community.

So what the hell is your problem, teq? If he modified the IOS himself and then released a program he edited, how is it not his work? Nearly everything the guys in #wiidev and any other people release to the Wii scene contains copywritten material that's just straight up stolen from Nintendo, and do they give credit? No. So fuck you and your high horse. We're all in the business to steal, one way or another. Nitrotux released something that no one else has done, so he gets credit.

EDIT: teq, don't answer that question. I can't fucking stand to here you drone on and on about stupid shit. You're always complaining and worrying about what everyone else does. I'm adding you to my ignore list.

Name one example for a #wiidev developer using or spreading copyrighted material, or immediately stop spreading such slander. The #wiidev developers explicitly make it a point and go to great lengths not to steal from anyone.

QUOTEWe're all in the business to steal, one way or another.
And make it a habit not to say "we" if you mean "I".

Well, now that this moron got his crybaby act out of the way... I'll continue:

The IOS included has all of 4 bytes changed. It's actually IOS21, and the 4 bytes are probably the Title ID. I'm getting another version of IOS21 to compare against.

In any case, it's clear now that this isn't his work. Since it installs a system WAD, it's a potential hazard that nitrotux wouldn't know how to fix.
So, not only does he not know what he's talking about, but he's released software that is potentially hazardous and definitely illegal.

Oh... and don't compare this to VC/WiiWare wads, as none of those are allowed on this forum, either.

EDIT: Thanks for the backup, denzil. Bobitos just has a vendetta against me, but he doesn't know what he's talking about.

This guy advanced the scene. He is fine. "stealing" open source material ? Seriously

This guy didn't advance anything. He took someone else's work(that happened to use an open source API) and claimed it to be his own. The WAD, however, is not open source.

Giving him credit is not the appropriate action, here.

once for all, there is no "scene conspiracy" or great minds hidding informations to you, all the informations are available to anyone not too lazy to read them... the IOS is written in ARM asm, so I guessanybody could modify the code and repack it .

don't you understand that usually, SERIOUS people do a LOT of betatesting before releasing stuff that might harm your console and let you be able to use it ? do you believe that this guy have the knowledge of testing the modified IOS (if he is even the one who patched it) ? I don't...
do you realize that IOS patching is something known and already done for some time by the wii hackers but is still considered TOO DANGEROUS to be publically spreaded into a simple WAD file ? Bushing has stated many time that we first need a way of brick recovering before going into this crap.

you can always come here and claim that this is peanuts and that the most important is the final result (i.e what YOU can do), but at least, understand that people feel concerned about this lame way of releasing poorly tested and potentially dangerous tools, only to enter the "wii hacker" hall of fame or to be the first of releasing a long awaited application, without even thinking about possible side effects!

PS:
there is this function call at initialization

QUOTEIOS_ReloadIOS(5);

just curious, do someone know what will happen if the so called IOS5 does not exist ?

What happens when you try to play a brickblocked game like MP3, SMG, SSBB? Black screen.
The game requests an IOS that doesn't exist (because you removed the update partition)

Why does always somebody come up and accuse #wiidev of withholding information/source code?
That is what bugs me most about this communtiy: There are so much ignorant fools that think every tiny
bit of information should be fed to them personally or be postet in the one corner of the internet where
they check from time to time. Even if that piece of information is of absolutely no use to the "end user".

I am (like teq) still waiting for the first confirmed successful dump using this tool. (NO chance I am going to install that IOS.)
I am (like teq) still waiting for nitrotux to explain his hacked IOS. (Or admit where he got it from)
(See teq I told you I usally agree with you

He still wrote the dump tool. The DVD API is trivial. All of that stuff was documented.

Hacking IOS is NOT trivial, however, this isn't that much of a change. It does require an amount of reverse engineering skills, though.

I know nothing about nitrotux. His coding skills (For his dumper) seem fairly poor, but it's not necessary to be a "good" coder to understand assembly.

I mean, hell, I taught myself how to disassemble the IOS data after I saw this released. It took less than an hour to get myself set up with everything I'd need to make the changes he made. I originally said that he couldn't have done this himself, but now that I've tried it myself, I'm changing my judgment.

If you could send me the IOS21 you compared it against, I would appreciate it.

I don't have the patience to rip it from an ISO I'd have to download.

So how does this IOS have the necessary changes to allow drive access? I'd like to hear of a confirmed dump as well.

teq, i was a bitch to you before, and im sorry. you are always good at finding somthing odd about a coder claiming to make somthing, or bitching about someone who made a thread that was pointless (like what i did sometimes) and thats pretty sweet.

Btw, nitrotux, you can go shove a railroad spike up your ass.
