Sony sells off dozens of VR and AR patents to Meta

Meta Reality Labs, the division behind the successful Quest lineup has apparently picked up a batch of patents from Sony covering VR and XR headsets.

A transfer of 43 US patent properties took place between June and September 2026 covering virtual, augmented and mixed reality headset tech that Sony filed between 2010 and 2022.

Neither Sony nor Meta has commented. But the PSVR2 has been widely regarded as forgotton by PlayStation and it seems quite clear that they are scaling back their VR ambitions even further now.

The PSVR 2, which launched in February 2023 at $550 USD has been generally considered poorly supported by fans, receiving less than a handful of first-party exclusive titles. Sony did start selling a PC VR adapter that lets PSVR 2 owners play SteamVR games on a VR-ready PC to offer them a little more value out of the headset.

Did you purchase a PSVR2? Did you have fun with it? Or do you think VR in gaming is dying off?

Ever since I side loaded Citra VR and Mario Kart7 onto the Quest Pro, I was sold. Yeah it was a little buggy, but its a great proof of concept on how Mario Kart could easily be tweaked to support VR. Its actually supported on the Switch, but the cardboard Labo VR kit is a joke.

VR in gaming is far from dying off. I have a Quest 3, and the VR-related projects I have seen in the past two years have been nothing short of amazing. And while there are a decent amount of games, both PCVR and standalone on the Quest, a lot of my favorites are open source projects.

Team Beef has ported a variety of older PC games, including from the Half-Life, DOOM, and Quake series. Flat2VR has also ported a wide variety of games. And there's an injection tool out, called UEVR, that lets you play many, if not most, Unreal Engine 4 and 5 games in VR.

These recent decomp and recompilation projects such as sm64coopdx, Ship of Harkinian, and SpaghettiKart have resulted in many more games being ported to VR. That's right, you can play N64 games like Mario Kart 64 and Star Fox 64 in VR now! And that Pokemon Voxel mod? DramaticShape? Also playable in VR! And most of these ports allow you to freely switch between third person and first person view. I've also played ports of Animal Crossing for the GameCube, as well as Mario Kart Wii and the Retro Rewind mod.

Also mods for playing Halo, Doom Eternal, and Titanfall 2 in VR. It's a wonderful time to own a VR headset!

is it a bit heavy? do you have one of those wires mounted on the ceiling to take the weight off?
It's not too heavy imo, the main complaint was how the way it clamps means it grabs onto the hair rather than the head so it kinda can shift a bit, which ain't great, but I got the Globular Cluster comfort mod and that changes it massively, it clamps properly now and actually has a top strap to help support it. Otherwise, it works great, I used to run a 7900XT and that didn't even need an adapter, USB-C on the headset straight onto it, now on a 5080, but one of those Aliexpress PSVR2 adapters was much cheaper and easier to find in stock than the official one.

Unironically one of the better PCVR headsets.
One of the few modern ones that use straight DisplayPort anymore, isn't it? Not that the others are *bad*, but I figured hey, doesn't get any lower latency than that
