Mario Kart 8 Deluxe gets free Switch 2 update, adds eight-player multiplayer, higher resolution visuals, camera support, and more

After more than a year, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe has gotten a fresh update with a focus on the Switch 2, and it's surprisingly meaty. For those Switch 2 players, they'll be looking at higher resolution output on both the TV and Switch 2 display, shorter loading times, support for up to eight players in local multiplayer, and even support for USB cameras when playing online. It's worth noting that camera support is limited to GameChat though.

On top of this, all owners of the game can also enjoy a small tweak to the speed increase you get for collecting a coin, a tweak to Boo that will remove slow-downs while active, and most notably, a full 96 race VS Mode, allowing for a functional All Cup Tour for those who own the DLC.

Changes List said:

Support for the Nintendo Switch 2 system

  • Added support for the Nintendo Switch 2 display and high-resolution TVs, allowing for clearer visuals.
  • Shortened the loading time before races and battles begin.
  • Added support for 5–8 players in Multiplayer.
    • You can connect up to seven Nintendo Switch controllers (Joy-Con or Nintendo Switch Pro Controllers) to the Nintendo Switch 2 system. In order to play with eight people, you need at least one Joy-Con 2 controller or a Nintendo Switch 2 Pro Controller.
  • Added CameraPlay support.
    • A USB camera (sold separately) is required to use CameraPlay.
    • Players can turn camera ON or OFF in Multiplayer (2-4 players) and Online Play modes.
    • In order to use a camera on the internet, players must participate in a GameChat session. The camera footage and microphone audio will be sent only to GameChat members.
    • When the camera is ON, the player’s face is displayed during the race.

General

  • Increased player speed during races by the equivalent of one coin.
  • Players will not slow down while using Boo to become invisible, even when entering an offroad area.
  • Players with access to the Mario Kart 8 Deluxe – Booster Course Pass will have “96 Races” added to the “VS Race” rule settings.

The update is live now for both the Switch 1 and Switch 2.

So the Switch 1 updates actually adds any improvements for Switch 1 (old console) or absolutely not?.. Like 8 players, for example...

Eight player is Switch 2 only. All the Switch 1 applicable stuff is in the second paragraph. I also just popped in the actual changelog to make it a bit clearer.

Really cool they'd do this for 8D when they could've easily abandoned it in favor of World. Anecdotally most people I know who've tried both, still prefer to play 8D.
World would be better in every way if Nintendo just gave up on forcing people to play the connecting tracks. Guess they'd rather have every lobby filled with two-thirds bots though.

I knew they'd end up making a Switch 2 Update for MK8D after all, meanwhile MKW has a very long way to become half as good as Mario Kart 8 is. I love MK8D.

Glad I own the cartridge with all the DLC so no need to buy from the eShop.

It really wouldn't though... 200cc is missing, the Battle Mode is lacking, and 24 players online is just not fun in a an already chaotic enough game.

Pretty cool update, here's hoping they give Smash the same treatment.

Does that mean that MK World "flopped"? Ninty?
It was never better than MK8D. But then again they also don't care.
They could have added 200 ccm, more tracks, drivers, removed the lame connecting roads between races and so on.
Only thing that's really fun is the K.O. mode. Love that.

However MK8D is still the GOAT, especially with CTGP-Deluxe.

@Scarlet I'd put a screenshot in the post showing local multiplayer with 8 players. :)

This feels like a very "Holy shit! Two cakes!" moment for me. On the one hand, World's mechanical improvements are a lot of fun, but the general consensus seems to be that it needs a bit of fine tuning here and there. On the other, 8DX is still the same fundamentally the same game that came with my Wii U set, but that familiarity and enduring relevance has really started to push it up into timeless territory, sort of like Mario Kart Wii. Hell, I got nostalgic for 8 around a week ago while thinking about playing it as a teenager and through college.

My point is that I think there's room for both of these games to coexist, and I'm glad to see that the dev team shares that sentiment. I don't necessarily see Wii stepping down as the "Melee of Mario Kart" anytime soon, but I think there's plenty of space for each entry in the series to bring its own quirks to the table. Taking full advantage of hardware upgrades as they arrive is a great way to support that.
