Sony is moving away from physical discs, will soon only release PlayStation games digitally

Sony made a shocking announcement today, revealing that the company plans to move away from physical game releases in the future. Citing claims of how the industry is moving away from physical copies and disc-based games, and prefers digital media, PlayStation will follow suit, and will only release PlayStation games digitally. Starting January 2028, physical disc production will end, and you'll only be able to purchase video games through a digital format, either from retailers or PlayStation themselves.

According to the most recent financial report from Sony, only 3% of PlayStation's annual sales came from physical software releases, with projections for that already low number set to fall even further through the end of the PlayStation 5's lifecycle.

As consumer preferences and the broader entertainment industry continue to shift away from physical discs to digital, physical game disc production for all new games releasing on PlayStation consoles will be discontinued starting January 2028. Following this date, new games will be available on PlayStation Store and at retailers in digital formats only. This transition has no impact on games that already released, or will be releasing, prior to January 2028 in disc format.

This is a natural direction for Sony Interactive Entertainment to adapt to consumer trends as the general preference for digital media significantly outpaces physical discs. This transition will enable us to align more closely with how most of our community prefers to access and play games today.

You do realize that CEOs regularly sell large shares of stock, right? I'm old enough to remember when stories like these made the rounds during MSFT's antitrust investigations in the 1990s, and reps for MSFT had to point out that Bill Gates regularly sold stock every quarter. Means nothing.

Also, some 250,000 Sony fans have "signed" the pointless Change.org petition. That means only 94,890,000 PS5 owners cannot be bothered because they don't care about physical media.

Let those figures sink in before claiming that there is a huge outrage over this announcement. You people are in an echo chamber experiencing a false consensus effect.

If the economy was better then this wouldnt have happened.
You're not wrong, but it's several steps beyond that too. If we had more consumer protections in the US, this wouldn't have happened. If we had a president that wasn't a greedy obese moron with late-stage dementia, this wouldn't have happened.

I don’t have a PS5 but I guess not many of you bought the disc trays add on huh? so much for supporting physical game

only have yourself to blame

my point is they will never axed physical media if its their majority of profit, but they decide to axed it, so you do the math

to the guy above me saying “this would never happened” with a “better economy”, did you know all physical game already disappeared on PC? find me a physical disc of PC Expedition 33

blockbuster goes bankrupt, netflix steamrolled movie theater, laptop doesnt ship with disc drive anymore and there’s no more physical pc game, and yet some people are still coping this will never happened to console 😂😂😂, but oh yeah blame all of that to donald fucking trump, jeez

In fairness, he is to blame for almost everything else wrong in the world. I mean even you wouldn't deny that; only a fascist, Nazi-saluting fool like Elon Musk would.

Physical games still outsell digital for a bunch of releases according to the Insomniac leak, but Sony has to subsidize the PS6 somehow in this shitty economy.

uhh okay? how does mentioning nazi and elon musk added anything to this discussion thread? this is why I rarely open gbatemp anymore

anyway forget that, getting back to the topic I just want to say for those still stuck on Sony’s walled garden, you guys should come here to the PC community. While yes PC is the same with the digital only thing, at least we have DRM free GOG, Cracked game which is a godsend for game preservation, every emulator on earth, and also MODSSSS 😎😎😎

That’s exactly what I’m going to do thank you for the advice should I build my pc or buy a new one?

At this point, aren't physical games for the PlayStation just proof essentially you own the game? Since the games nowadays get loaded with patches, it probably doesn't load much from the disc

That R'ed POS IS to blame for most of the problems.

Nah, plenty of games are playable with the base game.

🏴‍☠️I sail the seas with Captain Fitgirl🏴‍☠️ without regret nor idiotic justifications like "If buying isn't owning, then Piracy isn't stealing" or "corporations are greedy." Grow up and steal like a man. It's not "preservation" and it's not justified. It's free. Just like me in the land of neofascism on its birthday.
Justified in many cases, like end of life when you can't buy new games (like what's happening to the PS3 and Vita next year). But you'd have to be able to see nuance, which I don't think some snarky turd whose about as clever as a bad Adam Sandler movie is capable of doing.

If the economy was better, Sony would've still tried to find an excuse to do this anyway. In case you forgot, they already tried once before some time ago, but reversed their decision when they received enough backlash over it. The current state of things just gives enough scapegoats and distractions their fanboys can (ab)use that Sony can move forward without risking another huge backlash.

Besides, the pirates would've grabbed everything they wanted to by now, so Sony won't have to fear pushback from "preservationists", either.

Just to remind everyone blaming the current president, it was during the previous presidential term (2021-2024) that Sony first attempted to shut down the PS3/Vita stores. In the long run, they don't give a crap about who's in charge (unless whoever's in charge directly conflicts with Sony CEOs' and shareholders' goals). It just so happens that the circumstances of the current year provide ideal conditions for them to move on with their plans at low risk, due to all the scapegoats they can use (such as our current president, who clearly didn't have to wait long to take 90+% of the blame for Sony's own actions).

Not sure what nazis and elon have to do with Sony being a bunch of assholes who already tried this move once during a Blue Jersey's campaign.

Just so you know going forward, it is literally impossible for someone who uses the toddler term "turd" to actually insult me. And no, I don't expect you to understand that statement; it's for everyone else to collectively laugh in your general direction.

And no, there's no justification for theft. Those games are still protected IP and could be released in future collections of old games for new platforms. Even if they weren't, that doesn't justify stealing them. Just grow the hell up and 🏴‍☠️embrace your inner preservationist thief.🏴‍☠️

No one said that they did, so obviously you can't follow the thread and I cannot be bothered to explain it to you.
