Sony is moving away from physical discs, will soon only release PlayStation games digitally

Sony made a shocking announcement today, revealing that the company plans to move away from physical game releases in the future. Citing claims of how the industry is moving away from physical copies and disc-based games, and prefers digital media, PlayStation will follow suit, and will only release PlayStation games digitally. Starting January 2028, physical disc production will end, and you'll only be able to purchase video games through a digital format, either from retailers or PlayStation themselves.

According to the most recent financial report from Sony, only 3% of PlayStation's annual sales came from physical software releases, with projections for that already low number set to fall even further through the end of the PlayStation 5's lifecycle.

As consumer preferences and the broader entertainment industry continue to shift away from physical discs to digital, physical game disc production for all new games releasing on PlayStation consoles will be discontinued starting January 2028. Following this date, new games will be available on PlayStation Store and at retailers in digital formats only. This transition has no impact on games that already released, or will be releasing, prior to January 2028 in disc format.

This is a natural direction for Sony Interactive Entertainment to adapt to consumer trends as the general preference for digital media significantly outpaces physical discs. This transition will enable us to align more closely with how most of our community prefers to access and play games today.

1. Read the release again. "3% of PlayStation's annual sales." That includes all things PlayStation.
2. The company would not lie about that because they could be sued by their shareholders if they intentionally mislead investors with such statements. So you can assume it is 100% accurate. Plus there is literally no reason for them to lie. If 97% were physical sales, you think they'd still get rid of physical? Please!
Read my comment again. I say one word changed from a quote changes everything.

Were well due to have games over the 100gb mark.
Fucking call of duty already wants 300GB per game, while reusing the very same doom 3 engine license since 2007. It's metric tons of bullshit.

Prepare for Gamestop to fully become a Pokemon and licensed goods toy store! (or just finally go out of business)
Those idiots should've been out of business 7 years ago, at least. How they're still operating defies sense.

We know its false and misleading. We also know why they want digital-only because they take a higher cut (30%) in their controlled environment where revenue is shared with the least number of parties. For physical their cut is much smaller usually half that amount (15%) in a form of royalty. But it's understandable for the publisher to also prefer digital because they get a higher cut as retailers get pushed out from the equation.

Sony will still have all the incentives to phase it out even on 50/50 between physical and digital.

The Switch 3 still allowing for physical media, I'd say it's feasible, but probably very unlikely; but I just can't picture a Switch 4 still having physical media.
I dunno, the storage has to come from somewhere. Carts don't have the read-speed issue discs have, and they have the same type of NAND storage, so the cost is the same.

The question is, do consumers want the storage on a cart or on an sd card, and where/when do they want the cost?

The reality is that consumers are very easily influenced, and if games on Switch 4 cost more than on PS8, we'll hear the same "carts are expensive" chants we've beard before. They are expensive, but they save money that would otherwise be spent on SD cards.

Consumers aren't going to think of this, and Nintendo will be pressured to make games look cheaper.

And there I have talked myself into agreeing with you.

2028? That's what 8 years of physical games for the PS5? I can't really complain about that. I had already decided not to get the PS6 a while ago so it's the perfect end for me. My wallet and I will be totally fine sticking with PC and Switch going forward.

You know, one of the biggest factors that gave consoles an identity, was the physical media. That point became even bigger when physical media died off for P.C.. Consoles offered experiences that even today, the average computer doesn't replicate completely, if at all.

When you went out to buy physical media, it wasn't about the hassles to obtain them, it was the excitement you got when you finally got the chance to hold and or purchase a copy for yourself. Hard day at work? You had a plan worth looking forward to, a plan to buy and play the game you wanted. Sure, you used more gas, but it was worth it. If you were a kid, 9/10 you wanted to hold and look at the contents inside of the case, otherwise, all you thought about was that game on the way home if you didn't get that chance. At some point you finally get the chance to purely focus on the game. You remove the plastic, maybe you get lucky and get a whiff of that new plastic smell. You open the packaging, now it's undeniable, you smell the new product. If you were old enough, you had manuals and extras to go through, otherwise, you see the shiny new cartridge or game disc ready whenever you were. You make your way to your system, pop the cartridge or disc in, and eagerly executed the software. The best part is, you not only got to do that with each game you physically owned, but you never had to worry about losing what you loved, as they sat there, waiting for your attention, for years to come. It was never about the money, it was always about the experiences in the moment that no amount of money could replace. All of the details in between that leads up to that singular purchase, small hassles and all, makes it worth appreciating and remembering even more. That is the true worth of physical media.

Oh i get the issues on both sides here. I'm just not gonna lie, the future being fully digital on the current gen consoles of the time is inevitable and we'd have to be in some major denial to believe the day will simply never come. Sony will be first here, but within 2 decades, if that, I guarantee Nintendo and Microsoft will sadly have followed suit.

the reason for physical media is if you don't like the game you can sell it off and get some of your money back. this is the main reason i pirate I've downloaded so many games i have hated or some only played a few minutes and thinking i am so glad i never wasted a cent on that trash! so go ahead stop all physical media on everything and watch piracy increase a hundredfold!

I suppose the counter-point might be that people tire of all-digital and there's a physical media revival across industries. Music albums, films, tv shows, magazines...

I wouldn't be surprised if it happens. I think the era of physical media was better.

But I also agree the all-digital future looks more likely as it aligns better with business interests, big and small.

Yeah, I think PlayStation is the only console system where the physical games aren't serialised. This might not be good for Sony as it does block physical-to-digital licenses.

Microsoft's proposed model is perfect too: The disc is always the primary license, and it alone can move the digital license to a new account. The opposite of how PC game discs worked.

And with that, the last of my old reasons for sticking with console over PC is gone (Nintendo still an exception for now at least).

Guess I'll stick with the PS5 and hope PC components come down towards something reasonable in 2-4 years, if they don't I guess I'll be done with any new games full stop.
