Nintendo announces price increases across the board, set to come into effect from September in western regions

After much speculation, Nintendo has finally followed their competitors in announcing price increases for their hardware.

You can find a breakdown of what's changing below:

Nintendo Switch 2
  • United States: $449.99 ➜ $499.99 (11% increase)
  • Canada: $629.99 ➜ $679.99 (7% increase)
  • Europe: €469.99 ➜ €499.99 (6% increase)
Nintendo Switch 2 Japanese-Language System
  • Japan: ¥49,980 ➜ ¥59,980 (20% increase)
Nintendo Switch OLED
  • Japan: ¥37,980 ➜ ¥47,980 (26% increase)
Nintendo Switch
  • Japan: ¥32,978 ➜ ¥43,980 (33% increase)
Nintendo Switch Lite
  • Japan: ¥21,978 ➜ ¥29,980 (36% increase)
Of note here is the fact that it's only the Switch 2 going up in price outside of Japan for the moment, with Nintendo's home turf getting hit harder both in the products that are affected and the amount they're going up. The price of Nintendo Switch Online will also be going up for Japanese users to better align with other regions, as well as the playing cards Nintendo continue to make and sell in the region.

These price changes will come into effect at different times based on both the region and the products in question. The Nintendo Switch 2 price increase for western regions is set to happen from the 1st of September, with the changes for the Japanese consoles and playing cards coming into play later this month. Japanese Nintendo Switch Online price increases will begin in July.

It should also be mentioned that this is likely not the last we've heard on the topic, with the press release mentioning price increases to follow for South Korean Nintendo Switch Online subscriptions, as well as price revisions for other regions not specifically touched on. You can find the full press release linked below.

Let's be honest though...we all have a backlog for life.
Even without adding piracy into the equation, I personally have quite a number of games in my backlog, and even a few from way back on the 3DS.

Hasn't it already sold like twice as much as the WiiU ever did?
Yep. What took Wii U its entire like, Switch 2 did in 7 months. Faster than Switch 1 at around 9 months.

The biggest surprise is that they gave us an almost 4 month heads up. Still not getting one.

Sucks, but was also something most people saw coming from a mile away. To Nintendo's credit, they held out the longest.
But realistically, they overcharged from the get-go, so holding out the longest on a further increase when you overpriced your console to start with doesn't seem that impressive.

I'm in my mid-30s and a software engineer. In theory should be in the right circles.
I'm also in my mid thirties and I work at an office. As I mentioned, a lot of people that I know do have one. It isn't nearly as unpopular or unsuccessful as you're making it seem, the price, while expensive, isn't that much of an issue for most people that do want one (compared to most of the stuff nowadays at least).

They definitely went cheap on the screen quality, but beyond that it was a decent price for a system that's slightly more powerful than the Steam Deck and in a smaller form factor. Nintendo being Nintendo, I don't think anybody expected them to take a loss on each unit.

That's horrible about price increase! Same apply to PS, Xbox, PC, etc.

Also AI companies are hurt hardware and drive prices up shoot far up. Blame on AI companies! That's why AI companies are hoard tons of hardware like CPU, RAM, GPU and storages (hard drives and SSD). AI and data center buildings need take down!

Soon people would have big plan to destroy power grid energy buildings to kill or stop to feed power to all AI companies and data center buildings in the near future.

Come on folks and knock off power to all AI and data center companies will learn big mistake lessons!

Let people blow up power grid energy buildings now then destroyed!

Please bring prices down back to normal! Or companies maybe will cease to stop producing hardwares to disasters. We don't care!

Every time I see people talking about RAM prices finally going down, I go over to look at the price charts on PCPartPicker and absolutely nothing has changed.
Places like that which probably have an unsold stockpile of experience ram probably won't lower prices until it sells.

I still feel the screen isn't taking advantage of overdrive purely from a power consumption standpoint. That is something a software update could fix, or at least allow via toggle. But as each day passes, I get closer to feeling that maybe it isn't like that at all.

We all knew this increase was coming, but it's still unfortunate. That said, I got a pretty good deal on Switch 2 + 256GB SD (it was practically free).

After the price increase I can't say it's worth it, there's just not enough games to make it worth owning unless you want a Switch Pro.

Nintendo raising the price actually helped me.
I can finally stop pretending I was ever going to buy it.

Well said. It may have had that effect on me as well. My recent "big" gaming purchases have all been retro-ish - - a N3DSLL, a PS Vita, and an Analogue 3d w/ SC64. I bought all those knowing each time that I was passing on getting a SW2, i.e. maybe later. I guess if N drops an OLED SW2 in a couple years, I'll revisit the proposition. For now, I'm set as-is.

People have been theorising this for a year now and it's not happened. So is it actually likely to happen? No

I don't understand the negativity either.

For the strength of its library, Switch 1 is plagued by performance issues. If Switch 2 offers respite, that's gotta be worthwhile no?
Depends on the player. Most people I know with a Switch 1 are more casual players who don't care about performance. Those who do care about it have either already upgraded to a Switch 2, modded their Switch 1, or jumped ship to PC.

One could say the same about VRR, except the dock has support for it as noted by people connecting their Steam Decks into it. To note, iirc, it took the PS5 and Steam Deck over a year to implement their forms of it, and PS5's conversion chip from DP to HDMI is practically the same as what's in the Switch 2's dock. There is still time, so long as the console exists.

Raising prices on a product they have already made millions of which is also just leftover stock at this point is for the stupid people to keep falling for it! But I digress you cant tell stupid anything!!!

So I guess it did kinda work in a way? idk, conistering Valve isn't making new Steam Decks and won't say anything about the Steam Machine, and Sony had at least 4 whole price hikes before this, not to mention Microsoft's own series of price hikes... maybe it did.

Valve literally stopped selling and makin g new Steam Deck 1s, as they likely would have to price increase too, but dont want to, so they just let it go out of stock for months now.

Only this price hike ( aside from Japan) isnt due till september, your leftover stock theory holds 0 ground.
