I recently tried to upgrade my Switch OLED battery to a bigger one, but when removing the old battery, it started smoking.... I might have applied too much force trying to pry it out. Is it safe to install a new battery now, or could that cause problems? The battery was disconnected from the board but I don't know if the heat which presumably caused the smoke could have damaged other components.

I also want to reuse this battery if possible, so how unsafe is that?

FFS don't reuse the battery, you must have got oxygen into it and it reacted with the lithuium. You're lucky it didn't set your house on fire, throw it away (not in your household bin). The new battery should be fine if you don't mess about with it and break it like you did to your other battery.

DO NOT REUSE THE DAMAGED BATTERY.

DISPOSE OF THE BATTERY IMMEDIATELY AND CORRECTLY.
This situation demands a warning the size of a dinosaur, love your approach xD
Short and to the point: get rid of that battery right now, dispose it in a place dedicated for that. Ask any public worker from your town if you don't know where to go. For your own and everyone else's safety.

For the love of all that is holy.

DO NOT REUSE THE DAMAGED BATTERY!!!

Old batteries are sometimes hard to remove.
Probably when prying out the battery, you damaged one or multiple layers, causing a short.

Good thing you disconnected the battery first.
The Switch battery is separated from the rest of the Switch by a thing layer of plastic so if you didn't burn a hole through that plastic, then your Switch will probably be fine with a new battery.

Along with the smoke, all magic from the old battery disappeared so just discard that one safely.
Put it in a bucket with water outside for several days.
Then the chances of catching it fire again will be smaller.

WTF, I guess you never took chemistry at school. Lithium should be stored in mineral oil. It reacts like crazy with water and goes into little balls that zip around like like mad and catch fire - this is very dangerous.
