Hello!

I am trying to build

the
ULTIMATE
WiiU!

I am looking for ideas. I am interested in narrowing down

  • The BEST hardware. What HDD is best? SD? Power solutions?
  • The BEST software. What's the most complete setup? I want to utilze all possible emulators, Homebrew..
  • The BEST Physical Mods. What is the best replacement battery? What is the best replacement housing? Can I improve the screen? Can i improve the gamepad range?
  • The BEST Accessories. What is the must have addons? Thinking of a tpu shell and some screen protectors. Charging stands

I am newish to WiiU but I'm reasonably well read on the subject and I'm looking to see what the great minds have to say.

I want all the bells and whistles. Atomic purple flashing blinking loud with all the games.

All of them.

I currently have a WD 2TB USB 3.0 elements with a y cable. For wiiu stuff and a 5 TB WD p10 gamedrive formated FAT32 in a single partition for the wii/gc stuff.

What do I need?

I appreciate anyone and everyones opinions and help!

The Wii Us internal memory should be Toshiba. Also get a LAN adapter.

https://wiiu.hacks.guide

Unlimit the USB Ports. There are some posts about this here on the forums as well as some images on Discord but I can't find them real quick.
If OP wanted too. Couldn’t he use voultars upcoming eMMC adapter to just make a giant internal storage with a 1tb microsd ?

If that’s the case that might be the best case to make an “ultimate Wii u” since you could internalize all storage

No. First off the max eMMC size the Wii U supports is 64 GB (I guess a 64 GB model was planned but never released) and second there's no known way to resize the properitary, encrypted filesystem.

//EDIT: And it seems (not confirmed yet) the filesystem and eMMC size must match. So even when you would copy a 32 GB NAND dump to a bigger size SD card and solder that in the Wii U will refuse to boot.

Toshiba? Okay. 64GB max? I wonder if my Wii LAN adapter will work.

Unlimiting the USB ports looks awesome. I ordered a powered USB Hub for the WiiU. I have been using one on the Switch for years. This looks better.

unlimited usb ports might be worthless. the wiiu can only use a second hdd if transferring. and, the vwii can use a large hdd if it's allocated to 4,096KBs, so most new ones, I think. every wii and cube game should fit on 8tbs, I think.

Toshiba seems to be the most reliable eMMC used in the Wii U. Hynix has often problems.
There are certain mlc sizes hardcoded in IOSU, the largest ist 64GB. But that doesn't matter as we can't resize the file system, we can only use the size the console came with.

There are 3 brands of eMMC Nintendo used: Hynix, Samsung and Toshiba. Now when we look at https://hackmd.io/d12Fq9g-QlCjN2HJp7Yvew?view we see Toshiba is the most reliable.

32 GB. In code the Wii U supports up to 64 GB but there is no such hardware. Note that this is about the internal memory (MLC/eMMC), SD cards and USB drives can be bigger.
I wonder if my Wii LAN adapter will work.
It will work as Wii and Wii U LAN adapters are exactly the same. ;)

Will search links later or tomorrow.

No. I'm using a HDD, LAN adapter, GameCube controller adapter (with rumble, connected through kind of a reversed Y cable) and TTL adapter all at the same time without a powered HUB (TTL adapter might be useless for the OP but they want to use a second HDD for vWii to be able to have as much games in parallel as possible).

Do we even need a HD for the vWii anymore? I though it is possible to just do VC injects for Wii games and launch them directly from the Wii U Menu.

yeah, but there's a 300 game limit. the only way around it is multiple hdds or system config tool.

@SylverReZ, atleast wiimmfii went fine although people only use it for Mario kart Wii

    not really

It got shutdown because somebody "accidentally" leaked the database for the amount of people using the beta.

RiiShop is the laziest way of downloading Wii games. Did somebody not think of this through?
  • BakerMan @ BakerMan:
although i ended up accidentally changing my nand with no way of going back bc i didn't know you needed a gamecube controller to restore it (i have a wii minus/1.1, which doesn't have gamecube controller support)
  • SylverReZ @ SylverReZ:
@BakerMan, I think you're talking about the recovery mode that the SaveMii used, and also was to restore softbricked systems.
  • SylverReZ @ SylverReZ:
If your NAND was hardbricked, then just buy another Wii. Or go with the dirty NAND flasher method.
  • BakerMan @ BakerMan:
and if i find the sd card i have my NAND backed up on, i can not only restore the NAND if i solder the right part in, but i can also put my NAND on dolphin, then i can play dolphin online, like PMEX Remix or MKWii Riibalanced
  • Xdqwerty @ Xdqwerty:
    Brb
  • SylverReZ @ SylverReZ:
@BakerMan, Oh yeah, that was a thing too. Dolphin does support Wiimmfi.
  • BakerMan @ BakerMan:
yeah you just need to put your NAND backup with wiimmfi on it
  • BakerMan @ BakerMan:
ngl i feel like if a bunch of my friends have wiis and know how to get wiimmfi and back up their NAND, then we could do a PMEX Remix tournament
  • BakerMan @ BakerMan:
maybe even add UMVC3/DBFZ and make it a biathlon/triathlon
