I made Platdude's Retro Collection in 3 weeks.
18 games, plus leftovers, all in 3 weeks.
But nowadays I'm also working on AGameAWeek.com, so the prospect of rushing through another 7 games a week as well as that.. Not something that sounds fun.

So, I'm going to take my time on the sequel.
It'll arrive eventually, but it'll take some time.
And since I'm going to spend time on it, I might as well make the games a wee bit better than last time.

I might even use more than one spritesheet, this time!!! Blimey!

Post your game suggestions here.
Any game is possible, but try to stick to games that would work!!! ... And are doable!!!!

And then leave the ideas to bubble away in my head, and we'll see what kind of randomness I come up with in about a month or so.

jay,
you know i will be as involved with this as i was with the last project! =). i will type up a short news bulletin for it because your homebrew projects sometimes go unnoticed. i don't think people realize how many games you have made in total.

http://gbatemp.net/index.php?showtopic=136334

i hope that helps!

cheers,

Hmm... I loved your first one with a passion, and since you mostly had single screen games, this will be hard to give suggestions for. I would love a racing game (actually I never could find "racer" in the first one. Any hints?). Maybe a Donkey Kong clone would be fun as well.

Don't worry, it'll be a complete redo-from-start, so I'm not worrying about scrolling and things like that. They'll more than likely happen, this time around.
I'm really after any ideas, at all..
If you think it could even vaguely be do-able, I'll have a play around with the idea.

And, thanks A.W. for frontpaging this.

I'll second this, but with the corollary that it be something in the style of the 1983 game Pitstop, more specifically, the C64 version. Video here. Grew up playing it. It's simple as hell, and is actually pretty crap, but you know; rose, glasses. I love the way your tires change colour when you take damage. Brilliant.

EDIT: It's like your car got beat up in some back alley. Hahaha, I have to go play it now.

Yeah, if I'm honest, I've always wanted to do a good old fashioned polygonal racer.
But. ..
I dunno how I could do it "old-school"
I mean, The DS is quick at throwing sprites around, and 8x8 blocks and things, but I'm not sure if it can draw all those lines that quickly. (Then again, it can render vids quick enough.. Maybe it's doable!!)

And PC's are just as bad, if not worse.. 2D's all but a lost art, with any modern 2D game instead relying on 3D polygons to throw around the sprites, instead of good old 2D techniques.

Modern coding sucks!!!

I do keep attempting it, though, so.. Maybe it'll happen!
You never know!

Wow i didn't even know about this retro collection, its exellent :-)

Ideas?

What about a simple managment game perhaps built around football (yuck) but better something else!

I loved dizzy on the zx spectrum back in the day but a fairly easy one to do would be bubble dizzy, there is already a remake sorta done but its in very very early stages, so yeah jumping on large bubbles to get to the top before your air runs out but oxigen tanks on the way up :-)

What about a pac-man 2 sequel , zelda clone!

Last one , a game i played on the old amiga and was a pd (public domain) game where you control a jeap speeding faster and faster as the game progresses and having to avoid triangles (well pyramids) , very adictive and scoring is done by how long you last.

Oh just one other i thought would be simple and quick to do , can't remember the name but you have to fill a % of the screen say 75% to complete a level, 2 free roaming baddies around the screen with 2 smaller dot baddies which can go around the outer line and any lines you make as your filling your screen up.....honestly its a good game.

cheers , paul

I just downloaded the first one, and its amazing! It's like an extension to retro game challenge. Movin' up from Atari to Nintendo graphics may be nice, but not really important. I third the racing game idea. Retro racers deserve their own genre separated from modern racers.

First off, Levels..
One of my main rules for the original, was to try not to make any specific Levels..
Basically, the second you add one level, you need 100, or the game'll be pretty non-repeat-play. So, I tend to focus on games that can be randomly generated, as opposed to those with predetermined events, and other factors.
But I'm willing to play about with that rule, somewhat, this time around.
If, in the coming weeks, I decide to start adding those, I might need to grab a few guys to help with some... um.. let's call them "layouts" as opposed to full on levels.
So, if anyone would like to help with that, let me know now, and I'll call on you if/when needed
wink.gif

Another issue, already (without even starting an ounce of anything!) is memory. At the current rate, I doubt this'll all be able to fit neatly into a single .nds like the last one. But I'll try my best not to end up needing 1,000 files on your DS cart. 'tis messy, and I don't much like to do that kind of thing!

Right, back to the game selection.
Some nice ideas, so far. I like the Manager idea, that'd be fun if I could think of something. I'm not into football, myself, either. But.. You can't fault the things, Football Managers do inexplicably tend to be more fun than they oughta be! I'll have to think about that.

RPG would require specifics, and are typically even larger in scale than other level-requiring things. If I can think small with an RPG, I could attempt that. .. Watch-Zelda?

Pacman sequel.. I DO have a certain pacman-esque sprite lying around... That sprite would do for TWO game..
biggrin.gif
(he says, thinking ahead)

Loved 75% game since the 80s.. Cracking game.. There's a (commercial) Dino Dig (or something) game on the DS that's actually that game..

Oh yeah, and Graphics...
In the original, everything was all jam packed into a single spritesheet.. Everything!! That's why everything looks kinda like everything else.. It's because it IS! This time around, there'll be less "General purpose" graphics, and more "for X/Y/Z" game graphics, so things will look better.
How much better hasn't yet been decided.
I think I'll need to get a couple of games moving, before I decide on that.

back when cell phones first started to get games there were a few rpgs i played (none of which i can recall the names for). they were very simple, you walked around, killed stuff, collected power ups, etc. the games lasted about 20min with a quick ending. to try and keep it retro fun but not ask you to code a rpg from start, why not keep it score related. to get past a certain point you need a certain score. with certain scores come certain weapons you can buy/use. to see a certain ending you need a certain score. this way the game can be pretty small and allow players to dungencrawl their way to the score they need to do what they want in the game.

berzerk! a great shooter, randomly generated levels and enemies. updated weapons, secrets, armor, etc could add to it.

a fighting game with stick figures! hah =)

OHOHOH

Winterbells port!
You have no idea how much I would love this. It could have old school graphics, and I wouldn't care. It would be awesome!

Also, how about Cube Racer? I love that game.

Just so that everyone knows, everytime someone's saying "A port of X/Y/Z" my head's going "Yeah, a game in the X/Y/Z Genre..."
eg, Duck Hunt = Can shooter, etc, etc..
I'm not doing straight forward ports : Repeat : I'm not doing straight forward ports..

Only when you get to the "Well, it might as well just be Tetris, then" kind of point, will they turn out as named ports.. And even then, they won't look like 'em!

So, keep the hype in check! Expect low res!

Scores as RPG Progression meters is a neat idea.. There's an idea formulating, not sure where it'll lead.

Oh, and fighting games need LOTS of sprites.. I'd rather not have to draw that much! (See..um, any and all of my games, ever! AGameAWeek.com!)

How about something along the lines of Bump n' Jump?

I've had a soft spot for that little game ever since playing it in the arcades - sometime back around the industrial revolution.
I'm not expecting a straight port, but something offering a similar experience to BnJ's "twitch reflex" gameplay would be pretty cool.

No need to say "Like" x/y/z, just don't be expecting a sprite for sprite remake
wink.gif

In fact, more than anything, expect the games to be a bit tougher.. 'cos I have an absolute hatred of all things "Tutorial". Stupid tutorials..

BnJ looks like fun.
