This Summer, we saw PlayStation relaunch PlayStation Plus as a multi-tiered service, while also merging it with their game streaming subscription PlayStation Now. The result of that change seems to have been a negative for Sony, because the latest financial report for the company shows that they lost 2 million subscribers in the process. Prior to the relaunch, there were 47.3 million PS+ users, but by the end of September, that number had dropped by 4%, to 45.4 million. It was also noted that active online users on PSN dropped by about a million, though Sony hopes to recapture that audience in due time. Beyond those two stats, sales, income, and PS5 console production are on the rise all across the board for PlayStation.

The number of PlayStation Plus subscriber accounts at the end of September decreased 4% from the end of June to 45.4 million accounts. We see that this decrease results from a greater decline in user engagement among PlayStation 4 (PS4) users than expected. • On the other hand, the ratio of PS Plus subscribers among PlayStation 5 (PS5) users remains at a level significantly higher than that of PS4. We are putting even more effort into accelerating the penetration of PS5 hardware to recover this user engagement going forward.

I preferred the PS+ and PSNow separated.
now, if I want to get a game on ps+ tier2 or tier3, I have to "add cost for a FULL year", while I could pay PSNow for 1 month while having PS+ active for more than this.

Before:
PS+ 1 year, with 1month of PSNow when I wanted : ok

Now :
PS+ 1 year, PS+++ is "additional price calculated up to the end of PS+ period". if you unsubscribe PS+ Tier2 or Tier3, it will take effect at the end of the currentPS+ !
You can't get 1 3 or 6 months of PStier+ while having PS+ active for 12months.

I don't want to be stuck with TierMax. I want temporary, when I want, access to PSNow.



Also, their catalogue is empty !
Where are the PS1/2/3/Vita/PSP games ? There are 43 games, most of which were already there on PSNow. Nothing new.
I want Eternal Sonata PS3 !
I want Nier's Drakengar PS2/PS3, etc.
I want Beyond Good and Evil PS3 !
is there a way to get the very first Assassin creed game ? I don't want to start the series with anything than the first... (and that's the same for other games like infamous)

No Final Fantasy 13 on PS4/PS5 ?! There are tons and tons of remake of all episodes on all consoles (even FF7 on NES ), but no FF13 on PS4...

Okay, they probably don't have all the licenses for all the games, but at least the first party games should be there from day one ! You don't launch a new plateform with nothing to see. They just changed the name of PSNow with the exact same catalog of games and the billing period stuck with PS+ period. It's WORSE than before, nothing better.

I'm still mad at Sony for dropping the ball so badly on the Vita.

The PSP was the god of all handhelds, and where most of us actually started learning how to mod consoles. The Vita could have been the greatest handheld gaming device of all time, prior to the Switch.

Sony simply abandoned it and made it a platform for indie developers with 99-cent shovelware. It could have been the perfect repository for PS2 classics, which they STILL have failed to truly make available. Haven't seen any plans for a PS2 mini, and most of the very best titles have never been released in any digital format.

I think they saw how much of the market share that iPhone and Android games were starting to capture, and thought THAT'S what gamers actually wanted.

No, we do not want an Angry Birds game on a $250 device that we spent $80 for a memory card just to be able to use. Shovel Knight is not a reason to own a Vita. Jetpack Joyride didn't move any units.

Such a disappointment.

It's a shame, because the homebrew community has proven that the Vita is everything the PSP was and more.

Could be more than one factor driving the downturn.

PS3 PSN is dead but the game servers are alive and I am guessing that Sony would like to shut down at least the file shares.
Once that happens the PS3 will be on life support, game servers would slowly follow as even more users peel off.
Then the hardware ages out and the software goes mostly underground.
PKGi would fail and places like nopaystation would thrive.

The PS4 has been JB and with new exploits for both the PS4 and PS5 on the horizon...
....Sony might be feeling the need to not be so giving or forgiving.

imo Sony isnt so bad... they've had their share of hackers go at them.
Its very hard for a small team of engineers to design a secure system from scratch and then put it out into world for everyone to hack.
And seriously who uses OtherOS on PS3? I used YellowDog and it sucked.

Anyway today we are getting the pick of the litter of PS3 games for free directly from Sony and they are still hosting live games.
It could be far worse.

Sales of the 3DS show otherwise. I'd say sales of Vita, but they were so embarrassing that Sony stopped publishing them early in the Vita's deathspiral.

I miss when I could just pay a single price and have everything instead of having to figure out what I want. If you offer me multiple tiers, if I even get it at all, I'm likely to get the lowest tier. Even though the lowest tier is pretty much the same as it was before, I feel worse about my purchase now than I did before because I'm getting "less".

Paying for online is stupid. Period. And that goes for both platforms (PS & Xbox).
Not because i'm cheapskate that doesn't want to pay to have that privilege, bit it's because it shouldn't be a thing in the first place. Now, both PS+ & Xbox Gold give free games each month for subscribers along with deals & discounts on games, but those are merely there to add content to the overall package..
And if i have no interest in either of those things, just online play, i simply shouldn't pay for something i won't use.

Maybe no one wants to pay a minimum of $60 USD to play online, or use cloud saves, or uhh... discounts.

Meanwhile Nintendo may have the $50 expansion with DLC and Sega genesis and N64 games.
BUT STILL HAVE $20 Subscription.

(And before anyone says "But steam on pc has free online and clouds saves") Yes, these are also facts too.

Basically $20 to play online yearly.

I mean, it has "free" NES and SNES games, but I'd never touch those if I still had a Switch and paid for NSO.

When your competitor's console has more backwards compatibility with not only theirs but your OWN GAMES that you're willing to charge out the flipping wazoo for and you can't even be bothered to figure out your OWN esoteric hardware that even a gaming PC from the the GTX 900+ series can emulate, or even a PORTABLE gaming PC @ 720p (to varying mileage) so you just throw in cloud nonsense that not even all WIRED connections can keep a steady connection to, all the while not even trying to make the games available to download on PS3?
AND STILL throwing in PAL releases of games in certain territories?

Yeah, that's bound to happen. Not to mention the blatant skimping on good games on the "Essentials" tier.
