Hello everyone. I got a chipped PS2 in order to play imported videogames and the console plays them fine, whether it's a PS1 or a PS2 title. However it doesn't play FFVII international for some odd reason.
Do you have any idea on what could be the issue?
The console is running matrix infinity 1.91, and the model of the PS2 is SCPH-75004

what happens exactly? that is the latest except for there's a 1.93 for a bug with I think Taiwanese consoles. that's the latest for everywhere else though.

it could be either ap or a dud/bad disc make you're using. I don't know if that game has ap or not. several games, like a lot of capcom ones at least, can detect modchips. I don't think you can turn off the matrix infinity to bypass it, but you can patch it, if that is what it is.

What's an AP? Interestingly enough, after your suggestion, I tried putting the second disk of FFVII in, and it plays. But it has a black bar underneath the image.
Could only the first disk have the piracy measure?

Oh god I think you guys are right. Never in my wildest dreams would I think a PS1 game would have this serious of an anti-mod chip measure! Also this console is louder than fuck, I might have gotten cheesed with this marketplace PS2.
If I buy a Japanese console, will it play on my PAL TV?

you'll need a converter. electronics in Japan and America are compatible, but not with Pal. that's a converter for power. I tried to test it on my system, but I don't have an optical drive with my laptop, and the one on my parents computer seems to have died as it's no longer detected. :( you could try patching the game if it is ap, but if disc 2 worked, I think it was a failed burn tbh.

But the PS2 slim says it's dual voltage. So it should work on my European TV without a converter.
Also, this isn't a failed burn, it's a genuine disk I bought from Japan! So it has to be anti piracy.
How the hell does it detect I'm using a chip?!

I have no idea. I think you're right about the converter, because at least the slims use one of those generic figure eights for the power. the series x and the ps5 even still use them.

have to replace the laser in my ps2, so there was no guarantee it was going to work for me either. it skips and stutters A LOT.

Final Fantasy VII International does not use Anti-Mod protection. http://redump.org/disc/8233/

The message you got is likely because the system is having trouble reading that specific disc, or reading CD-ROMs in general. Have you been able to play other CD-ROM games (PS1 or PS2) on this system?

Also, if your FF7 International is on a CD-R, it could be related to the quality of the disc being poor.

Honestly, it kind of sounds like the beginning stages of disc rot (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Disc_rot). I have 3 copies of Chrono Cross. My first ever version was sitting in storage and Disc 2 will not read on anything, my second copy, the first disc will not read on anything. However my 3rd copy (greatest hits ver) works PERFECTLY. The weirdest part is, that they are all in MINT condition, at least on a surface level.

I have a crappy fake matrix infinity chip installed on my PS2 Slim 90xxx. No PSX games ever worked and many PS2 discs didnt, although legit PS2 discs worked fine. OPL over the network solved my problem with PS2 games and Mechapwn dit it for the PSX ones. I burn PSX games using Verbatim discs and ImgBurn with write speed AWS (variable) and everyone has worked so far. I hope this helps. Be sure to check if your PS2 model is compatible with Mechapwn if you decide to install it.

I missed that. It sounds like the disc itself could be scratched, defective, or failing. If it's just scratches it might be repairable as long as it's scratches on the data side of the side. Scratches on the label side of a disc are really bad news.

I guess the upside is your console is probably fine. You could put the disc that won't work on your console into a PC and see if the disc has unreadable sectors.

I was almost able to test for you. I tried these old cds that don't very well, and I got a "could not read disc" error just like you, so I was going to try these replacement cds. I had gotten my parents' dvd drive to work again by flashing an update to the bios, the game burned, but then when I tried the replacement disc, i/o error and the dvd drive had gotten a "decryptor error," so it's not being detected correctly. that was that again. I guess the drive does need to be replaced or something.

You should rip the first disc on your pc to eliminate that it's a defective/rotten disk, and compare it with the redump release.
The tv signal should be accepted no matter if it's a Jap/US/or EU console, and i'm not talking about the voltage (i'm not sure about that), i'm talking about that if you use scart it should show the games in color on your PAL TV regardless of the region of the game, provided your tv has a scart port, same thing for component, but if you're only using composite they will show up as black and white and there's no way around that.
You can also try other cd based games either PS1/or PS2 to see if they work or not.

I tried playing some US PS1 games through PS3 on a CRT and all I got was black and white colors. My cable looks like three cables and it goes towards a scart thingie. Does that mean it isn't really scart?

I rather enjoy a life of taking it easy. I haven't reached that life yet though.
