You should launch in non-applet mode. Hold down the top R trigger and press A on any game title while holding down the R until homebrew screen shows, then launch homebrew title.

I was trying to launch snes emulator, retroarch etc and they would crash with an error

Hi everyone! Long time lurker but created an account today and am going to get into the switch hacking scene cause why the hell not!? I have had some experience getting homebrew and usb backups working with my Wii (years ago) so have some understanding on how things work but wow, the switch is very different.

I am planning on following a guide from github (unable to post a link cause I'm brand new, but can give more details or be more specific with what guide I'm using later on I guess) and have an rcm jig arriving in the mail later today. The guide runs through everything from entering rcm to creating a NAND backup, creating emuNAND, dumping keys, etc.

My switch is unpatched as I got it a few days after launch. I am also running the latest firmware (11.0.1 I believe).

I just wanted to clarify a few things before I get started. I have looked through the FAQ and read several pages from this thread but naturally I can't really go through all of it as I would die of old age before I finished reading it all haha. Anyway... Here we go:

I am to understand that sx os is no longer supported, (RIP xecuter :( ) and also not available for my firmware anyway, so I will use atmosphere.

I won't be able to load xci with atmosphere and will have to convert them to nsp to install, and that tinwoo is able to do this? Not totally sure if I can have the xci on the SD card or if I will have to use nsusbloader to send them over from my PC.

I am not planning on using the switch online while using atmosphere, so I will have to install my homebrew apps via USB loading (maybe called payload injection? Not sure as I haven't actually started messing around with it yet).

I would like the option to play online if I so choose. My understanding is I can simply power off the switch, remove the SD card, and turn it on and it will load into stock firmware, then it is safe to use the internet. I have already copied Mario kart over to my system memory, as everything else I plan on playing will remain on the SD card and I'll just be playing single player offline.

To get back to cfw I can just delete my wifi connections, power off, put in my SD card, put in the jig to enter rcm and boot atmosphere from emuNAND and then I'm good to go as everything will be installed to the SD card.

Lastly, the jig is only required to enter rcm and once the switch is there I can remove it? Some of the guides aren't very clear on when I can remove the jig and slide my joycon back on.

Sorry for the wall of text, just wanna be sure I'm heading in the right direction! Thanks to everyone for all of the info so far. Excited to get started! :)
  • The truth is we do not know if SX OS is no longer being supported. The reason is because it does not support the latest firmware which is 11.0.1 and it has been quite some time since that firmware has been released so either support is dead or its taking a long time to implement
  • You do not have to convert .XCI files in order to use them with Atmosphere. Certain title installers can install them directly without any prior conversion
  • Homebrew applications are simply .NRO files that you place inside the /switch folder on your SD card. If you so wish, you can install them like games if you install them as .NSP files however not all homebrew apps come as .NSP files so you may need to make your own if you so wish
  • Your understanding of playing online is not safe. The console retains traces of CFW even if you do not boot CFW when you go online or take out the SD card. The only guaranteed ways of avoiding ban are not hacking or making a clean eMMC backup before running any CFW/homebrew
  • You are correct in that the sole purpose of the jig is to enter RCM. The reason not all guides are specific on when you remove it is because technically you can keep it inserted the entire time if you do not wish to dock your Joy-Cons
I am having a issue with my switch stuttering when playing some games like Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity (stutters every 8 seconds with audio and video lag) & Persona 5 Strikers where it will stutter audio and video bad when loading screen or playing a video tutorial in game. Is this a microsd card issue? I am using latest SXOS emmunand with exFAT. Anything to try or test? Thanks
Try formatting the SD card to FAT32.

Thanks for the guide bigonya. I'll be looking through it shortly before getting started.

I guess the only real important part of my previous message is... If I want to go back to stock to play online without risk of getting banned (or less risk I guess?), I can just power off, remove the SD card, and reboot?

Ah ok thanks for this! So in order to go back to stock I would have to flash the backup I make before starting with installing any homebrew.

That's interesting as I would think with using the emuMMC, there is literally no change to the sysMMC on the switch. Good to know thanks!

I guess another question is, by booting into rcm and using a tool (hekate?) to make a backup, does this flag the console in any way?

Thanks for the tips. Another question. For the hack on 11.0.1 is it only tethered that works for now?
The only exploit that works on any firmware above 4.1 currently is Fusee Gelee which is the tethered coldboot. If you do not wish to be tethered, you can solder a modchip into your console to push the payload for you.

RCM in of itself is not a ban risk since it is launched before the main OS, Horizon, is running. Therefore anything performed in RCM is generally considered to be undetectable.

I am currently on my brother's nintendo online family account. If I were to be banned, could it possibly affect his or his wife's switch?

Nintendo Accounts are rarely, if ever, banned. Not to mention, people have used Nintendo Accounts from banned consoles on unbanned consoles without issue. The point is if something were to happen to your Nintendo Account in case you were banned, it would be very surprising.

Ah ok so it is the console that gets banned, not the actual account. Thanks!

*edit*

One other thing too, my SD card is currently exfat, but (I think) tinwoo only supports fat32, is it just as simple at plugging it into my pc, copying everything off, formatting it to fat32 and then copying everything back on?

Hey Guys, So I am trying to transfer all my information to a larger micro SD card (128gb->512gb) I tried to do the NH guide to doing this, with the only difference that I used an old back-up of my boot1-boot0 as I do not have enough room to create a new one on my current micro SD card. (only have 1gb of space left) now when I boot into atmosphere from hekate, I am left with nothing from my original emummc when booting my new SD card. If I use my old SD card, everything boots up fine and I can use my console as normal. I am no debating if I should use a disk cloning utility, but I cannot find a good one for mac that will account for my emummc partition. any help would be appreciated.

I redid my sd card using DeepSea. Most apps give me an error when I try to launch it and some completly crash it I have to hit power button to reload

Can I downgrade the firmware to a lower version so it will be a full cfw not using a tethered boot?

All homebrew applications and even the Switch itself do support exFAT however FAT32 is the recommended format because exFAT can corrupt your SD card unlike FAT32.

Well what is the error? Those codes are usually very specific to the cause.

Putting the exploits on lower firmware versions aside, downgrading is only practical if you have not burnt fuses. The Switch has an anti-downgrade system using fuses that compare the current fuse count to the firmware you are booting. Basically, the Switch will refuse to boot if you try to boot a firmware lower than the fuse count making downgrading practically impossible. Technically you can bypass this with Fusee Gelee because it is triggered before the fuse check but that would mean you would have to use an already existing exploit in order to boot the console so using Fusee Gelee to try to boot into another exploit means you are using 2 exploits to load 1 which is pointless.

Retroarch and some others Error Code 2168-0002 (0x4a8) others 2001-0000. Pnes and Psnes are the only two working

I personally never cared for deepsea, or any autoinstaller bs, I'd rather know what I'm installing myself...
- Format SD card to FAT32
- Fresh install (meaning delete these same folders on sd card, and then copy/paste these new folders to sd) of Atmosphere files on SD card. - https://github.com/Atmosphere-NX/Atmosphere/releases
- Get and put Sigpatches, according to your FW and Atmosphere version, in "atmosphere" folder - https://github.com/ITotalJustice/patches/releases Unzip files and copy to "sd:\ atmosphere" folder
- Boot into Hekate menu, select "CFW' or/ "Payloads", then select "Fusee-Primary"
When launching homebrew/emulators:
You should launch in non-applet mode. Hold down the top R trigger and press A on any game title on main menu while holding down the R until homebrew screen shows, then launch homebrew title.
