For context, I've had this cart for a long time, and it worked perfectly until I updated my 3ds.
The cart itself is an R4 infinity, it doesn't list 3ds support but before I updated it worked just fine on it.
The 3ds is just a standard 3ds that I modded, which is the only reason I updated in the first place, the specific version it's on is 11.13.0-45E, if that helps for anything.

When I boot up the 3ds, everything works as it normally does, but when I insert the cart, the custom theme's music stops, and then after a few seconds it just freezes completely. I tried just taking out the SD to see if it would work, but nothing, I did somehow manage to get it to read the cart (with the SD inserted), but it just showed a solid white box in the card, and trying to actually load it just showed an error screen saying to turn off the 3ds.

I hope this is enough info for someone to help, I'm new here so I just listed everything that seemed relevant.

Is the flash cart's kernel and firmware up to date too? I'd check that, and then run the latest WOODR4 kernel or Y's Menu.
I think the kernel may not be up to date, and I don't know which firmware you mean, I'm still kinda new to this stuff and don't really know where to check either

doing research shows me there is 4 versions of the R4 Infinity... Not sure which you have... But I would grab the stuff you need from here:

ok, from the page I can then tell that I do actually have the latest version (I have infinity 3) since I actually did have to try to restore the cart once, sadly it doesn't list support for 11.x.

What firmware were you on before and how did you update to 11.13 seeing as 11.14 is most current one out there

probably one of the earliest, (1.6-ish?), I updated I believe on october last year (or a bit earlier), and I hadn't tried to use the cart until today, so, that's why I'm not on the latest version
.
This isn't actually my main 3ds, if you were wondering why the version was so outdated, I do have another one since I accidentally got the EU one (this one) while I was in the americas, meaning I couldn't play any US version games I bought.
I updated on the same day I started modding the 3ds, as well, just thought I'd put that out there.

I'd rather not get into unnecessary details involving why I got the EU one instead of the US one, as I don't want to stray off the main topic.

1.6? on the 3DS? if this is the case then your card probubly was one of the ones ninty blocked with firmware updates, you can actually remove the blacklist by installing an older flashcart block list iirc.

If you have B9S and Luma3DS there is no blocking of flashcarts that worked previously on early 3DS firmware. Luma disables the whitelist checks.

Crashing system on inserting a flashcart sounds more like contact issues or a defective cart. The micro-SD contents (flashcart kernel) does not have an impact on that. Try opening the flashcart in GodMode9 [C:] GAMECART
I've seen a flashcart crashing GodMode9 as well.

If you want to play DS games, give TWiLight Menu++ a try.

try changing your system time to something like 2014 or whenever the flashcard came out
No. That doesn't work in this case (the "changing date trick" is only functional with timebomb).

My advice for this case is the same as @KleinesSinchen said: installing B9S+Luma (that only fact enables older/blocked flashcards -because a console firmware update- per se). And if this doesn't work, you can try to load the flashcard with either NTRLauncher, TWL Slot-1, R4 Stage2 TWL or with TWLMenu++.

Just tried opening through GodMode9, it crashed, it showed "0 bytes" but after testing it out with a regular game cart it seems that it does this anyways.
Removing the micro SD still crashes it so I guess it might actually be defective. Is there anything I could do from here? (apart from getting another cart)

Try to load it with TWLMenu++. Also, you can try to repair the DS mode functionality (supposing that it has something to see), following this guide.

PS: What is the Luma version that your console has right now? (You can verify it pressing SELECT button on boot)

You cannot open or copy any regular game with GodMode9 and the program crashes with a legit game? Well, that is not supposed to happen.
The 0 Bytes thing should disappear when opening [C:] while a game is inserted. It sometimes shows nonsense with a flashcart but it shouldn't crash.

I thought the timebomb went off, that's why I recommended it.
Anyways. Isn't OP running Luma anyways?
He/She said that the 3DS is modded...

It doesn't crash with the legit game, it's only the 0 bytes thing, and it did correct itself after opening [C:], opening it with the flashcart does crash it, however.

I am running Luma, I just don't know what to do with it.

At least we now know the console (cart reader) is okay. It sounds like a hardware (flashcart) related problem. Carefully clean the contacts of the R4. Maybe the Paper trick can help in case of bad connection (your own risk of course). I would try another, preferably older DS model as well.

Nothing to do. Once Luma3DS is loaded, the whitelist check is disabled.

That seemed to fix it, I guess it was just really dusty, I did try cleaning it a bit before, but I guess I didn't clean it thoroughly enough.
Thanks for all the help.

@Maximumbeans, Indeed. I've been working on getting this Infecutus chip to work on my PS2. But after soldering, I realised that a plastic piece was missing from the power ribbon cable to the power and eject buttons.
  • SylverReZ @ SylverReZ:
Now I could go with soldering the contacts from the cable to the connector on the mobo, but doesn't sound like a good permanent solution.

Man, that's beyond my brain  I'm no good with hardware for now. I'd like to get into hardmods in future though

@Maximumbeans, Maybe start practice soldering. Get a cheap-ass soldering iron and follow some good YouTube tutorials.

Least my experience has gotten better than over a decade ago. My iron would constantly bump into components and break them.

Sounds good. I actually did soldering but like 16 years ago for school so uuuuh probably rusty haha
  • SylverReZ @ SylverReZ:
@Maximumbeans, Same here. I did soldering at school from a teacher who I honestly liked since he had plenty of good electronics experience.
