The Switch is literally a Wii U revision.

switch is completely different. yes the controller is somewhat similar but requires the wii U to be nearby (it is not a portable console like the switch). the switch controller attaches to the system itself. Even games are done differently on wii U vs switch. Wii U allows you to use tv in combination with wii U controller. This is not possible on the switch unless you dock the switch but doing this disables the switch screen. so game play is done differently on switch vs wii U, unless you are playing a game that takes advantage of just one screen.

Now one could argue that the Wii U is a console version of the 3ds/ds/dsi. they both have two screen that can be used in combination with each other. Wii u controller and tv or two built in screen on 3ds/ds/dsi

I don't understand why people keep saying this. The old Nintendo WFC was shut down because Nintendo had less control over it than they do over the current 3DS online services. And the Wii Shop endured for a very long time. (Of course, that was also accessible from the Wii U, but nonetheless.)
Think about it from this perspective: If you have something that's taking up space and processing power on one of your servers, and it's not profitable anymore, what sense does it make to keep online? At that point you're just burning money to keep a service that almost nobody uses anymore running.

It's such a shame, considering that the Switch is a home console that can be played on the go and not a portable that can be played on TV. :)

I really enjoy the 3DS and hope we can still see developers improving and investing on its hacks for a bit longer. :D

Let's see what comes next! ^_^

On the other hand: keeping the service running may encourage people to start or continue buying digital games when they might not otherwise, as it helps to allay fears that current services may be suspended prematurely. This benefit may easily outweigh the costs of keeping servers running, which can't be very much. After all, it remains that if keeping the Wii Shop running was unusually costly, it would have been shut down long ago.

What are you talking about? They may look somewhat alike, but the Switch is SO MUCH BETTER than the Wii U.

When online shuts down, at least Wiimmfi will re-enable Mario Kart 7 right away.
Well, maybe someone could create dedicated servers for the 3DS games but Wiimmfi certainly won't do that. They are emulating GameSpy's servers. Nintendo Network (which is what MK7 uses) is an entirely different thing.

Not necessary anyway:
Quote from Nintendo: "The spokesperson added: "We currently have no plans to end any existing online services for the Nintendo 3DS family of systems. Online play and Nintendo eShop will continue to be available and it will be possible to access and redownload all previously purchased content in the foreseeable future."

Holy shit...
This is the end guys.
We'll never see a portable console anymore ⊙.☉
Switch Lite?
I guess all the parts have finally been used up. A shame they didn't try to squeeze in one last "Mario 35th Edition" 2DS XL console.

At least the eShop should be open for a little longer but I hate to imagine 3DS digital only games being lost when Nintendo deems the online shop not worth the cost of keeping the servers running.
considering they still run wii u servers i don't see why not

It was just shut down last year, after twelve years of operation. I expect that if it was expensive to maintain, it would not have lasted twelve years.

(Technically I think it's still running – but you can only download things you've already purchased.)
