'FitXR' Impression

GBAtemp_review_banner_FitXR_Impressions.png

I’ve never been a fan of gyms. What with getting whiffs of others’ body odour, sharing sweat-drenched equipment or paying to have someone yell at me so that I can improve my performance, I never really bought into the hype. That doesn’t mean that I don’t workout. I do go for outdoor runs, hikes and perform at-home strength and HIIT workouts. This goes on to show that I can exercise without the need for a gym and maintain a healthy BMI. So it did come off as odd to me that only due to the pandemic and social distancing measures did gym-lovers realise that they can work out at home and are actively looking for ways to do so.

For this demographic, FitXR launches at an appropriate time. Developed by the same team behind BoxVR, FitXR is a fitness-oriented app with gamifed features that describes itself as a “virtual fitness studio” with the aim to “to put the fun back into exercise”. It launched on the Oculus Quest a couple of weeks ago, with a release on Steam and PlayStation VR planned for later this year, and I had the opportunity to test it on the Quest. With its focus on at-home training, I was curious if it could up my workout routine with its tech and gamified focus.

FitXR’s concept is inspired from boxing and is quite straightforward: with the controllers, hit the targets approaching you and duck or dodge when obstacles hurl towards you. Even if it sounds easy, it’s more engaging in practice. Some targets must be reached from certain angles with jabs and uppercuts while others will come successively at you and will test your reflexes; all of these exercises are performed in tandem with choreographed upbeat tracks. In a matter of minutes after wearing my virtual gloves for the first time, I could feel my heart pounding against my chest and by the end of my first session, I was sweating more than I thought I would. The next day I was even feeling muscle sores as I was not used to those exercises FitXR engaged me with, showing that I still have room for improvement, but importantly it showed that it was indeed a workout option.

Using FitXR as a workout does feel more fun with its gamified and "multiplayer" aspects as I collect points from every hit and see how I perform compared to others training live with me (whose avatars are also visible). This competitive element did push me to improve on how hard I hit and to maintain my streak as these would reward me with more points and a better chance to top the leaderboard. The audio feedback from virtual trainers who gauge your performance is also a nice-to-have but not really a game-changer.

However, the “gameplay” itself is not much varied, with only combinations of punches, blocks, dodges and squats at its disposal. But then again FitXR is more of a fitness app than a game, with gamified features adding the fun element to it. Its 4+ hours of boxing-inspired workout sessions of varying duration and intensity, is well suited to every user from beginners to advanced. There are even DLC packs available to further get fit with VR.

If your VR headset was gathering dust, FitXR is a good excuse to clean it up and put it to good use with the added benefit of workouts. At an RRP of $29.99, it’s worth a try should you be looking for an interactive way to workout. The Oculus Quest seems like a perfect fit for it being a wireless headset that frees you of any tangle issues. Those missing the gym will also find its multiplayer and coaching features welcome, even if somewhat basic. As for me, I’m adding FitXR to my workout routine so that I can have an odourless “gym-like” workout experience that does work out for me.

I somehow get the sinking feeling that I'd get more of a workout from Ring Fit Adventure based on the description here...in the event my current job doesn't have me burning enough calories. (Not that I'm anywhere in the same ballpark as fat as Boogie2988)

haven't tried the Ring Fit Adventure myself but look forward to trying it as both try to spice up the fitness world with some gamified aspects

After reading the article and watching the video, I was going to say the same thing. I believe Ring Fit Adventure is the superior workout game and I wouldn't bother with this. Not only because it seems to offer very little, but also because I wouldn't care for wearing a VR set while working out.

You've either never been to a nice gym or you're just generalizing what you think the gym environment is really like.
Yeah exactly, my gym is completely fine too, especially with the whole Corona thing. Large area, spaced equpment, well ventilated and cooled, cleaned before and after usage .etc.

If you're just trying to stay active and healthy, stuff like home workouts and these games are fine but for people who want to get stronger and/or bigger, it's not really as feasible to buy a ton of expensive equipment and be able to progressivly overload the weight to actually make noticable progress.

I give them major props for not drowning their promotional materials in pictures of buff shirtless dudes.

But isn't this an obvious Beat Saber knockoff? Beat Saber would give you a pretty good workout too.

I've played BoxVR (now rebranded as FitXR) on an Index and Quest and it has more of a focus on fitness than something like Beat Saber. Even with some of the shorter workouts, they can get pretty intense and get you out of breath and sweating pretty good. They have a decent variety of tracks, though not quite as much support or paid songs like Beat Saber which is so much more popular and backed by Facebook now. While Beat Saber at the super hard difficulties may be comparable to BoxVR, with Beat Saber you are swinging your arms around which conserves some momentum and the dodging isn't very tiring. I enjoy Beat Saber and other games like The Climb for fun and some exercise in VR, but it's a lot more effort to perform a lot of quick jabs, hooks, uppercuts, and squats with BoxVR and it's a much better exercise option in my opinion. I really feel like I really got some exercise in with some playlists in BoxVR compared to Beat Saber. I haven't played Ring Fit Adventure and I'm not sure how it compares in terms of intensity or variety, but BoxVR has been the best workout I've gotten in VR so far.

For the sweat, I have a VR Cover for my Quest which replaces the facial interface with a PU leather pad that can easily be wiped down and cleaned or swapped out easily since it's attached with velcro. I also have my Quest modded with a Vive Deluxe Audio Strap for built-in headphones which help with comfort, but aren't necessary. The immersion of VR with the environment and tracked controllers along with the music tracks help take you out of the mindset that you're just doing exercise and helps keep you on track with daily goals, daily playlists, burned calorie counter, and stats. With the Quest being tetherless, it's nice to be able to take it anywhere, set up a Guardian boundary real quick, and get some exercise or other games in. As with most things VR, you have to try it to really understand how much of a gamechanger it can be and flat 2D videos don't do it justice.

The thought of a sweaty soggy headset after one of these workouts is kinda gross ngl
Even a lot of non-workout oriented VR games can get you pretty sweaty, that's why nobody should use the standard "foam" face pads that come with headsets. First thing I did after ordering my Vive was order a faux leather replacement pad, and I'm still using it with my Pimax.

Anyway, as good as rhythm/music-based VR games are for building up a sweat, if anybody wants something a little more progression based or arcadey, I'd highly recommend Holopoint (arcade bow shooter) or Until You Fall (roguelike melee brawler).

I kinda like using yur.fit with the htc vive, granted I don't really pay too much attention to the yur.fit calorie tracker, but figured its a good little extra stat to have tracked, one idea I would really like to see is VR combined with an exercise/spin bike, I have seen a few commercial solutions, but I kinda feel like there should be some hodge podge DIY setup using a few sensors and an Arduino or something to track the speed of the wheel and map it into the game so you can do virtual bike rides., would be even better if you could mount a little tension control device to the knob on the bike that would tweak the tension based on the incline of the virtual road so it tougher going uphill and easier going down

Neat I missed this release! I'll demo it soon. And yes, get a faux leather pad so the headset doesn't get sweaty.

It would be really great to see exercise bikes get used like mentioned above. I do my best cardio while playing games on an elliptical (Usually over an hour of jogging!). While I could do that at a gym, it's much easier at home. No way would I trust a VR headset on an elliptical though, that's a guaranteed way to fall off!

I need to figure out a way to weight some joycons for playing switch while also lifting weights. That's my next step for game/exercise time. Perhaps just taping the weights to the backs of my hands, or even better to make custom weights.. lol I'll figure something out.

Weighted wrist straps and ankle straps are a thing. I have the vague impression that they are associated with injuries, though.

feels to me like a rip off from Moonlight.xyz which offers freestyle, fists and sword (like on beatsaber) and is 100% free.
