Hello.:)

I am sorry to hear, you are another USB Stick Victim.:(

It is a known Issue.
The Wii Community here warned about his Behavior many Times.
Your suddenly happened Issue is the Reason, why USB Sticks/Flash Drives/Pen Drives/Thumb Drives are NOT recommended for the USB Loaders. It has to do with the Write Mode. For Example download Covers or Dump Games.
Reading is not the Problem with this Devices. They stop working WITHOUT Warning.:(

We know that some Types/Brands could work fine. But it is simply not a RELIABLE Device.
@Cyan said it a many Times before,to not use it and to use HDDs (with Power supply) instead.

You can maybe try to re-format it on the PC and make some read/write Operations.Maybe it works again.:)

Good Luck
Thank you.:)

Are there any drives you recommend? I am looking for something I can keep as 1 partition formatted as FAT32 for Wii, Gamecube, VC games, WiiWare, and ROMs (ie want to use USBLoaderGX, NINTENDONT, TriiForce, etc.). Should it be USB or externally powered? Would SolidState be worth the investment? I found wiki.gbatemp.net's USB_Devices_Compatibility_List guide, but its a bit overwhelming with info and things to consider.

Thanks!

SSD are good and ok,but depends on the Controller/Case.
I have used this Combination:
https://www.amazon.de/gp/product/B00OJ3UJ2S/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1
https://www.amazon.de/gp/product/B076F364XX/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1

But encountered some maybe "rare" Issue - it affects the Wii/Wii U´s WiFi Connection when placed on the Top of the Devices.

My personal Recommendation is this great HDD:
https://www.amazon.de/gp/product/B06W55K9N6/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o03_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

2 TB should be enough for GameCube and Wii Games.
But I think the 3 and 4 TB Modells should also compatible.

It is formatted with FAT32 in one Piece.
Until today never encountered Intializing/Loading Issues.:)

Thank you.:)

A thought came to mind, and this may be helpful for others reading. Does anyone know if hybrid drives work with loaders? It would be nice having frequently used games load faster while retaining higher storage capacity in one device.

I think,it makes not really a Difference (except the Price),please note the USB 2.0 "Limitation" on the Wii.:)

So the SATAs and maybe cheap "China" SSDs are a good Solution.:)

Thank you.:)

Hi,

I'm new to this community.

I followed the guide exactly and have v10 beta52 installed. The very first time I loaded up USB Loader GX I didn't do anything but start a game and it work, it loaded up and I was playing.

The next time I tried to load USB loader GX I got stuck on "initialising USB" so I change IOS loader to 58. USB loader GX now loads and displays all my game but I get the dreaded black screen with the controller disconnecting when trying to load into any game. I have to power off the wii.

Now I am using a USB stick (I've tried multiple in fact) - which I know isn't recommended, I don't have an external HDD to try and I don't want to buy one if it's not going to fix the issue. I'm using wii backup manager to transfer the games.

I have reinstalled cIOS multiple times. I really don't know where to go from here, I've spent most of the day reading this forum trying to find a fix to no avail. :( Please help!

I've also tried using wiiflow as well and get the same issue.

--------------------- MERGED ---------------------------

You may have to buy an hdd. Not enough power is getting to that flash drive.

Okay, I'll have to see if I can borrow one. I'll feel silly if that's the issue (which it probably is). I assume it has to be a powered HDD?

Okay, I don't know why I didn't try this before. I have been formatting my USB sticks in NTFS format. I just tried in FAT32 and it seems to be working. I'll keep testing.

Hi!

Is it possible to run games nowadays on my config? (Syscheck below in a spoiler)
With BOOTICE I made my USB stick and even MicroSD to get recognized by WII. And I even can play genuine PAL disc on my NTSC-U console which I thought wouldn't be possible.I Just click the disc icon in WiiFlow. (250 is forced globally)

But I cannot run any games from USB dongle not with USB loader GX nor wiith WiiFlowLite. Well - I've only tried Mario Kart PAL and Mario Kart NTSC - neither worked. PAL version even showed the first section of loading gauge, but then - "bzzzt" with dvd drive and complete black screen.

While I'm mentally preparing to format my HDD in FAT32 (Oh gosh) - I still would like to know:
Is there anything ridiculous with my setup, so switching to HDD won't help much?
And are there any settings combos which I can possibly try? Mostly asking about forcing videomodes and region patches.

Wii is connected by Y W and R wires. When I got my wii - it was already softmodded, I haven't installed anything. Only used homebrew channel to run stuff from /apps/

Thank you guys!

Ok, today I bough HDD, formatted it FAT32 and USBloader and wiiflow both recognize it. I've tried PAL and NTSC versions of the same game. The result's are the same black screen without any noticeable changes. So probably that wasn't initially because of my key USB.

Which measures can I undertake to track down the issue? I've tried choosing Force this, and force that. But that's just trying blindly, no difference.

Do I have to install new cIOS on my 249? Currently it says:
IOS249[38] (rev 14): Trucha Bug, ES Identify, NAND Access, USB 2.0

Full sysCheck is in my post above.

Thank you!

Thank you!

Please correct your cIOS 249/250 to d2x Version 8 final or better Version 10 beta52
You can use this Guide please:
https://wii.guide/cios.html

Use then @blackb0x Version from the USBLoader GX please:
https://gbatemp.net/threads/usb-loader-gx.149922/page-1316#post-8856063

Please check the Loader´s IOS in the Settings - it should be 58 and please
set emuNAND Saves (for SD Card Saves instead of the real Wii´s Memory) to PARTIAL only or
maybe better turn it off.

Please be sure you use Port 0 for the USB HDD:
kri1pk52t3s41.jpg

Please check your ISO´s/Games if they are ok:
https://www.gametdb.com/Wii/Search

Please use always the WiiBackup Manager for the Game Transfers to you HDD:
https://gbatemp.net/threads/wii-backup-manager-for-windows.188295/

Good Luck.
Thank you.:)

Thank you, dear Alexander1970 for the detailed reply!

I have followed your guide and the guide at the link, and everything worked like a charm:)
I was a bit puzzled by the fact that I should set loader as 58, because I haven't had anything in that slot, and USBloader even warned me about that. But I just followed and it worked.

/////////////////////////////////
Fun fact: HDD wasn't necessary. Worked both - noname USB dongle (8GB) FAT32 and brand new Seagate(1TB) FAT32 with no extra power cable.

for USB I used really old BOOTICE_v0.9.2011.0512 formatter software.
There - "Parts Manage" -> "ReFormat USB disk"

I'll paste here the USB key guide from reddit user
MalcolmEggs (I cannot post links here I believe).

Now you will need to set some formatting options
a) Select "USB-HDD Mode" from list
b) Set "Partition Alignment" to "Align to 1MB / Align to Flash blocks"

After clicking the Next button, you will be given file system options
a) Set File System type to FAT 32
b) Enter a Volume label
c) Click OK to finalize settings
d) Click OK one last time to begin formatting flash drive

This way I believe most random USB dongles can be prepared to play games on WII.

:toot:

So i decided to dust off my wii.. upgrade my hacks, get a new drive since my old wd hdd seems to be dying after being connected to wii all the time (no idea if it's disk but i could swear it was spinning when console was turned off)

I bought a 128GB Sandisk Cruzer Ultra (usb 3.2)... and obviously ran into same problem.. as people here. Black screen, controller turning off, total freeze. After whole night and day figuring out different ways of formatting pendrive, looking for info, hell even tried vm with some windows tools ;D I downgrade cios from 10 beta52 to v8 nothing helped...

Then i decided to check for different cioses, figured i'd start with looking what leftovers I got from old hacking..
And i noticed this.. on syscheck...
Code:
IOS224[57] (rev 65535, Info: hermesrodries-v6): Trucha Bug, NAND Access, USB 2.0

And not only launched the game I knew to be working, it even launched game I thought was borked (didn't launch on a good drive)

Makes me wonder... what the hell is the difference between this old cios I got and newer ones that are recommended in guides.

anyway for those in the future who will end up here.

I ran USB Loader GX r1272 (downloaded it today from homebrew channel while looking for potential fixes) (before 1271, didnt work, bu it's prolly unrelated)
Loader's IOS 58
Game 's IOS 224 (OR WHEREVER hermesrodries-v6 you have)
fs: fat32
mbr: partition
files copied into /wbfs/gamename_[id]/id.wbfs

Hello.:)

Makes me wonder... what the hell is the difference between this old cios I got and newer ones that are recommended in guides.

hermes can not used in/with IOS 56 (used as Base IOS by d2x cIOSes),which has the Speed of Base 57 and Compatibility of Base 37
and is the main used for USB Loading Games.

v4 can only use 38 on Slot 222/223
v5 must use 38 only for the 222 slot but allows different (37/38/57) for the Slots 223/224

If I remember correct,it has also Issues with SD Card Content Loading with USBLoaders.
Maybe also Issues with Party Games like Guitar and Singing Games.
37 + (38) are good but slow on Loading.

USBLoaders supports NO emuNAND Save with hermes cIOS !

You can use it,of course, nothing speaks against it.

Thank you.:)

Thanks, so basically use it until i run into trouble, then try something else, well to be honest i only plan to use it to load usb games, for emunand stuff i expected to use one of the newer one :D

For a while I thought there's less features like resolution mode hacks, or wimmfi patching or smth.

Anyway will prolly try older d2x to see if this is an issue that got introduced in one of the newer versions, if so there's source to compare, assuming it's not a major change, couldn't find hermes source to take a quick look at how they handle usb ;/.

edit: welp i can confirm what doesn't work with this specific pendrive (Sandisc Cruzer Ultra 128GB)

Code:
d2x-v10-beta53-alt
d2x-v10-beta52
d2x-v8
d2x-v7
d2x-v6

out of which beta 53 seemed to crash usbloader gx and wii flow lite, i guess that's why nobody recommends it ;D

not sure if theres any point continuing testing.
the changes from what i've seen are already quite large

Hey guys im gunna piggy back on this problem as well lol. Im another idiot with black screening issues. I am using 128 GB san disk Flash ( yes i know this could be the issue) with usb loader GX. None of the games load they all just black screen ( Wii games and Gamecube) but oddly enough i used an SD card with a 3.0 reader and the games worked on there. So not sure if i have done something wrong i was noted maybe use V8 final vs. beta 52? Dumps seem good too all games show up but just wont load...
Anyways here is my system info and Log, any help appreciated would be cool.
