Hardware Old 3ds slow and keeps crashing

Hello.

I have been having an issue with my brother's old 3ds.
When I turn it on, it takes a few seconds to boot up into the main menu. Then, it functions normally until I open an app.
When I open an app, the system crashes completely and I have to hold the power button to force shut it down.
When I close the 3ds, it also crashes.
It also seems to crash on the main menu by itself.
When I put in the SD card, the theme loads but none of the apps display.

This is unmodified firmware.
This happened after I replaced a broken speaker ribbon cable.

Without any game cart and SD card inserted, does the o3DS crashes trying to connecting online such as visiting the Nintendo eShop?

Try updating the system software if its not the latest version.
