It’s usually preformed either by a Live DVD or Live USB for minimal chance of a failed installation introduced by unknown outside veritables.

So technically while it is possible, it’s definitely not advisable

Do you have any experience with linux at all ?

Not necessary. There are good Linux lists for beginners nor new users. Very easy to use. Yeah. Here is the list:

9 Best Linux Distributions For Beginners or New Users
  • Linux Mint.
  • Ubuntu.
  • Zorin OS.
  • Deepin Linux.
  • Manjaro Linux.
  • Linux Lite.

I assume that is supposed to be ubuntu.

You do seem to get yourself into some odd situations but it is not like I was never broke and curious.

Anyway easiest way would be if your computer boots from SD card then format it/set it up as per a USB install (dozens of tools here but for the sake of linking one then https://unetbootin.github.io/ ) and boot from that. Might also work to put the SD card in a USB reader and boot from that as at that point the USB reader makes it a USB drive. Personally I still burn DVDs but most of my machines still have such things and I can always stick a DVD on a hard drive caddy so there is that.

There are ways to do so called jump loaders/chain loaders if your computer will not boot from some kind of onboard reader (USB was around for many years before it became common to boot from it) but I will skip that one as computers could still be expected to have floppy drives back when that was relevant.

If your computer supports booting from SD, then you should just be able to flash Ubuntu onto an SD card. Personally, I suggest booting off USB if you can. Regardless, I always suggest using etcher

I would suggest using a virtual machine like virtual box first as a relatively safe way to experiment with Linux.
