That sounds very much like you're running with insufficient memory, which is likely to happen if you run in applet (album) mode. If you are 100% sure that you're running in regular app mode or from NSP hbmenu, post logs from the /switch/gzdoom folder.
You mean holding R over an app and not the album? I am absolutely doing that. The log just says failed to allocate memory. I wonder if this is an issue with rei.nx or something.

For most Homebrew, you need to have a Switch Game Card inserted, or have a Game/Demo Installed. Then, when the Home Screen, Highlight the Game/Card/Demo, Hold R and Open it. If it comes up with the Select User Profile, keep holding R and Select the User Profile needed. Keep holding R until you reach the Homebrew Menu/Loader, then it is no longer needed.

If you want to be sure, you can try NSP hbmenu if you don't mind installing it.

I got something to change by not holding r at all until the profile selector comes up. If I hold r at all before the profile selector, I just go straight into the menu. Freedoom 1 works now, but doom 2 still crashes on starting a new game. Its less unstable now.

Works on my machine. What settings are you modifying and what controller are you selecting in the menu when doing so? It should show 8 "switch controllers", you should select the top one.
Also, make sure to exit the game via the Exit button in the menu, that ensures that the settings get saved.

When i launch doom original it just sits at black screen no matter what mode i m in any ideas?
Do other wads launch faster for you? I'm told that If you aren't overclocking, it may take a while to boot. Even when launched from an app like your supposed to, it still seems to take a minute in my experience. Just wait for it, and if it doesn't launch within, say, 2 minutes, there may be something wrong.

Hey @fgsfds, just as a heads up, Switch update 9.0 updates the HID stuff on the Switch, so the upcoming releases of Atmosphere will require all homebrew to use a new libnx version which will be needed for all subsequent homebrew to work properly, since without it, any <9.0 compiled homebrew won't recognize button inputs. Updating all of your repos with the new libnx and re-compiling them with it should do it (GzDoom, the Quakes, Doom 3, etc).
Here's m4xw's tweet for more info:
