if you use an internal modchip, can you boot up into original firmware if you just don't use a jig?

Short answer yes. Long answer, it depends on your install and setup. My modchip auto boots me to ofw, but when I activate RCM mode with a specific button combo i auto boot to SX os. Best of both worlds and no autorcm needed.

Any of the m0 boards or a Rebug.

All do the same thing

The nicest solution is a bare QFP ATSAMD21 fitted to the underside of the board. Though not for the beginner

Where does the chip fit inside the switch? I want to mod mine, but I don't want to trim the heat plate.

I'm stuck between the SwitchMe chip and the other trinket M0 chip. If this method is "cleaner" then I'd persue it.

The chip on one of mine is fitted underneath the board. Above the multiplexer / matrix switch.

Not for the feint of heart though.

Switchme, trinket, whichever. All do same thing. You may find the Switchme easier to fit due to bigger pads for the usb lines
I forgot where I read this, but someone mentioned that this board prevents battery drain? Only takes power on boot?

They are all the same. All run the same code.

Just depends how you fit it weather it prevents battery drain or not

Ah okay, that clears it up a bit. So was the trinket originally just a prebult thing that was adapted for this exploit?

No. The trinket is a microcontroller used for lots of different purposes...

Projects, education... The usefulness comes from the samd chip as it has USB host mode, enabling it to act as a host (ie like your pc)

I'm about to buy a modchip for my Switch, but I don't know what the best out there is right now. Is it Team Xecuter's SX Pro? Or AceNS? Or R4? OR something else? Ace and R4 are much cheaper, but are they as good? The main things I want to do with it are play xci and nsp files, as well as run emulators, particularly with RetroArch. I don't mind paying more for SX Pro if it does more and is worth it, but if R4 does the same things for cheaper, then why waste money.
The NS-Atmosphere is supposedly the best buy. Low price and more reliable than AceNS/RCMloader (they're the same thing)

I ended up buying the SX Pro. But I have a couple questions. Is it best to format my SD card as exFAT? I read that for games larger than 3.7GB, you have to have exFAT format, but you need to boot up your Switch like normal and go online and update your system, so it will retrieve the proper files for your exFAT card. My Switch is version 5.something, and I'd rather not update. Is it completely safe to update? Is there some other way to get my Switch to recognize exFAT?

have SXOS pro but i'm waiting for dragon injector
SXOS + dragon injector is the best if you do not want to risk installing an internal mod chip IMHO

People say homebrew has issues with exFAT, so maybe it's best to use FAT32. XCIs and NSPs can be split up, and the games when installed will always be split so there should be no issue.

Erm... Might have some somewhere... An old video I made...

This is very nice!
But a bad flash during an update would probably ruin your day :D

Speaking of modchips, I think I saw a post somewhere, that said it's not possible to coldboot a modded switch with the dock, because the USB interface is occupied during boottime.
Is that still true? Because (for the love of god) I can't find that information again anywhere.

Speak for your self on this one. I love that I can see the LED from the back and it definitely makes the switch look more interesting.
Bare ATSAMD is definitely a clean solution (but then again, someone with good wiring skills can make the installed trinket look incredible and clean at the same time).
