Hi guys, i just got a new 2DSXL. I intend to put custom firmware on it, most guides ive seen are old, some many many years old so i have a few questions:

1. Is emunand still a thing and is this what i should be installing?
2. Assuming no to question 1 then what should i be installing.
3. do i need 2 consoles or not? some guides say yes some say no.
4. When i get to the installing cia file stage of things what is the best/newest converter to use, i hear this is better than using a emulator at running the roms?
5. Can i still go online without being banned?

Other possibly useful things to know:
I already bought a flashcart loaded with ntrboot
Im very good a soldering small things so a hardware mod doesnt scare me.

EmuNAND / RedNAND was used in the past when permanent SysNAND modifications were not safe. Today only advanced users would have a use for it. In general, if you have to ask about EmuNAND, you don't need it.

If you choose the ntrboot method, you may need a second system (DS, DSi, or 3DS) if you can't flash an ntrboot-compatible card on the console you want to use it with. Otherwise this is not required in most situations.

Converter for what? If you want to turn your game cards into digital titles, GodMode9 can build CIAs from them on the console. (Note the process for DS games is very different) - https://3ds.hacks.guide/godmode9-usage#dumping-a-game-cartridge
5. Can i still go online without being banned?
Don't cheat in online games and you'll probably be fine. (And don't play leaked games online, but with fewer releases every year this is becoming less of a point).

3. no
4. if you have a .3ds file you can use godmode9 to convert it to cia. to install a cia use FBI
5. yes. just make sure to turn off spotpass everywhere and turn off if you want your friends to see what you are playing and clear your activity log!

Thanks, a buddy mentioned godmode9 is hella slow, is there a tool to do this on PC which i would imagine is alot faster.

it may or may not be slow depending in the speed of your sd card (if it is class 4, class 6 or class 10). class 10 is the fastest. The guy that told you that had a really old sd card. It is slow if you are like me and have a class 4 sd card but it isnt that slow you just need to wait 5-10 minuted. it takes more time on pc because you need to dump files and programs etc. follow the guide i made:
