YouTuber Dammit Jeff offers large bounty for definitive PS5 modification in partnership with the FULU Foundation, currently sat at over $30,000

A YouTuber with over half a million subscribers, Dammit Jeff, (in partnership with Louis Rossmann's FULU Foundation)has offered a substantial bounty for the release of a significant PS5 exploit. In a video posted to his channel yesterday, he detailed his plan to revolutionise the hacking scene for the console in response to Sony's much maligned decision to go fully digital in 2028. He also gave instructions on how to keep the console on the lowest possible firmware by disabling updates, along with a scathing rebuttal to Sony's talking points regarding the shift.

"This feels like it's only a net benefit for Sony. That's it. The only thing we get out of this is, 'Oh, well... It's a little more convenient.' ... I keep seeing the same statistic everywhere- Yes. 85% of PlayStation game sales were digital last year, that is correct. But- And this is important- Adoption does not equate preference. ... How many people do you think chose the disc version of the PS5 over the digital version of the PS5? 82%. ... Clearly consumers still want at least the choice to decide where and how they buy their games."

Both Dammit Jeff and the FULU Foundation put up $10,000 each, and small dollar donations are coming in steadily. The bounty is totalled at $32,572 at the time of writing, while the largest payout Sony has ever made for the disclosure of an exploit was $20,000 to TheFloW's exploit from 4 years ago. There are significant conditions attached to receive the bounty, however.

The disclosed exploit must:
  • Demonstrably allow for the modification or bypassing of the PS5 hypervisor to the extent that an alternate OS can be booted (Stability of the alternate OS is not required)
  • Either be a one-off implementation, or an implementation that takes no more than 10 minutes to execute if it needs to be repeated
  • Work on firmware version 13.42 or newer (The most recent firmware at the time of writing)
  • Be able to access the PS5's primary computation, memory, and graphics hardware on the alternate OS
  • Allow the PS5 to continue to be capable of being booted into its original operating system, with the capability to play PS5 games
On top of that, if the modification is a hardware modification, it must also not require hardware that costs a meaningful percentage of the PS5's cost, and be able to be carried out by someone with only basic soldering skills and equipment.

It was reported at the beginning of the month that Sony anticipated the negative backlash toward the decision to cease producing physical games, and while a huge backlash continues to flood their social media pages, the company has remained steadfast in its decision-making. Weaponising crowd funding is just the latest in a long line of schemes to strike back at the company, but this has gotten significantly more traction than any of the previous ones. I don't know how these two people are connected, but reading the news article I found it weird that someone other than Louis gets credited for the bounty. There might be a good reason for that. The initial fund of $10.000 and the matching fund of $10.000 leave enough room for possible explanations, but why speculate if you could just as well get it explained to you by someone who already knows the definitive answer?

Would be cool if OP had done the proper research beforehand.

I confess, I hadn't seen Rossmann's short, I avoid YouTube Shorts and disable them in my YouTube Revanced. I'm currently following Rossmann's fight(?) with WeRecoverData, so it's not from lack of liking or respect for Louis whatsoever, he's a hero.

I got halfway into writing an update, but I've decided not to for a couple of reasons: First of all, this new video has put the bounty well above what Sony has ever offered, which I think changes the tenor of the whole thing, and second, the FULU Foundation is already well-credited. I'll edit the post and attribute the FULU Foundation to Rossmann, but I don't think a larger change is needed.

I wish we had a FULU foundation equivalent here in the EU.

We also need a Louis here. I follow him since almost the beginning and he's an inspiration, a true fighter for freedom of repair our own stuff. He started with fighting Apple's anti consumer practices and ended up as a champion for the Right to Repair movement.
We need more people like him.

they can't dmca without their copyrights being infringed
the ps5 exploits are untouched on github
exploiting the playstation 5 itself is not illegal, it's just against sony's terms of service, so offering a bounty for that to take place is not something you can take legal recourse against
whatever sony tries to do to impede you, you own the product, the physical computer, and can do whatever you like as far as modification goes aside from making it a bomb or something

All three of those statements can also be said for going all digital. Didn't think about that before you replied, did ya?

For example I have a now old method of doing multi color printing. “Mosaic pallate 2s” it’s a machine that cuts and splices filament inline.

$4-600 depending on your configuration and still sold

Has not had updates in 6 years, features promises never delivered, and the company still sells and produces them. When they themselves have even said the product is not supported since they pivoted to industrial machines

What do you expect, when 3D printers can be built out of nothing more than cheap aluminium extrusion, a few stepper motors and basic electronic parts? Controller boards, stepper motor drivers and so on are available off the shelf. You don't even need a factory, any startup with a small amount of money can just start making them.
Thankfully we've started to move past that to 3D printers being something more tailor made and they're a lot more reliable as a result. But they also started to become more locked down as a result, thankfully not every manufacturer is doing that.

100% agree. Straight message to digital not your data club. Im little scared games soon become "not present on games player with Arm procesor that streams off service provider paid subscription for better specs and resolution servers"
