Block Wii U System Updates (Without DNS Blocking!)

This method has been circulating around since yesterday. Presumably, it was discovered on a Chinese forum.

Using this method allows you to stay connected without DNS blocking, and therefore have complete access to Nintendo services.

There are some concerns floating around about this process. So here is a complete guide detailing the process.

Disclaimer:
The following guide tampers with your NAND. Use this with caution or there is a good chance you'll MESS UP your Wii U for good, or even BRICK!

Requirements:

  • A Wii U & SD: Firmware and SD size doesn't matter as long as you satisfy the other conditions
  • Mocha Or Haxchi
  • HBL on SD card
  • ftpiiu_everywhere (Haxchi) on SD card
  • Access to HBL: Browserhax, Haxchi/CBHC, or any other form of entry point, are all fine. As long as you access it.
  • A PC with FTP Client: Technically it doesn't have to be a PC. It can even be done on your phone with an FTP Client. I'm using the PC for the simplicity of it. FileZilla IS RECOMMENDED.
  • Optional: Use Nand Dumper to back up your nand with all it's contents, as well as dumping the OTP and SEEPRPOM. By having those, you can unbrick your system with a hardmod at any point. Dumping MLC will require a 64GB SD card if your Wii U is 32GB, or 16GB SD card if your Wii U is 8GB.

1A) Using Haxchi/CBHC:
  1. System Menu: Have Haxchi reboot to System menu.
  2. System Menu: Launch HBL via Haxchi or browser.
  3. HBL: Launch ftpiiu_everywhere.
  4. Proceed to section "2)" of the guide to block updates. Proceed to section "3)" if you want to unblock them again.
1B) Using Mocha:
  1. System Menu: Launch HBL via browser.
  2. HBL: Start Mocha (Using default values are fine)
  3. System Menu: Launch HBL via browser again.
  4. HBL: Launch ftpiiu_everywhere.
  5. Proceed to section "2)" of the guide to block updates. Proceed to section "3)" if you want to unblock them again.
2) Modifying your Nand, and blocking updates:
  1. PC: Use an FTP client to connect to your Wii U using the IP address and port on your Wii U screen.
  2. PC: Once connected, Navigate to: "storage_mlc/sys/"
  3. PC: Locate "update" folder, right-click it and Pick "File Permissions". Make sure it's the same as the screenshot below. If it's not the same, then make note of that. You will need it if you want to enable updates later. If it's the Same, then proceed to the next Step.
    384072-FTPiiU.PNG
  4. PC: Delete “update” folder.
  5. Wii U: Press "Home" button to get back to HBL, press it again to get back to Mii Maker.
  6. Wii U: Exit Mii Maker, and click on system settings.
  7. System Settings: Attempt to update your Wii U as Normal. A few seconds after it starts and the progress bar appears, it should give out this error code: 105-3012. If the progress bar actually continues to move, TURN OFF THE WII U IMMEDIATELY!! Recheck your steps, cause something went wrong.
3) Unblocking updates:

If for whatever reason, you would like to return the Wii U to it's original updating state, start by following "1A)" or "1B)" of the guide, then proceed to the next step of this section:
  1. PC: Use an FTP client to connect to your Wii U using the IP address and port on your Wii U screen.
  2. PC: Once connected, Navigate to: "storage_mlc/sys/"
  3. PC: Right-click, and select "Create Directory". Create “update” folder. Once created, right-click again, and select "File Permissions".
  4. PC: When you originally did section "2)", if your permissions were the same as the screenshot in that section, enter those same permissions here. If not, then you should have noted them down somewhere. Enter those values instead, then click ok.
  5. Wii U: Press "Home" button to get back to HBL, press it again to get back to Mii Maker.
  6. Wii U: Exit Mii Maker, and click on system settings.
  7. System Settings: Attempt to update your Wii U as Normal. It should proceed to update normally.

Where in the instructions did I mention sig patcher?

I suggest rereading the guide..
I thought it was the way to enter in Sysmenu thats why I said it didnt work for me. Anyway I tried without sig patcher and it still doesnt work
EDIT: Ok after some research I realized I have no Haxchi icon on my menu but I remember installing it in Brain Training. It even allows me to reinstall it even If I can´t find the game. Also no, I didnt install coldboot, the haxchi and the NDS Game both disappeared without reason

You are goin all around the instructions. The instructions clearly asks you use either haxchi or mocha. Mocha is a free option. Once that’s done, you have to use the ftpion for the method you have followed (there is more than 1 version)

You aren’t willing to follow simple instructions and decide to continue “winging it”, I strongly suggest you stay away from this whole procedure. You are doing something to your system nand and the procedure is not to be taken lightly. The way you are approaching this, I see a brick coming your way.

I am sorry to be so blunt, but come on dude..

Its ok I was dumb enought to dont understand the H icon on Wii its both Haxchi and Homebrew Channel. Has been a while away from the scene but now I learnt to restart into cfw and could continue the guide. It worked too, so thanks for the guide and for trying to help me.

TL;DR for everyone as dumb as me: Go the h icon on the menu and wait for the bubble, hold the button that the bubble says is to enter cfw mode while Homebrew Launcher is booting (In my case I had to hold A while booting Homebrew Launcher) If it returns to the menu you can continue with the guide.

Hi I followed the method for blocking updates by deleting the update file in storage_mic/sys/ from page 1s guide. When trying to update it said my software is up to date (5.5.3) . It didn't come up with the error message "105-3012". Am I still alright to go online and update the games I have ? Minecraft updated ok and Cpt Toad. Am I been a bit over cauious ?

I asked the same thing when I did it. It's fine, it doesn't stop it from being able to check for updates, it stops it being able to download and install an update if there is one.

Thanks and i can still play online too. For example smash bros and mario kart ? FYI If people are having trouble still theres a few very useful vids on youtube to help. I had trouble with one of the files on "ftpiiu everywhere" which i had to replace.

The info you have been getting is correct. This procedure doesn’t hinder any interne services, so it checks it just fine. You are on the latest firmware so it didn’t find anything to error out on.

What this actually does is that, when an update is available, it tries to download it, which requires a directory for it to be in (in this case, update directory), but it can’t find it, so it errors out.

Hello, thanks for tutotial, but thE picture with values is gone. What values I must put in file permissions?
Ah, dammit. That’s because it was hosted on filetrip, which is now gone.. I’d ont have the picture anymore.

Are you trying to restore the folder? Cause if not, you don’t need to input anything. That’s only in the case of restoration.

If you are trying to delete it, just make a note of what the permissions were before deleting it (and maybe post a screenshot here since we don’t have it anymore).

Also, I am fairly certain that the file permission part is not even needed. It was just some extra precaution from my side

  1. PC: Right-click, and select "Create Directory". Once created, right-click again, and select "File Permissions".
I guess the name of that directory must be "update", right?

Those displayed permissions are bogus, ftpiiu can't read or set them.

I just did this blocking method (deleting the "update" folder) and that part went OK. I then went to check the change had "taken" by running the system update from the Wii U menu, and I just got "Your console is up-to-date" - I am on 5.5.4E system software - I didn't get the error code 105-3012 as detailed in the instructions. Is this OK?

You only get that when there is an update.

Think about it logically. You deleted the folder where the update downloads to. If your system is up to date, why would you get any sort of error when there is nothing to download?

I can't speak of people who already on the latest update, but I'm on 5.5.1. I get the failed to download message after deleting the folder, and using a dns to block updates. that sort of thing is normal. that's how it is just using the dns.

off topic: I've been testing my wiimotes after I discovered my princess peach, pink wiimote's gyroscope no longer seems to work. I'm now checking all of my wiimotes, so far everything works, but I have to charge their batteries for a bit. I have every character wiimote, skyward sword, tron, a blue one, and a white one with motion plus adapter. :D
