I’ve combed through the entire thread but would like a straight answer if possible. From what I’ve read through the entire thread it seems some say do it this way some say do it that way.

Can I just take the next core from the nightly and use it on the official Retroarch release by putting it in the cores folder or do I also need the nro?

If it requires the nro to accompany it am I correct in assuming that I may as well just run the entire nightly and archive the official release for now?

Thanks for any information anyone is able to provide. I understand I can just run the entire nightly but just want to know if I can just mix the next core into the official release and if it requires the nightly nro.

As I understand it you need the RA nro in the switch folder and the mupen64 core, both from the same nightly. I recall people having problems and m4xw telling them they need both.

Thanks for the reply. I’ll probably just remove the official release from my SD card and run nightlies until this becomes official. I realize it may be a long ways off but I don’t mind having to update to newer nightlies in case something breaks in another core. My primary is n64, PSX, snes and nes.

@m4xw Thanks for your hard work and dedication to the homebrew scene and for stepping up to work on this when it had seemed hope was lost. Your efforts for the homebrew community are greatly appreciated. This project has taken off much faster than I ever anticipated it would or could. I can’t wait watch this grow until it becomes completed.

Ok I have done some testing.. first test:

Smash bros story mode link: 1st battle
-tried dyna recompile, cached and pure. seemed to have almost NO speed difference whatsoever. My fps stayed the same around 22-27 on stock clocks.
Then I upped clocks to 1500 mhz. Game now seemed to run almost full speed 50-60 fps. but occasional dips when certain effects happen. Playableish I would say. Then next level load with mass yoshi's... This runs way worse even with 1500 mhz.. 35 fps and dips that feel like 15 fps.. but n average itstill is mostly 40 fps+

So full speed nope...
Tried Mario kart. seemed around 40 fps too. sometimes bits that went full speed. and dipsthat felt like 10 or 20 fps.

Now a few questions:
- I dont understand why everyone so enthuisiastic about dynarec.. i tested it and the performance difference is rly hard to spot?
- anyone tried 1700 mhz overclock for some time?
- anything else i can do to boost stabillity and performance

Is DK64 kinda stuttery for everyone, or is it just me? The stutters never seem to calm down with gameplay as it caches like Mario 64 or BK. Is that just the way it is with current builds?

Are you sure you are using the correct core (mupen64 next) and the latest nightly?

Both those games are perfectly playable for me even at stock speeds in handheld mode.

And make sure Framebuffer Emulation is set to False.. For some games it's necessary, but for most it causes a lot of slowdowns.

With perfectly playable you mean constant 55-60 fps? at stock speed?
Could you please post the exact link of what you are using right now?

Absolutely blown away!! 'Space Station Silicon Valley' finally works!!!

Yes i posted this a few pages back i was also blown away

To the dude not impressed you are not using the latest files as seen here majority of games are now full speed

I am using some files of a week ago. Still quite recent.
Can you link me the EXACT files everyone is using. Perhaps I did something wrong.
I know some links are posted in thread but since I have differing results as some of you do, i ask again for the exact files.

Mostly everyone in here is using some revision of the nightlies. Grab the latest here:

Not really what I was asking. Since builds can differ greatly. And they not update it literally each day, like i don't.
So im asking for users respective specifc files and configs of the users that claim that super smash bros/ mario bros is "perfectly playble" without overclock.

Nonetheless I decided to update to that latest file. Didnt seem to matter much. However when turning Framebuffer Emulation to false this helped alot especially in menu's.
Now the game runs at 30-40 fps without overclock. with 1500 mhz its 55-60 fps constant. but it still has mini stutters occasionaly, when doing some special moves in super smash bros for example or just randomly.
Anyone experience the same?

So a few other things I noticed are:

1. Whenever you pull up retroarch menu. the game visuals become borked when you return to the game. the game is active, but you see the "old screen" that was on when you decided to go to retro menu.
Basically this means a reboot of the game is needed.

2. Whenever I try to load the game sometimes it doesn't load and defaults me back to the retroarch. I keep trying and trying sometimes doing it 4 times over before it finally starts.. Anyone know why? With a beta emulator that crashes often. needing to restart 4 or 5 times till the game works again is a real pain in the ass.

3. The mini stutters in super smash bros.

4. Can you make the screen stretched on the switch? I tried change to 16:19 or crop mode off, but it didnt seem to matter.

5. Sometimes retro arch crashes and when you try to rerun the app via homebrew app, Nintendo Switch will back error screen you forcing you to reboot entire device. This has caused my sd card in the past to be corrupt and i saw mupen.ini file was corrupted because of it. (perhaps among others)

6. There is now 2 Mupen? Mupen plus? One does not have notification options to show fps i found out.

Are you using m4xw's config?

Use mupen next

The stutters are just the game learning, it's the best it's gonna be at the moment

Load the core first if it keeps booting you back to retroarch

Is your sd card exfat?

Use the full overclock, it's safe

You asked for the exact files that everyone is using. No one is going to be able to give you that since everyone is using different nightly builds and configs.

How are you launching RetroArch? Through the NSP? Through the Album Applet > Homebrew Menu? Through title replacement? You have to use title replacement for best compatiblity and performance.

The mini stutter that you mention is the dynamic recompiler in action.

To display in 16:9 you have to change 'Settings > Video > Aspect Ratio', as well as 'Quick Menu > Options > Aspect Ratio'.

Is your SD card formatted as Exfat? It sounds like it is. Switch to FAT32.

Mupen64Plus-Next is the recommended core. Make sure you have 'Settings > Video > Threaded Video = Off', 'Quick Menu > Options > CPU Core = dynamic_recompiler', and 'Quick Menu > Options > Framebuffer Emulation = False'. Adjust these and other settings as you see fit to try and improve performance.

If you are looking for stutter free than you need a new Hekete kernel patch which is only available in private build. Otherwise everything are the same.
