Since people are starting too dive into the game's files and start sharing their new models/texture edits I figured now would be a great time to main thread so that everyone can share/help in one place!

Please note that I did not make the quick BMS script for extracting these files. Random Bush did. If you would like to see his release thread you may do so here

Requirements
  1. Extract your game
  2. Open QuickBMS and select the Switch BNTX Script within the "Scripts Folder"
  3. Once the script is opened, you should see a new file explorer. use this to select the BNTX file you would like to extract/mod. If you would like to extract a full folder simply navigate to the folder and enter an * in the file name section and click option. Like so

  4. once you click open one more file explorer should appear. This is asking you where you would like to save your files. You may save these anywhere but I recommend using the output folder that I included with QuickBMS to stay organized. Once you select your folder, click save and QuickBMS will quickly do its job and you should see a bunch of DDS files within the folder you just selected!
  5. To edit/view these new DDS files you will need to open and use TexFactory. This program is fairly straightforward so add any/all of the DDS files that you would like to edit/view to this program and click convert. You do not need to change any of the conversion options.
  6. Once converted your new PNG files should be right next to their original DDS files. You can now view/edit these PNGs to your hearts content!

There is an add folder button but that doesn't seem to work for me. You can however drag and drop files into it, which speeds things up a lot

And how to re-make the gfpak to add to the game? That's the part I'm stuck on.
I could be wrong but I don't think anyone has done that with gfpaks yet. I've only messed with these bntx files

ElChicoEevee on gamebanana has somehow managed to do it.

I tried DMing him about how to repack the edited bntx files and all he said was “use reimport.bat” and didn’t elaborate where to get that from. I haven’t tried pestering him more because I don’t want to be annoying, lol.

I was able to get most of the stuff working, and have the replaced bnt files. whenever I try to use reimport.bat, it wants a specific file instead of the whole folder that is generated when you extract the gfpak file

Edit: Nevermind, I was just being stupid and using the program wrong. Here's a screenshot. I can't figure out which file stores the regular textures though, I found shadow textures (3a) and shiny textures (3b) but can't find the regular textures.
Edit 2: Also found the regular textures (38). Those are probably specific to charmander, but other pokemon should have files in similar locations. I haven't tested yet. It's pretty odd that the regular texure file is so far from the texture files for the eyes and shiny body textures
Edit 3: Here's the .gfpak, I only made charmander for now. It was supposed to be more of a blue and not purple, but the point was just to be a color that was obviously not normal. put it in /[Insert CFW]/romfs/bin/archive/pokemon

Unfortunately I haven't been able to figure out how to use any of these, except to just unpack everything.
I did stumble across a gfpak un-packer though from here http://aluigi.org/bms/pokemon_gflxpack.bms
But putting it back together with the same script and reimport.bat doesn't seem to work...

The archive contents of THIS Pikachu skin mod imply that the gfpak was edited, but it's still a mystery to me how they got it working.

when you use the reimport.bat, select the file you extracted and then the folder that you extracted it to. It does the exact same thing except in reverse

When you use the bms script to extract contents from a gfpak, it gives you about 250 some files... if you select them all when reimport.bat asks you to pick a file/archive, it just says this

This is before editing of any kind, by the way. I just wanted to see if I could put it back together before I spend a lot of effort combing through the contents.

EDIT: The BNTX script with reimport.bat is doing the same thing with dds files I try to convert back to bntx.... It says 0 files found in 0 seconds and doesn't actually do anything.

Sorry for the double post, but I got a reply from someone that was posting Pokemon edits on Gamebanana, and also taught me HOW to use reimport.bat, which was very kind of them. Here's their reply in full:

  • Hello! I use this script http://aluigi.altervista.org/bms/pokemon_gflxpack.bms after that rename bnt to bntx, edit with bntx injector, rename back to bnt, then run reimport.bat from QuickBMS, choose script, choose target file(.gfpak), choose folder where the .bnt and .dat files are(they need to be alone in a folder with no other things because the script will get all that is in the folder and inject/putback to the target file) so select any file within the folder and it will begin the process

I'm also having issues with the BNTX injector as well importing the .dds back into the bntx file. I used Tex Factory to convert to a png, and then recoloured a bit, and then converted it back to .dds, but the BNTX Injector keeps giving me this error when I click "Replace", regardless if i choose Linear tiling mode or not.

EDIT: the original size of the dds file is 342 kb and the tex factory re-converted one is 1025 kb :/

EDIT2: I have instead opted to edit the .dds file itself with this plugin for photoshop, and it converted to bntx just fine with the injector :)

I used NVidia's plugin for photoshop and that worked as well. Funnily enough I have an AMD video card
