[EDIT] Resolved thank you ;-;
Hi guys! I don't even know where this goes, I apologize.

I have one 3ds with homebrew and one New 3dsXL on the latest OFW, without homebrew. My old 3ds is on v11.2 OFW with homebrew via soundhax. I have two physical animal crossing games, and I updated one to Welcome Amiibo on my N3ds. I wanted to be able to play between the two games, but when I try to insert the welcome amiibo into my old 3ds, it reads "This software must be updated".

I can't access the eshop, I don't have CFW... is there a way to bypass this message or to get the update without updating my firmware or losing homebrew?

Heads up, I have trouble with jargon since I have no idea what I'm doing and once ended up softbricking my 3ds by installing something dumb lol I'm super noob. I've installed homebrew twice on my 3ds and once on a wii but I don't know anything beyond v11.2.
Please help!

Your o3DS on 11.2 firmware is custom firmware hackable with Homebrew Launcher (Soundhax).
Your n3DSXL on 11.8 firmware is also hackable with Frogminer.
If you have a compatible DS flashcart, you can instead hack with NTRboot, aka "magnethax" (see the first link that list various methods in 3ds.hacks.guide).

If you acquire Luma3DS v9.1 with boot9strap v1.3, you can update to the latest 3DS firmware without fear of losing said CFW.

Once that's settle, you can either update the game through Nintendo eShop or acquire installable updates as *.cia files. These would have to be found elsewhere with the aid of Google search; don't ask here about where to download them.

Thank you so much for your response! Okay so I have about 20 noob questions:
> Is there a chance to be banned using CFW?
> Is there a foolproof guide for CFW? I've softbricked my 3ds once since I had no idea what I was doing and I'm afraid that softbricking again will lead to a total loss of homebrew. Is there a foolproof guide on how to do it without softbricking? I have soundhax all set for a while which is why I haven't updated.
> If I do get Luma3ds, how do I update? Just through the regular method? I know nothing about CFW or how it works ;;
I'm trying to avoid .cia so if I'm able to access the eshop it'd be fantastic.

[Edit]
I also have stickerhax installed via sounhax I forgot to mention

1. Is there a chance to be banned using CFW?
CFW always carries the risk of a ban if you:
  • don't follow the 3ds.hacks.guide advice found below at Get Started
  • cheat in games in online play having impossible stats or items
  • play games that haven't been official released
You can be banned without having CFW by being an asshole towards others online.

2. Is there a foolproof guide for CFW?
3ds.hacks.guide is about the closest thing to foolproof when it comes to hacking resources. You just find a method you're most comfortable with.

Two most popular options:
  • Frogminer is free but requires Nintendo eShop, friending someone, and involves several slightly ardeous steps.
  • NTRboot is probably the easiest to pull if you can afford to wait buying a $6-20 DS flashcart.
3. I've softbricked my 3ds once since I had no idea what I was doing and I'm afraid that softbricking again will lead to a total loss of homebrew.
Shit happens even to people who follow safety precautions. To mitigate data loss, you can:
  • Check your SD card for hardware faults using H2testw. Ensure it's not fake or failing.
  • Make a SysNAND recovery image with GodMode9 in case you ever softbrick your 3DS.
  • Backup your games, DLCs, and updates with GodMode9 as *.cia for archiving purpose.
  • Periodically backup your game saves and extdata with a save manager like Checkpoint or JKSM.
4. Is there a foolproof guide on how to do it without softbricking? I have soundhax all set for a while which is why I haven't updated.
I think this question is a repeat of question 2.

5. If I do get Luma3ds, how do I update? Just through the regular method? I know nothing about CFW or how it works ;;
With a 3DS hacked with custom firmware, you update your 3DS firmware like you normally would through System Settings.

In the case of updating your homebrew apps:
  • Manually by replacing *.3dsx files found in a 3ds folder if they're Homebrew Launcher based apps.
  • Manually by installing *.cia files with an app called FBI; these are HOME Menu titles.
  • There are wireless methods of updating app with assistant apps/programs like Boop and QRaken.
There are two parts for the core essentials to 3DS CFW. Luma3DS, boot9strap, and GodMode9 are updated manually replacing their files on the SD card and running certain scripts/chainloaders to update the onboard CTRNAND drive.
  • These three have update cycles like that of the 3DS firmware: infrequent or matured development

6. I'm trying to avoid .cia so if I'm able to access the eshop it'd be fantastic.
The only precaution when visiting the Nintendo eShop is that your pirated DLCs will get deleted if you've ever visiting the DLC pages for those games.

Questions 7. through 20.

Thank you so much for responding! I actually was able to get Luma3ds thanks to you but I'm unable to launch homebrew? I'm using the downloadplay as suggested but it's giving me a black screen?

[EDIT] Nevermind! I forgot to upload my payload and now I'm crying because it worked Thank you so much ;-;
