what was confirmed to possibly cause a burned port?

using a self-powered hard drive will protect against this? Or using a Y cable?
yeah it will. Or using a flash drive like an SSD is also fine. Using a regular 2.5 inch or 3.5 inch hard drive non powered or with a single cable can cause that.
 
Just so I’m perfectly clear cause I’m a noob -

I have a 2TB Seagate harddrive that requires me to use a power cable to plug it into the wall to power it. That means I’m at a reduced to almost zero Switch port power damage problem right?

And is the port damage talking about the USB port of the dock or the console? Cause I’m only gonna use it docked. And the damage, does it happen to the harddrive or the switch?

Does can be a substitue for a y cable to use on 2.5 hdd non powered?
