title is a clickbait, this emulator run extreme bad on old3ds
Check the date this thread was made. While you don't know the context behind this, the OP was referring to the release of mGBA v0.6.0. That version received a huge boost in speed performance compared to the older v0.5.2.

Yes, you're correct that mGBA is still slow-ish when compared to real hardware GBA VC as of today, but it's getting really close. The newest 0.7 b1 inches ever so slightly towards consistent ~59 FPS under heavy rendering load.

Nope not clickbait as it is known O3DS is crap for mGBA
Did you two ever made peace from the scuffle about the CHMM / Anemone3DS theme shuffle?

that's what I've been hoping to hear. the version I've been using (0.6.2)was a nice improvement for games like doom 2 and duke nukem advance they're still slow(20-25fps) but much more playable from previous versions.btw I'm using a N3ds xl.

I've been using a really old version of this to play Pokemon Emerald. My current version runs just fine except for some really crappy audio from time to time, it comes and goes. How do I update to the newest version? Do I just install the new version via FBI, and it automatically updates the existing one instead of installing in a new slot? Also, will it remember my settings and existing save files? (I've been using PC tools to copy my Pokemon from game to game since Pokemon Red, but limiting myself in each game to only using Pokemon that are appropriate in level for where I'm at.)

Go to mgba.io and go to the Downloads page.
From there go to Development (or nightly) downloads and get the one for 3DS, grab the CIA from it.
Install that one with whatever CIA installer you have.

FBI's title database doesn't hold the latest nightlies for mGBA iirc.

Why don't you upgrade to 0.7 beta 1? 0.6.3 is months old.

didn't know it was "old" and I seen a statement that a new stable release was coming soon it's also a pain to take my sd card out to update things. I only updated because I had the card out to update something else.

mGBA is my way of playing pokemon pirsm... the cries of the post gen 2 mons don't sound quite as good now, but I'm looking forward to other improvements

also glad its still being worked on. also, playing 3DSx file verison, when I go to home menu with 3D on, it actually works now! before the left parallax barrier would glitch out.

just going thru it with the GBA roms I have now...exciting stuff... some games run WAY better now

I love NSUI and GBA VC injection... but its limiting to what you can do. If this surpasses it then wow.. all I can say

Everything runs poorly on the old3DS. The old3DS is significantly weaker than the new3DS and thus emulation (and a lot of games in general) suffer from this weaker hardware.

I just updated my 3DS, and then had to update Luma3DS to get it to work again. Once I got it working, I installed the new version of mGBA and updated it. (I mainly wanted to see if the audio worked better now) However, there's now no sound when the emulator is running. Every other part of my 3DS has sound, but not mGBA. I checked "Configure" in case there was an option that needed adjusted, but I didn't see anything that had to do with audio.

Any ideas how to fix this?

mGBA cannot find gba roms on 3ds. Should i have to add the to a specific folder to recognise them?
Are your *.gba roms packed in *.zip, *.7z, or *.rar archives? Are you using the latest nightly build found here?

A way to tell where your mGBA is looking for roms is to open the config.ini found in mGBA folder with Programmer's Notepad.

Under the [ports.3ds] section, you should see:

Code:
lastDirectory=/<where ever mGBA last looked in>

In the mGBA emulator, you navigate within the SD card using:
  • (B) button - to back out a directory.
    • You can also select (Up) found at the top.
  • (A) button - to enter a directory or load a highlighted rom.
  • Exit game - Press (X) to access mGBA menu and select this to unload a rom.
