Someone just stolen
@MatinatorX images and it's trying to resell it.
thanks you , I was going to buy it , but no , was too good to be true
@MatinatorX May be a good idea to put that link in your first post with a message saying it's fake.
Well, that's an interesting thing to wake up to.
@Timgamer, could you please provide me the link to the webpage where you took that screenshot? I'd like to see the page and potentially contact the seller.
Re-sellers have been something far, far at the back of my mind because I didn't think the interest would be high enough to worry about it. If I'm wrong about that, I should plan what to do about them. Since the project is open source (or it will be when it's actually done!) there's not too much I can do to prevent clones from popping up if the demand is there, and I'm set on keeping it open source. However, there are some things I can do to discourage abuse of the project.
First, if the project is successful, I'll trademark the name and logo. This would give people the ability to build their own but not resell them under the DragonInjector name or logo without my explicit permission. This would be in addition to the requirement of linking back to my original source files as required by the CC-SA 4.0 license this project will be open-sourced under, so many buyers would be made aware the product they were looking at was a clone. Obviously some re-sellers won't care what's legal and what isn't, but it's something at least.
Second, I should state that I'm not against re-sellers as long as they make me aware they plan to re-sell the product (even if it would be fairly obvious by order quantities from purchases). I have no problem sharing an official list of re-sellers if the demand is there. There are some advantages to having re-sellers, but the important one for me would be the amount of time I'd save not having to mail single units out in great numbers or deal with international mailing, which gives me more time to actually make the product and less headaches from my post office.
While I still think it's way too early for anyone to want to become a re-seller (I still don't have a 100% working prototype in my hands!), in the event that you
do want to become one, I urge you to contact me so we can do so in a mutually-beneficial fashion. I can provide discounts for bulk orders and potentially also some savings on shipping costs, as well give you access to higher quality and unique renders and photographs for your store.
One last thing I could do (which as a maker I really don't like the idea of, but it is an option) is to wait a month or so after launch to provide the source files publicly. Instead, I would restrict them to requests from established GBATemp members. Again, I really don't like this idea, but I also don't like the idea of the project suffering due to bad quality clones or users who need some help with the product and aren't aware they can get it here or on the Discord server I'll be creating.
A lot of the above would require me to talk to a business lawyer about certifications and stuff, but again if the demand is there I've no problem doing so.
As always, I'd appreciate any feedback you all have on the matter.
