I'm having a lot of trouble getting RetroArch to play anything on my WiiU.

I have RetroArch 1.7.3 installed on my WiiU. It has the proper XBMC asset files, and it loads just fine from the Homebrew Launcher. When I switch cores, it does it, but it also dumps me back to the HBL. Not a huge issue, but kind of annoying. The real issue, though, is when I go to select a game to play through the selected core, it just dumps me back to the HBL menu as well. I can't seem to figure out how to get the core to actually play the file.

Can anyone help me with this?

Try unzipping your ROMs. Or click "Browse Archive" and select the ROM inside manually instead of loading the archive itself.

The ROMs I'm using are already unzipped, and I've made sure they work with the cores i'm using. For instance, my SNES ROMs are .smc format, and I'm using the SNES9x 2010 core in RetroArch.

Welp, I got it working. I deleted my version of RetroArch I was using and installed the latest nightly build instead and it works perfectly, no issues. Not sure exactly what changed between versions, but apparently it's what my WiiU needed.

I'm running rpx 2018-08-16, all the cores are running fine, but the menu icons appear as just mumbled garbage (like an ascii picture) on my wii U (running 5.5.1) - any ideas how I could fix this? Thanks!

Is this your first play on RA Wii U or have you updated? I suspect you have the assets and had an older build - best thing to do is delete what you've currently got, then download the latest. Happened to me too, overwriting didn't help but delete/redownload via computer worked for me... I am on an older build at the moment though so don't sue me if it doesn't work!!

First play for me, installed the assets (linked from a tutorial), and updated to latest RA through the app on the wii U.
Will try this.

Did the old delete and reinstall, took some fiddling to get the launcher to work again but all works perfectly now, cheers.

Seriously, thanks to all that have worked on RetroArch for WiiU - this is awesome!

RetroArch seems to load very slow, probably because a lot of small files on SD. Is it possible to "lighten" it up? Should I remove unnecessary code or some files from media folder?

I'm having trouble loading into the .rpx version of RetroArch through the Homebrew Launcher. The .elf version loads just fine, but it is annoying to have to reboot the application every time I want to load a new core. Any fix suggestions?

EDIT: nvm, I just had to delete the old config files. However, I'd like to use the Unofficial RetroArch Launcher app. I installed the channel through WUP Installer GX2 and it boots me back to the Wii U menu. I read CBHC users in a separate thread may have to reset their system memory in order for it to work. Is that right?

EDIT 2: I figured it out. Just delete the config file and everything should work.

Does the channel forwarder require Mocha? I've tested it with and without and it seems to be so, but I haven't found anything to confirm this.
The channel forwarder does not require Mocha. I'm able to run it just fine with CBHC installed. However, I've run into a completely separate issue where whenever I run the RetroArch Forwarder, none of my Homebrew Channel apps work and I cannot exit back into the System Menu after playing a game (such as a Virtual Console title) without restarting my Wii U. Any help at all would be appreciated! ^_^

Has anybody yet tested cores in the latest build release?
I'd like to know if its worth making the upgrade if things are nice and stable.

Skimming through the 1.7.4 update blog these are the main standouts:

GENERAL:
- 64-bit Android version
- Updated GUI on Windows
- Sync To Exact Content Frame Rate
- Cheat code searching

WII U:
– Fix out-of-bounds rendering bug
– Implement UDP broadcast network logging on Wii U.
– Audio should no longer clip.

I didn't notice any clipping in the last version but I usually play with the volume down anyway.

I think that's just something you've gotta deal with - it's not 100%, sometimes other apps etc will work after playing RA - for the sake of about half a minute of your time it's probably best to just reset your machine after a retroarch sesh - it's not a deal breaker, and I don't know of any fix for it..

Hi, can somebody give me a little hand here.. sorry if I am completely dumb, but I cant't get it working:

I want to use my DS4 controller (second, current version) with retroArch to play some old Gameboy games with my WiiU. So I understand that I need to download the controller ini files from Maschell, and put them in the SD:\wiiu\controller\ folder to get HID support, and then choose the controller in the retroArch input configuration and map the buttons. The problem is, the controller doesn't appear there, so I cant't choose it (only WiiU gamepad and connected WiiMote/NunChuk shows up..) I got my DS4 controller plugged into one of the front USB slots of my WiiU. It works fine there with Nintendont, for example, so the hardware works very well. Any advice?

Thanks!!
