Hardware My Switch Overheats Like SHIT

Maybe your fan died? Never had an issue with overheating.

Looks like you have a PROBLEM, I think cleaning the vents out is the only thing you can do.

After about 45 mins to a hour
Vents are very clean
Fan cuts on when it wants but not when its needed, game is already hot by then

Perhaps your idea of overheating is everyone else’s idea of normal?

So you have soft, sensitive skin susceptible to warm surfaces?

If the system is “normal warm” and functions normally don’t worry about it?

Then your fan is probably going bad. Send it to nintendo ;/ Atleast your fan isnt running at 200% constantly.... I had that issue and had to send mine in...

Well, it depends what you may consider hot.
Mine also gets hot, to the point where it can be a bit annoying but it doesn't hurt.
It gets nowhere as hot as my PC GPU, in which case just touching the heatsink for a couple of seconds may result in a blister.

You would have to open the console to see if the vents are clean. Keep in mind that's the exhaust, so dust enters through the air vents in the back and come out the top, therefore dust would accumulate on the bottom of the heatsink where the air comes in.

If the console still functions normally, it's not overheating.
But the console does indeed get hot in docked mode. In handheld mode I haven't noticed much heat from it. You can get a fan that slots into your dock and looks completely stock, it's sold on eBay.

If the fan is working intermittently the it's probably a lose connector or damaged sensor. Have you tried taking the heat pipe off and seeing if there is a good amount of conductive grease on there? There are several layers of material transferring heat in there. Sound like you might need a repair.

Sometimes your switch does get hot in handheld mode if the game is graphically intensive enough (i.e Breath of the wild, splatoon and fortnite)

Not hard at all. There's several YT vids that explain how to do it. A couple things to keep in mind tho. You only have to unscrew the middle screw on the joy-con rails, and remember to be careful with the screws because they're super easy to strip

Yes i have it in the "leather" folding case that can sit up like a stand

I haven't encountered this until i started playing nsp files on cfw, even when i used to play zelda like hell it never cut off on my from overheating. The shit got hot but not to this extreme
