The "nim" module changes to firmware 11.8.0 look like they are intended to make it so that the Nintendo CDN won't let you download game content unless you have a purchase ticket. In other words, that you've bought the game.

It's still very, very early in the 11.8.0 reverse engineering process, but the look of things is that they're going to stop a certain pirate shop application from working.

I do not use said program, so it doesn't matter much to me.

Freeshop is a perfectly fine application, it's totally legit and doesn't include anything with copyright infringement in it. HOW YOU use it, is not up to GBAtemp.
No one actually says its name, though. All the 11.8 threads literally call it "that one pirate shop" or similar. I'm curious why...

11.8 did nothing except change the firmware in such a way that Luma's patcher could not find what it needs to patch anymore and failed. No code was obfuscated, rewritten, or otherwise hardened in any way against CFWs. Once an update was released, it managed to find the address again and everything is fine.

11.8.0-41 doesn't break the free shop from downloading games from nintendo's servers. just tested it.
Yet (if ever), same with friends driver version updates, and iOS shsh signing - you can usually play online multiplayer with an outdated OS and CFW pair for a couple hours/days

There is an application which we won't name that installs every ticket onto the eShop. It's basically as if you bought every game in existence. I don't think the 11.8.0 update would break eShop for those with tickets. I don't condone piracy just saying it exists and Nintendo patching that process is futile at this point..

It's that devil ticket app, isn't it?

Hmm, I wonder if this supposedly patched NIM system module only affects newer release games, or there's some sort of grace period before it fully kicks in. Either cases would be a major bummer.

What if they are patching it, so the same patching processes can be applied to the Switch, so some software app for the Switch doesn't go fetch all the eShop titles?
I wonder how, if at all, this will affect the app that downloads all tickets and installs for you. It seems like this mainly targets CIAngle which abuses the CDN itself. So it's understandable. Though I think Nintendo may be upping their game to kill piracy on the 3DS before DEF-CON this year to align with the Nintendo Switch.

Yes and I'm sure over the next few months more anti-piracy protections are coming up. It's been a long time since the last free primary exploit so Nintendo is taking precautions to reduce piracy this time around. It's a bummer but it's understandable. Nintendo HAS TO do something to stop piracy if they're going to keep releasing Nintendo 3DS titles, why would they bother releasing games for the 3DS when most people will just pirate them rather than pay for it. If you send me a private message I'll send you a screenshot of the app I'm talking about but I'm not going to promote it here. I have a feeling this is just the beginning Nintendo could very well start adding in more anti-piracy measures to make it closer to that of the Nintendo Switch.

So we might not be able to download new stuff but are we at risk of having already downloaded pirated content not working?

I find that doubtful, Nintendo would have to make significant changes to the platform to attempt such a feat. Not to mention it could negatively affect people who have a large amount of legitimately obtained content getting up with the new api measures. I think this will attempt to stop or at least slow down further piracy for future title releases.

Doubtful they can stop it, worse case you could download a cia file on your computer and then install it with fbi.

They'd have to find some way of tagging legitimate legitimate downloads then adding new checks to prevent the old downloads from launching. Luma3DS patches out signature checks so I don't see that being an issue. And if you're like me and don't care about online play you can always just remove Wi-Fi configurations and turn wireless off except during local play. No system updates required.
